VICTORIAN Senator Helen Kroger's position as chief opposition whip in the Senate is under threat with the Senator set to face a a spill in the party room today.

Reports this morning claim Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Eric Abetz visited Senator Kroger this morning to tell her she no longer had the confidence of the party room.

The National Times understands Senator Kroger, the ex-wife of Liberal party powerbroker Michael Kroger, has been contacting her colleagues this morning to muster support for her to continue as whip.

There is anger among some Liberals who do not understand why there are forces trying to destablise the party when the government was in so much disarray.

One source said ''it would be a test of Abbott's leadership''.

Last month Senator Kroger was demoted to the third position on the Liberals' senate ticket in Victoria, a position tough to win. It was seen as the beginning of the end of the once powerful Kroger faction of the Liberal party.

A Coalition source confirmed West Australian Chris Back was likely to be Senator Kroger's replacement as whip.

Senator Back, parliament's only veterinarian, grabbed headlines last year when he accused animal activist group Animals Australias of paying Indonesian slaughtermen to be cruel to cattle while being filmed. Animals Australia strenuously rejected the claims.

The activist group was responsible for uncovering gross cruelty to Australian cattle in Indonesian abattoirs last year, which lead to a month-long suspension of the trade.

The National Times understands a delegation of Liberal Senators approached Senator Abetz before the Victorian preselection process to raise concerns over Senator Kroger's performance as whip, but a decision was made to not act until after the preselection vote.

Sources deny that the move is factionally motivated.
