Title: I want 1. crystal cpu 1 with 80 zero x faster than Post by progressiveslol on Apr 26th, 2012 at 7:23pm
tests suggest the new device's potential can be matched only by a conventional computer as big as the known universe

Can you use Facebook on it? :P
The key search term should be "Quantum computer". People have been talking about Quantum computers for years, and some have been built. It's an emerging technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_computing Quote:

Title: Re: I want 1. crystal cpu 1 with 80 zero x faster than Post by mozzaok on Apr 27th, 2012 at 8:02am the classic tech head response is. I want one. How much are they? Where can you buy them? These happened to be the exact words spoken by a colleague who was pranked by his mates many years ago. They were in court, and during a break, the prankster set his phone alarm off, then proceeded to pull a roll of typed info from the side of his watch, pretending it was a miniature FAX watch, just invented, which he had bought overseas. I guess that anything is believable if you want to believe. The ramifications of such startling computer power are a wee bit intimidating though. How could we mere mortals compete with such? Sci Fi dystopian potentials abound. |

Don't hold your breath. I don't believe there will ever be a quantum computer that does any useful processing. |

We could make it Prime Minister then. 8-) Maybe it will consider itself too intelligent. Echoes of HAL ? Actually quantum computers are being commerically produced for limited applications. They're made by D Wave. That's old news: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/29/d-wave-sells-first-commercial-quantum-computer-to-lockheed-marti/ Quote:

Hi Muso,
I still think it's a hoax. There were no examples of a real problem solved. e.g. Such a computer would easily be able to break 128 bit or even military 1024 bit encryption. Have they done it? If they have it would destroy the entire world's security & we would know about it as banner headlines. |

Forbes is a pretty reliable source: Quote:
If it's a hoax, then the University of Southern California are in on it too (and I think that's highly unlikely): http://dornsife.usc.edu/news/stories/1079/a-quantum-leap-in-computing/ Quote:
Of course the Quantum computers of the future will make this one look like a pocket calculator. It's early days yet. |

Muso,
Quote:
Not of course - it's yet to be seen if real advantage can be gained to enable as I wrote above - able to break 128 bit encryption. That would be an easy problem for a working quantum computer. Has that problem been solved with supercomputers yet? |

Title: Re: I want 1. crystal cpu 1 with 80 zero x faster than Post by muso on Apr 28th, 2012 at 7:17am
This is only a 128qbit computer. That's roughly equivalent to a 256bit conventional computer. The technology works, but they are only at the crawling stage. It's almost inevitable that they will be able to break any encryption within the next 5 years.

I doubt that encryption will ever be broken - unless some mathmatician breaks the prime number theory. I think with the 1024 bit encryption there are more possibilities than there are atoms in the universe. |

Synthetic Photosynthesis. Google it. That's what we'd gain from Quantum Computing. Remember the old Norwegian Fairy Tale about the mill that produced salt? http://myth-making.blogspot.com.au/2007/07/why-sea-is-salt.html Dare to imagine one that produces carbon fibre building products out of thin air. ;) |
