IT MAY be popular now, but Labor's $36 billion national broadband network is shaping up to be a financial disaster that will set Labor's image back decades, rebranding it the party of waste and extravagance.

That's the view of Percy Allan, president of the Australian Institute of Public Administration and a former head of the NSW Treasury under premiers Wran, Greiner and Fahey.

Releasing a report card on "public policy drift", he told the Herald that Kevin Rudd came to office in 2007 promising "evidence-based" decision-making, but never spelled out what the term meant.

Damn the person who wanted to drag us into the future. Copper wires were good enough for my grand dad to talk over the bakelite telephone once a week so it should be good enough for the next few generations and their new fangled communications.

Aussies support NBN by two to one - poll

AUSTRALIANS supporting the high speed national broadband network (NBN) exceed opponents by more than two to one, a new survey shows.

The Essential Research survey released today showed 56 per cent of 1042 respondents were in favour of the NBN, up from 54 per cent when the question was previously asked in April 2011.

As well, support for the $35.9 billion project has risen by eight percentage points from 48 per cent in February last year.

Some 25 per cent of those surveyed opposed the NBN, down from 31 per cent in February 2011.

I have no problem with new technology. But as we have seen in the past, Labor has an atrocious record when it tries to behave like a business when in government. This is another example of that record. The NBN should have been put out to tender and done by businesses who know what they are doing because Labor clearly has no freaking idea.
