Abortion to blame for fires says Pastor

The Catch the Fire Ministries has tried to blame the bushfires disaster on laws decriminalising abortion in Victoria.

The evangelical church's leader, Pastor Danny Nalliah, claimed he had a dream about raging fires on October 21 last year and that he woke with "a flash from the Spirit of God: that His conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb".

Pastor Nalliah said he was helping to co-ordinate fire relief, including providing trucks to distribute clothes and food and giving his own blood, but he said he must tell "the truth".

Asked by the Sydney Morning Herald if he did not believe most Australians would regard his remarks as being in appallingly bad taste, he said today: "I must tell people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear."

He said it was no use "molly-coddling" Australians.

Asked if he believed in a God who would take vengeance by killing so many people indiscriminately - even those who opposed abortion, Mr Nalliah referred to 2 Chronicles 7:14 to vouch for his assertion that God could withdraw his protection from a nation.

"The Bible is very clear," he said. "If you walk out of God's protection and turn your back on Him, you are an open target for the devil to destroy."

In the New King James version of the Bible, 2 Chronicles 7:14 states that: "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land."

Mr Nalliah said: "In my dream I saw fire everywhere with flames burning very high and uncontrollably. With this I woke up from my dream with the interpretation as the following words came to me in a flash from the Spirit of God: that His conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb."

The former Treasurer, Peter Costello, sent a video message to an Australia Day prayer meeting organised by Pastor Nalliah.

He quoted a headline describing the fires as "The Darkest hour for Victoria". "A few months ago the news media should have reported 'the darkest hour for the unborn', but unfortunately the 'Decriminalisation of Abortion bill' went through parliament and was passed, thus making many people call Victoria 'the baby killing state of Australia,' " Mr Nalliah said.

Pastor Nalliah said there may be criticism. But he said he did not send out his media statement thoughtlessly. "We spend two days working on it."

He had previously said drought and the world financial crisis could be partly blamed on human sin.

Frances, the point is that you can find idiots in all organisations.

Hilali was not "Grand Mufti" of Australia. Australia does not have such a position.

The title was bestowed upon Hilali by a small organisation that has very few members. This organisation has since removed the title from Hilaly.

Danny Nalliah, who also should be ignored, is the leader of a religious organisation in Melbourne known as the evangelical Catch the Fire Ministries.

Most Christians probably would not support Danny Nalliah's comments, just as most Muslims do not support the comments of Hilaly.

First the Europeans tried to tax the Muslim traders out of their traditional trading areas. Then, when that was not entirely successful, the first peice of legislation passed by the new racist Australian government in 1901 was the Immigration Restriction Act or the White Australia policy.

I have explained to you before that the word in the Quran "awliya" does not mean "friends".

"Awliya" means "protectors" or "guardians".

The Quran tells Muslims not to take Christians or Jews for guardians or protectors.

The word for friend "sadeeq" does not appear in these verses.

The Quran tells us that:

God does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, God loves those who deal with equity.

By saying that, are you telling me that you consider Hilali to be an idiot?  And what do you think of the various comments he made?  I note that you say most Muslims do not support the comments of Hilaly, but I would be interested to know a bit more as to how they were received by Australian Muslims in particular and Muslims generally. They certainly didn't go down well with non-Muslim Australians.

Hilali was not "Grand Mufti" of Australia. Australia does not have such a position. The title was bestowed upon Hilali by a small organisation that has very few members. This organisation has since removed the title from Hilaly.

The organisation that supported him at the time did only have the support itself of a minority of Australian Muslims, but as I recall they did have more than a "very few members".  Do we have any idea of the numbers of people involved in this group?

The thing that stands out most about Hilaly's comments was watching Keyser Trad trying to minimise the fall out. You could almost see him cringe every time someone handed the Sheikh a microphone - which is something, because he's done some pretty cringeworthy stuff himself.

The uncovered meat comments were made at the time of the Skaf sentencing, I believe. There were elements within the Muslim community that felt the 55yr sentence unfair when compared to the sentences of non-Muslims for similar crimes.

I agree with that somewhat; most rapists should receive similar lengths of time in prison to Bill Skaf.

I'm not convinced about that Annie. My concern is if the sentences for rape are equivalent to murder the victim has less chance of survival.

The mufti is a swell guy. I have the utmost respect for him. He plans to force the NRL and the AFL into the shade by introducing lapidations on Saturday at the Sydney Football Stadium and hand chopping at the 'G' on Sunday. I can't wait.
