Title: A TIP FOR CLEANING OLD JEWELLERY
Post by red baron on Apr 16th, 2012 at 2:56pm
A handy little tip for cleaning old jewellery, even crystal vases etc.

Soak it for a few hours in sugar soap.  It will comes up looking like it has just been made.

I was amazed when a friend showed me the trick.

you could try to throw her out, she'll leave with all the jewellery, after having throw the vases at you ... presto, no more dirty vases or jewellery to worry about ..

Oh come on, Wharfy.

We all know that old jewellery becomes bright and shiny simply from being in the same room as you.

Hmmm...all I know is transducers in the tank emit waves which create bubbles in your liquid which "explode" and take all the gunk off with it.  It's what they use in mining labs to remove the flux, and they use em in jewellery stores too.

The beauty is they only take a few minutes to clean to new condition.  the downside is it'll cost you $700+ depending on size of the tank.

But can you really put a price on having clean sparkling jewellery?

$100 buys you a reasonable ultrasonic jewellery cleaner.

$25 from Aldi.

I have an ultrasonic parts cleaner (10L) - $230 about 10 years ago and it does an excellent job. It's big enough to throw a couple of carby bodies in.

They aren't quick. You can do the job quicker manually in less time than with an ultrasonic jobby, but I reckon the ultrasonic does a more perfect job with far less effort (if you don't mind waiting around for 45mins to an hour).

From what I saw, the Aldi device is big enough to put a reasonable amount of items in. It's big enough to do a watch.

$100 will buy you a shithouse ultrasonic bath, which would be why it takes 45 minutes rather than 3-5 minutes for a good unit.  The tolerator only deals in quality - remember I do velly speshul plice.

My 10 litre thingy will clean bike parts in a few minutes, but it all depends on just how fine the detail is and how ingrained the dirt and tarnishing is.

Even if you buy a cheapy and it does take 30+ minutes - does it really matter? It's not like you're going to be standing by the thing, repeating "hurry up!" to it.

The bubbles actually "implode" and that is what sucks the gunk out.

Just a word of warning - Keep opals and pearls out of ultrasonic cleaners and don't soak them in sugar soap either.  Just a quick scrub with an old toothbrush and some warm soapy water and rinse and dry them straight away.  :)
