National trucking firm 1st Fleet has gone into administration, with about 1000 jobs under threat.   :(

Sydney-based administrators deVries Tayeh was appointed to oversee the day-to-day running of the firm on Wednesday - citing cash flow difficulties at the NSW-based company.

"Generally, it's run out of cash," joint administrator Riad Tayeh told AAP.


"As you can see it's a tough time in the economy, so we're just trying to get a handle on the cash flow at the moment and trade it on and see what we can do with it.

"We hope within the next two weeks we'll be able to work out a direction."

He said the company operates about 1000 trucks nationwide.   :-?

Administrators may look to find a buyer for 1st Fleet and Mr Tayeh said it would attempt to minimise job losses.

"We want to make sure that the best possible outcome is done," he said.

A senior manager at 1st Fleet declined to elaborate on the reasons for the company being placed in administration.

The private firm, which has headquarters in Smithfield, in Sydney's southwest, was founded in NSW in 1988 and grew to become a sizeable logistics operation.

It also provides warehousing, fleet management, labour hire and recruitment and wharf container transport services.

Apparently Mr Baillieu, that's right Mr Baillieu the Liberal Premier of Victoria has promised $1.2billion to create 2500 jobs.

When Labor do it, it's an abomination, when the Libs do it, it's who knows, something good anyway.

I don't believe that. MPs from the Liberal party are anti worker and couldn't give a damn about other people if they aren't members of the Liberal party.

Retailers killing trucking industry - union

MAJOR retailers such as Coles are to blame for national trucking firm 1st Fleet going into administration, the transport union says.

Up to 1000 jobs are at risk after Sydney-based administrators deVries Tayeh were appointed to oversee the day-to-day running of 1st Fleet on Wednesday - citing cash flow difficulties at the NSW-based company.   :(

Transport Workers Union National Secretary Tony Sheldon says the difficulties faced by 1st Fleet are a warning sign of the dangers posed by "the unfettered economic might of major retailers such as Coles".

"Major retailers are putting the big squeeze on their supply chain, wringing it dry and pocketing the profits," Mr Sheldon said in Sydney today.   :(

"This affects everyone from truckies to farmers, small businesses and small communities.

Mr Sheldon said workers at 1st Fleet took illegal industrial action yesterday, which was subsequently supported by the union.

"These workers made the decision to say if they weren't getting paid, and owner-drivers hadn't been paid after two months, enough was enough," Mr Sheldon said.   :(

He accused the company of mismanagement, saying the union had been forced several times over the past two years to take action to make sure the company paid superannuation to its employees.

But he said the country's major retailers were to blame for the millions of dollars owed to the firm's workers.   

"The blame primarily lies with the retailers because they have been squeezing the life out of transport supply chains, manufacturers, farmers in this country at a cost - and the cost is decent Australian jobs." 

"I have some sympathy for this transport operator. They've been around for a very long time.

"They employ a lot of jobs and they are reasonably paid jobs.

"But this company has been squeezed at the behest of the retailers and their margins, and they have made cuts they shouldn't have made."   :(
