Title: 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Central Australia
Post by PoliticalPuppet on Mar 23rd, 2012 at 9:21pm
Fairly big and shallow for Australia, USGS has it at 5.6 and I think that has already been downgraded from 5.7/.8

Follows a smaller earthquake near the same area a few days ago which was the first quake we have seen in Australia for a while.

Not unusual for that area tho, just rare.

On a worldwde basis of course earthquakes of this magnitude are very common. There are typically about 50 per week.

Yeah I know but for mainland Australia its not so common.. We do get big ones off shore more commonly either north north west of western australia or the ridge about 1000km to the south of australia

Piers Corbyn does earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis, hurricanes and English surf. It's the sun.

Doesn't one one the Labor pollies want to store the world's nuclear waste somewhere inland in Australia ?

What happens if an earthquake breaks up the storage facility where this stuff is stored ? A little Japan ?

A very fruity fruitloop.  Its a form of modern day "reading the tea leaves".   Simply wrap it up in some little understood concept, and sell it for a fortune.

Yeah, what a great idea that was.... NOT.

We've got to store the stuff safely for 10,000 years, and lest than a month after the plan was put up the region has an earthquake.

;D

Central Australia is a pretty good location, especially if it's stored underground in a natural granite batholith. If they do the right thing and store the waste as borosilicate glass, the consequences would be zero.

Not sure what you mean by a little Japan. The last incident there that resulted in significant radiation related deaths was in 1945. As far as I'm aware there were no radiation related deaths from the Fukushima incident.  The only deaths will be from Greenpeace activists scaring people to death.

A magnitude 6 would have nil consequences for a properly constructed underground storage facility. If you want to contest that, I'm happy to discuss the facts.
