Its on tonight @ 8:30 channel 10.

I have seen it before and may have it on blu-ray stuck in a box somewhere from moving. It was brilliant. The cgi was great. The technology is really coming along with that kind of thing.

One problem though. My flatmate is religious. I dont know what religion he is but he watches religious tv on sunday mornings instead of going to church and is pretty weird. We dont discuss it unless its unavoidable. Anyway i asked if he was going to watch avatar tonight and he said no its too evil. I asked what was evil about it and he said he just "knows these things".

I dunno. I thought it was great. Im watching it again tonight. I will keep my eyes peeled for evilness though,

Your flatmate sounds like he's going to be a barrel of laughs.

The 'evil' thing could have been the simple plot line that works as a metaphor to represent every invasion in the history of the planet.

Oh well. I couldn't find the "evil". Well the "humans" were a bit evil destroying that tree but somehow I doubt that was the evil referred to. I dunno its a good movie. Spoiled by all those ads - next time I will watch it on dvd.

No. A hole in the ground. About body sized if a little trimming with the chainsaw is performed.

I watched Avatar on DVD.

I just saw Avatar as a morality tale, set in an imaginary locale.

It was mildly 'engaging'.

And i enjoyed watching it.

I'd rather watch Avatar, rather than many of the programs served up on free TV in the evenings these days.

e.g.
Soaps and 'reality TV' types of programs,  ......i'd rather watch paint drying, rather than watch the usual offerings, on TV of an evening,
OR, preferably, read my bible, and meditate upon what i had just read.         ;)         ;D

Well,  I'd not seen Avatar before last night fta on Ch.?.

I woke up at about the time the fake was being accepted into the 'people'.
Watched it till the end.  Not bad. :)

I imagine Avatar 2 will deal with the return of the despicable humans.
'd like to see 'm get blown to smithereens!!! all over again.!! ;D

Well, the obvious messages were environmental, moral,  and a clear message that we should try to understand and respect other cultures.

I have a lot of affinity with that movie. It's a very commercial "blockbuster", but it still sends a shiver down my spine. Not only that, it's a voice against corporate bullying and cultural intolerance.  I just hope that the people who saw it are motivated to press for action on global climate change.

As for me, I'm seriously contemplating making an appointment with It_Is_the_Light  to fix my DNA tomorrow so I can hop on the next interstellar  bus, and migrate to Pandora.

Who knows, maybe blue is the new green  ;)

OK, it's basically a Hollywood action movie and it's a load of fun, but this time round, the macho action men don't win in the end.

Does your flatmate post on here under the alias of Corporate Whitey? Sure sounds like him, although I suppose it could be his brother

Yeah. Not sure so much about environmental issues - yeah it was a tree but the tree was thier life. It was (imo) more about actually learning something about a culture before trying to change/destroy it. Those "destroyers" didnt want to hear that the tree was integral to the life of those ppl - all they wanted was their dollar. IMO it was the early settlers of Australia (and other coutnries) all over again.

I found the movie pretty mediocre nothing in the poll for me then.

The plot did not excite me and the message was nothing new. All it really was when you cut through the prattle was very pretty.

Your flatmate sounds like the kind who wont try something at all for some reason so minute and petty they fall back to default excuses.  The quibble is probably so tiny they could not pin it down and gave up.

The plot wasnt what impressed me most about the movie. the programming and effects were. The technology to make that kind of environment and those characters movements were so real.

I thought the movie was great in that it was something new in a very stale Hollywood of re-runs and dredged up 'old' stories like marvel comics.
In truth, the plot was based upon the Pocahontas legend.
It was pro-environmentalism. Which is ok. But also Anti-Militarianism. Which didn't go down to well with a lot of 'powerful' Americans and thus it was quite coincidental that a movie that earned the industry something like .05% of what Avatar made got the nod at the Academys.
Yep - The Hurt Locker. To me a boring 'episodal' piece of Military propoganda if ever there was one. Coincidently directed by Cameron's Ex-Wife. ;)

I found the movie 'visually' great - a real work of ART and I enjoyed it for what it was. The plot was tame, but you wouldn't want to over-complicate the audience to much with such visual newness and a intricate plot.

I always find Cameron's movies 'Daring' in that he likes to break new boundaries with film making. Hell, he even beat that aviator Richard Branson in a race to the bottom of the Mariana Trench (13km underwater).

Think of a people who farm and garden and then suddenly have the military kick you off the land for something else that another group of people want like 'gold'.

...its a movie about someone being mugged by someone else.

***** Stars ;)

...loved those bioluminescent scenes. I have a black-light blue for my daughter.

Why was it pro-environmentalism? Because there was a tree?

- because the humans were disrupting the ecology.  Eywa is like "Gaia". Apart from the "religious" overtones, it's a very powerful ecosystem that regulates life on the planet.  It contrasted a society that was closely entwined with the environment with one that just wanted to exploit it.

Did you notice how the environment of Pandora- all the plants and animals turned against the aliens (humans)?

Yeah. I guess. However the scientist said it was because they were all linked in a way that implied it was all 1 organism. So I thought anyway. Maybe it was about environmentalism I dunno.

The implied warning is that "Gaia" (the Earth's ecosystem) will have its revenge on mankind too.  Maybe the Earth's "immune system" will remove humanity as an undesirable infection? Google "Geophysiology"

I don't think there's any doubt there is a strong environmental theme to this movie.

As Muso says, about our Gaia, there is a clear warning. Cameron knows his stuff.

Because of course, we SHOULD all interact in symbiosis ...but we do not. We seem to have killed off our greater consciousness,  Our 'universal' consciousness, for want of the right term  ::) which enables(d) us to connect.!!,
