Title: Labor has lost control of our borders
Post by Armchair_Politician on May 12th, 2012 at 1:29pm
A sixth people smuggling boat has been intercepted this week by the Navy carrying 84 people. At this rate, Gillard will be kicking ordinary Aussies out of their own homes to accomodate these country-shopping illegal immigrants! Both Gillard and Bowen must hang their heads in shame over their complete failure to secure our borders. One must wonder when will Labor wake up and realise that:

(a) The Labor Party created this mess
(b) There is no one to blame for this mess other than themselves
(c) The only option available to them is to resurrect the Pacific Solution in order to smash the business model of people smugglers

By what measure can the Pacific Solution ever be considered a failure? It stopped the boats - period. Just six illegal immigrants in detention when Rudd won office. Since then, more than 17,000 on more than 300 boats have arrived.

There were 4 boat people in detention when labor dismantled the policy that stopped the boats.

The detention centre statistics prove it worked yet the ignorant leftists ignore these facts as there were less than 500 people in detention from January 06 to January 09 compared to the 6000+ we have today.

http://www.immi.gov.au/managing-australias-borders/detention/_pdf/immigration-detention-statistics-20120331.pdf

Labor created this billion dollar a year debacle and they cannot fix it because the Greens want an open border policy which is exactly what we have.

The Government has not only lost control of the borders, this is a country under hostile Invasion and occupation.  The native born people of this nation are betrayed by its Government and big business. 8-)

Ask the Greens why they are so active fighting for Euthanasia and birth control in the Northern Territory, involved in mining industry and supportive of the racist intervention against the Aboriginal people.  This matters to all Australians and speaks to the security of all native born people of Australia. 8-)

Perhaps you could direct you enquiry to last election's NT Greens Senate.

Warren H Williams launches his NT Greens Senate campaign
15 Jul 2010 | General
Respected Central Australian Aboriginal musician Warren H. Williams will today officially launch his campaign as the Greens Senate candidate for the Northern Territory.

Warren H was born at the remote community of Hermannsburg, west of Alice Springs, and is a proud Arrente man who wants to make a difference to his community.

Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam will help launch the campaign at an event at CAAMA studios, where Warren presents a popular national music program.

"Warren is a great candidate offering Territorians a real alternative," said Senator Ludlam.

"I know from my own experience in the fight against Commonwealth plans to impose a radioactive waste dump on locals, the level of disenchantment with the major parties.

"Labor and the Coalition have continually ripped off the Territory and taken it for granted for far too long.

"Now locals have a real choice and I encourage people to come along and hear Warren's vision for the Territory," Senator Ludlam said.

The 17,000 boat people are costing us a billion dollars per year.

83.5% of them are still on welfare up to 5 years after arriving,we cant do longer term studies because therte were only 4 boat people in detention when labor created this billion dollar per year debacle.

These migrants if they are not citizens they pay a higher tax rate compared to Australians.

Typical of the leftards to say big whoop over a billion dollar per year debacle they created.

Interesting numbers. Iran, China, Burma, are all governments that we recognise as oppressive, being from these countries carries an understanding of refugee. Sri Lanka are just recovering from a very long and vicious civil war, Afghanistan are at war as for all intensive purposes is Pakistan. As for the rest it is a good question but the numbers are very small and the report does not identify by which method each demographic arrived. Many of the Indo and Malay men were probably crew on boats.

Not sure of the exact number of over stayers but it is up around the 16 000 mark annually. Some of these are also in detention. You also miss that the numbers are small and though with the current state of affairs where Abbott has betrayed the country and his core beliefs to make a political point may be making the trip a bit more attractive this is not the main cause and the usual ignorance and fear is the driver of such opinion. OH and the bitterness of the loops on the right.

" The number of unauthorised boat arrivals to Australia follows global trends.? In 2001 and 2002, for example, Australia experienced a peak in the number of boat arrivals (more than 5,500 in 2001 and almost 3000 in 2002) as did most of the rest of the world.? Then from 2003, global asylum numbers dropped as the level of global conflict dropped.? But over the last two years, global asylum seeker numbers have increased again.? When comparing 2008 figures with 2007, for example, asylum seeker numbers rose by 122% in Italy, 121% in Norway, 89% in the Netherlands, 70% in Turkey, 53% in Switzerland, 30% in Canada and 20% in France, according to a 2009 UNHCR report.? Yet in the same period, Australia saw only a 19% increase"

There were 4 boat people in detention when labor dismantled the policy that stopped the boats.

The detention centre statistics prove it worked yet the ignorant leftists ignore these facts as there were less than 500 people in detention from January 06 to January 09 compared to the 6000+ we have today.

Labor created this billion dollar a year debacle and they cannot fix it because the Greens want an open border policy which is exactly what we have.

Push Factors create Boat Refugees

Push Factors Like The Coalition's Illegal Invasion and the Defeated USA Foreign Policy In Afghanistan.

About time hard righters took responsibility for the consequences of their actions.

Push factors is bullshit pull factor from the leftists ,click on the detention statistics

Iran- who are they at war with?
Indonesia- who are they at war with, we give them foreign aid
Pakistan - who are they at war with
Sri Lanka- who are they at war with
China- who are they at war with
Vietnam- who are they at war with
Burma- who are they at war with
Malaysia - who are they at war with
What are the push factors for these people you pullcock?

About time the leftists took responsibility for their billion dollar a year debacle.

Now the people from two countries you left of your list

Iraq
Afghanistan

The coalition caused these push factors and so must take responsibility for the consequences of their action.

Hang on I never caused those push factors, nor did the Aboriginals.  You Greens caused those push factors with your meddling and interventionism - dont take my country off me for something you did. 8-)

Labor really is quite unbelievable on this issue...

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said this was a consequence of the coalition's refusal to act in the national interest and work with the government to implement offshore processing.

"Late last year, the government approached the opposition in good faith to sit down and discuss what we could do to prevent people from risking their lives at sea," Mr Bowen said.

Labor certainly did not negotiate in "good faith". Gillard did agree offshore processing was required, however the caveat was that the policy would be Malaysia or nothing. That is not a negotiation - it's an ultimatum and a poor one at that because it's the job of Gillard and Bowen to put forward competent policies, not Abbott. The deal with Malaysia was subsequently ruled illegal and even before that ruling by the full bench of the High Court, Abbott refused to support it - with good reason.

Actually, they aren't part of our immigration program. The people that ARE part of our humanitarian/immigration program have applied through the proper channels and more often than not they will lose their spot to a queue-jumping illegal immigrant who arrives onboard a people smuggling boat. Why do REAL asylum seekers miss out? Because this country has a quota that sets how many people we will take in during a given year. Your arguments, as laid out in your post, show a breathtaking lack of understanding of this issue - the kind of Michael Moore, 6th-grade logic that got us into this mess in the first place!

*sigh* It'd be nice if people posting charts here could actually understand what it is they are posting up.

See your chart there rorty? See how in 1992 mandatory detention started? What happened between 1992 and 2001? We went from SFA to over 5,500 per year. Are you saying mandatory detention attracted refugees? You better explain to us how that works in your alternate reality.

When you finish explaining that one then please explain this one:

You will notice how asylum seeker numbers 2000-2010 dropped right across the OECD at around the same time that they dropped in Australia. YOU claim that Australia's drop in numbers was due to the Pacific Solution. Explain to me how the Pacific Solution reduced asylum seeker numbers across the OECD.

If you can't then the Pacific Solution wasn't the cause of Australia's drop in numbers any more than for the OECD. So the Pacific Solution did nothing except move a LOT of money from Australia to Nauru for no good reason.

Last year the majority of Australians wanted boat people processed onshore. The relentless propaganda against boat people, including the deliberate ploy of labeling them illegals, might have changed our perceptions somewhat, but we as a whole are a nobler people than you suggest.

Quote:
A MAJORITY of voters believe asylum seekers should be processed onshore, defying the policies of the government and the opposition which are fighting over which offshore destination to send boat arrivals.

The latest Herald/Nielsen poll finds 54 per cent of voters believe asylum seekers arriving by boat should be allowed to land in Australia to be assessed.

Just 25 per cent say they should be sent to another country to be assessed while 16 per cent believe the boats should be ''sent back'' and 4 per cent don't know.

Incorrect.

Boat people, arriving unannounced, form part of Australia's immigration program.

All perfectly legal, and certainly not an invasion.

Furthermore, the 1951 UN Convention and the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights ensures that they are welcome.

I agree - it's about an orderly process allowing the authorities to decide who is granted asylum and who is not. It's not about having hundreds of people come by the boat load, burn detention centres, assault staff and generaly have a hissy-fit that makes my 2 year old son's tantrums look lame all because they are either refused asylum or their application is taking too long to be determined as far as they are concerned.

"The 13,770 refugee and humanitarian visas issued in 2009-10 were divided between 9,236 offshore refugee and humanitarian visas (the lowest number in eight years) and 4,534 onshore visas (the second highest on record). These included 2,156 onshore visas granted to asylum seekers who entered Australia by boat. "

"Humanitarian Program

"The Humanitarian Program has two important functions:

"the onshore protection/asylum component fulfils Australia's international obligations by offering protection to people already in Australia who are found to be refugees according to the Refugees Convention

"the offshore resettlement component expresses Australia's commitment to refugee protection by going beyond these obligations and offering resettlement to people overseas for whom this is the most appropriate option."

They are not queue jumpers.  People don't join a queue in order to become an asylum seeker.

And, they are not illegal immigrants.  Not sure why you don't understand these facts.

Partially correct - THOSE people don't. It's the poor souls who apply through the proper channels who are in queue and usually miss out to those who come by boat. You have a serious inability to sort fact from fiction. But that's what one would expect from a Leftard, so I guess we can't hold it against you and will continue to right your wrongs for you.

Your inability to understand this simple fact is quite astonishing.

That is not correct. The number of off shore refugees we accept is determined independently of the onshore program. It's a simple point that is probably hard for you to accept because you are so frequently told they are queue jumpers. Well, they are not.

Yeah, nah - so not right. Australia's intake is capped. Each country-hopping queue-jumper who gets a place in our refugee program takes one place away from someone who took the time to make an application to the UNHCR or an Australian embassy.

Motr, good for you knowing them. But for every one you have met there is one more waiting in a camp overseas and their place has been taken by the ones that you met.

The CASHED UP ONES that is.

Baron, do you understand how our immigration system works. This comes directly from the Immigration Department.

“The Humanitarian Program comprises an offshore component for the resettlement of people overseas, and an onshore component for those people already in Australia who seek Australia’s protection.”

So there are actually two separate components to the humanitarian program within our immigration system. People arriving by boat have no impact on the “queue”.

Further, according to our Immigration Department, "the size and composition of the resettlement program are influenced by a number of factors, including an estimate of the number of people likely to be found in need of protection in Australia in accordance with international obligations under the Refugees Convention “

In practice this means the number of offshore refugees we accept into Australia each year is independent of the number of onshore asylum seekers. Keeping in mind most of these onshore asylum seekers arrived by plane, not by boat.

Baron, it is a gross misrepresentation of the truth to suggest that boat people are pushing offshore refugees further down the "queue". It is a misrepresentation aimed squarely at vilifying boat people to put them offside with mainstream Australians who typically possess an acute sense of the fair go. It is disappointing that this untruth continues to be cultivated by prominent members of the coalition and their mouthpieces in the media.

Interesting but it doesn't make any mention of the points I am supposed to have lost over. Hardly surprising.

BUT it does mention this:

Quote:
The Humanitarian Program has two important functions:

the onshore protection/asylum component fulfils Australia's international obligations by offering protection to people already in Australia who are found to be refugees according to the Refugees Convention

the offshore resettlement component expresses Australia's commitment to refugee protection by going beyond these obligations and offering resettlement to people overseas for whom this is the most appropriate option.

My emphasis.

In other words, Australia only has obligations to asylum seekers who reach our shores. We are OBLIGED to take them. For anyone overseas seeking asylum, we grant it out of our own good nature. We have NO OBLIGATION to take anyone from overseas.

I hadn't realised this important point. That puts quite a different spin on it doesn't it? Quite different to what you righties and your shock jocks present.

Yep, quite comfortable. We're obliged under our international agreements to take people who arrive on our shores (whether by plane or boat). We're under NO obligation to take people overseas. Read it, it's in that same fact sheet. I even quoted it for you above.

If you want the overseas numbers to remain constant then you'd best show more support for asylum seekers.

If you understand numbers you would see that when the ILLEGAL numbers are up the humanitarian numbers go down keeping the TOTAL numbers close..

2006/2007 ILLEGALS 1,793. Refugee 6,003.
Special Humanitarian (offshore) 5,183. Total 13,017

2007/2008 ILLEGALS 2,131. Refugee 6,004. Special Humanitarian (offshore) 4,794. Total 13,014.

2008/2009. ILLEGALS 2,492. Refugee 6,499 which includes 500 one of places for Iraqis. Special Humanitarian (offshore) 4,511. Total 13,507.

Do you see a pattern emerging here? ILLEGALS go up, genuine refugees and special humanitarian come down.

Think you missed the humanitarian refugees. They are the ones with reducing numbers to allow for the ILLEGALS.

While you are checking that also check the totals. You do know what totals is? That's the BIG number you get when add the smaller ones together.

You can try and explain that to Gist as I can't be bothered.

So your argument is that those who receive special humanitarian visas are refugees. Is that correct? I can clearly see your point, but it is incorrect to say that refugees processed onshore are taking a place of genuine refugees when those who apply for special humanitarian visas would have applied for refugee status if they had qualified.

Quote:
Special Humanitarian Program (SHP)—for people outside their home country who are subject to substantial discrimination amounting to gross violation of human rights in their home country, and immediate family of persons who have been granted protection in Australia. Applications for entry under the SHP must be supported by a proposer who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, or an organisation that is based in Australia.

This is what the discussion is about.

If we have 6,000 illegal boat people in a year that is 6,000 less GENUINE refugees we take.

That is not correct. The number of off shore refugees we accept is determined independently of the onshore program. It's a simple point that is probably hard for you to accept because you are so frequently told they are queue jumpers. Well, they are not.

This is why Abbott's spot on with his 'turn back the boats' wheeze: these boats are not under the flags of the asylum seekers' countries but under Indonesian flags.

In other words, we may be obliged to take people fleeing their own countries but we are certainly not obliged to take country shoppers 'fleeing' Indonesia.

But you gits and ches and nairbies and dickoes and prickoes are all too stupid to comprehend anything as basic as this. Carry on regardless.i

Ahhh... Sorrel... the herb of choice when it comes to rabbit feed.

Wrong sunshine. Under Sorell logic, anyone that doesn't arrive on a boat or plane from their home country is unacceptable. But of course, that's rabbit-food-think.

In fact (if you'd paid attention to the discussion thus far) you'd have seen that we are obliged to accept refugees who arrive here are, regardless of how they arrive.

Do focus on this thought. Go over it repeatedly through the night. Eventually it may sink in and you'll be that little bit better educated.

Exactly. Has the number of offshore refugees we accept decreased with the increase in the number of onshore applicants. The answer is no. What is clear, however, is that the Labor government has capped our total humanitarian program, which in effect means that asylum seekers who arrive by boat, or plane, are having an affect on the number of immigrants we accept offshore for humanitarian reasons. This is not the fault of the asylum seekers who arrive by boat, but rather the failure of our government to deliver on it's promise to increase the humanitarian program to 20,000.

Im surprised he repeated the lie with his budget reply speech.

It is confusing, in that they are not considered to be refugees as defined by the United Nations, yet I'd say many are victims of serious human rights abuse in their home country. So while they are not "genuine refugees", it brings us great shame we have deliberately reduced  this number.

Yep, I'd agree with that completely. But you and I aren't the ones chanting "stop the boats".

Fair dinkum you 2 dont have half a brain between the pair of you.

Did you read this bit or even comprehend it you dopey assclowns?
The offshore resettlement component expresses Australia's commitment to refugee protection.......

So what is the Labor-Greens policy on border security?
They failed with malaysia they are devoid of any policy apart from blame Tony for Kevin dismantling a policy that stopped the boats.

Perhaps you should read the posts leading to this one. I agree, the intake from the special humanitarian program is numerically linked to the number of successful onshore asylum seekers. While these are not considered refugees by the UN, the distinction is perhaps more semantic than real. I believe it is shameful act to reduce this quota when the number of onshore applicants goes up. We have an international obligation to accept legitimate refugees that arrive on our shores, it is in some ways a breach of faith to cut back on our offshore program in the process of fulfilling this obligation. While an increase in boat people has no bearing on the number of UN classified refugees we accept, it does impact on a very vulnerable group of people, that are also suffering gross human rights violations.

Your ignorance is astonishing, what proper channels? It is legal to seek asylum by boat in Australia!!! People arriving by boat are simply following the process outlined in the UN Refugee Convention and Australian Migration Act, which recognises that it is lawful to enter a country for the purpose of seekign asylum, regardless of how they arrive or whether they hold travil of identity documents. Most do not have these documents because it is to dangerous to apply for them in their own country. Besides, people who travel by boat to Australia make up a very small percentage, less than %2, of Australia's annual migration intake.

Labor's control of our borders is a sick joke. They are at best impotent at this task, as evidenced by a people smuggling kingpin fleeing 24 hours after a TV program aired about his criminal activity. Indonesia isn't the problem - Australia is. Our impotent government has been pushing and pulling these country shoppers through Indonesia and our northern neighbours are essentially powerless to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. You know it's wrong when illegal immigrants get public housing ahead of Australian citizens who've been on a waiting list for 10+ years but have to live in tents and caravans or in hostels. Labor's only solution is to continue pushing for the illegal Malaysia deal to be introduced and, as everyone knows, that is not the solution to this mess. It is a mess entirely of Labor's making and the only one's with the power to fix it is the ALP. The blame lays solely with the ALP for this farce. Gillard and Bowen have turned us into a laughing-stock in SE Asia. Bowen should resign and Gillard should go to the GG to request an early election because neither of them is anywhere near close to being up to the job. Absolutely and utterly disgraceful!

Actually they did in a way. One of them told me the story of how they headed for Malaysia (I think from memory). They got there after a couple of days at sea only to find a Malaysian gunship with guns aimed at them. Needless to say, they didn't land there.

WRONG - if anything, I'm a big dog!

The liberal party who are not in government created this mess when they refused to pass legislation that is supportive of their own policy position. FACT END OF STORY.
WRONG! Labor was given the perfect legislation (i.e. Pacific Solution) to deal with this issue, but dismantled it. Subsequently, we went from zero boats and zero people to what is now more than 300 boats and well in excess of 12,000 people since Kevin Rudd made that monumental blunder. Gillard has had NUMEROUS opportunities to fix this mess that is entirely of LABOR's making, but refuses to do so and instead prefers to make those dead people her political pawns. Disgraceful!

The pacific solution is no more available than the Malaysia solution as the high court have thrown that out idiot. Stop bang off with rubbish.
WRONG yet again! The ruling by the High Court affected only Malaysia. At no time was any reference made to either Nauru or offshore processing in its entirety being illegal.

You really should stop posting such clear and obvious lies. It just makes you look like the uneducated fool that you are.
