Refugees lost in Indonesian waters

A BOAT carrying 60 asylum seekers heading to Australia was last night missing in Indonesian waters.

Indonesia's search and rescue agency received a distress signal via the Australian Maritime Safety Authority yesterday afternoon but there are fears the vessel has already sunk.

A spokeswoman for Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said Indonesian authorities were carrying out the search, but that Australia was ready and willing to assist if required. "If they need assistance we'd be ready to help," she said.

can we assume that the boats they are using are more and more unseaworthy. people smugglers dont care why should they?..I dont even think the Indonesian govt cards either to be honest.. once they leave their shores they dont have the problem do they?  if the boats stop coming then these people end up in Java..

A lie is a statement made with the intent to deceive. If when she made the statement about the carbon tax, Julia Gillard INTENDED to introduce a tax anyway, then she lied. But there is no evidence of that.

Gillard BROKE HER WORD which is quite different from a lie. She promised not to do something, then changed her mind and did it.

But she did not tell a lie.

The current NZ government is taking a different line from the previous Labour administration which, out of friendship, helped Australia out by taking some surplus asylum seekers. They were quickly processed and moved out into the wider community.

Red, nothing, repeat NOTHING will stop desperate people from trying to get to Australia. It makes sense to recognise that and deal with them sensibly and humanely.

The numbers are not large. Why Australians have such a "thing" about this topic I do not know. To an non-Australian the attitude of many Aussies, including your good self, does not seem to be very Australian.

I'll go sp far as to agree with you that, maybe, Gillard hadn't intended to bring in the carbon tax at the time of her promise however, a promise, especially from a PM, has to be sacred not, to be dismissed it with a choreographed wave of the hand.

We has a 30 minute window to respond to take out the missile launch after it is detected.
There is no where for a sniper to be, there is no time to put in position.
This is in land we has given to the Palestinians - we can not have snipers in Gaza.

We bomb Gaza -- we do not put Israeli lives at risk with sniper.

Don't fire the missile, then no F-16 comes.

There are no pioneers among our migrants - they are happy to crowd the coastline and line up at Centreink offices and that's "despicable".

Howard did the same thing. Everyone was getting panicky about the GFC hitting, so he did everything in his power to get defeated.

Looks like it might backfire though, it's been slower to hit our shores than we first thought.

It appears that 'not understanding the situation' means 'my POV MUST be right and so everybody else is wrong'. Well we know there's a lot of that about, especially in Israel. Fact is not all refugees are Asian, but those that are, are going to an Asian country, (Australia) which their people have traded with, visited and settled on for thousands of years. Yerps, ( the endearing name George Bush gave to Europeans) have been here only for the life span of a tortoise.

Anyone who is familiar with the enormous problems experienced in Europe and Great Britain in regard to multiculturalism should realise that we have a developing situation up north that is growing by the day.

When Howard was in, it was 2 boats a year...now it could well be hundreds. This is a situation that is out of control and JULIAR (There will be no carbon tax in a Government I lead) GILLARD hasn't got the first clue in what to do about it, save, sticking her head in the sand and hoping it will go away.

This is costing the Country - billions - it is uncosted and unfunded and is destroying the balance sheet. The Government would have the guts to tell us just exactly what the cost is. Most assuredly it is well into the billions.

The situation whilst getting really bad will be remedied when the LIBERALS return to power in 2013.

The CARBON TAX will end up where is should be in the local dump, along with all of the other hopeless ideas of a Government, which doesn't know how to run a Country.

The polls suggested that the voting was close and that's the reason she opened her mouth and made that promise.

If she hadn't, Abbott would have been in power and even some  Labor people are honest enough to admit this.

I'm glad you've cleared that up. It's a tragic loss of life. I'm sure olde.sault would rather that they had of made it safely to Australia than drown at sea.

I'm not at all stone-hearted and I would never have sent my children on such a journey alone.

I remember going through hell when, because of ten days in hospital, mine had to be placed in the care of relatives whom they hadn't even met.

After they were returned it took time and effort to win back their sense of security.

That is what I can't understand about the boat people.

If conditions are that bad in their homelands, how can the protectors, the men, leave their families behind?

Voting was close, hence a hung parliament, how astute of you .... but how many votes can you directly apply to the promise of no carbon tax? Not what you think should have or could have been, but how many are you aware of that voted labor purely because of her statememt on carbon tax?  ...  it wasn't a big deal until after the election ... everyone was going on about pink batts and stabbing rudd in the back etc .. carbon tax was lucky if it made a mention on the news once.

You hit on a very good point and one i would have thought would help you to understand why they are refugees. That sense of security you speak of, that is the very thing they have never had and will never get in there countries. They often lie in bed not knowing if the militia will roll through town killing and raping for fun.

Not if 'HE' is the target, and not the family ... besides,  someone has to go and find somewhere for them to live ... these are often people with little or no education, no knowledge of what awaits them, do you suggest the mother leaves in search of something and leaves the kids with the dad? no one knows what they will find, so dragging the kids into the unknown isn't an option.  ...

The saddest thing is that our political leaders, rather than uniting in a humanitarian cause, have turned the asylum seeker issue intio a political football. The Labor Party should be ashamed of the way it is behaving.
