A re-elected Labor government will spend $12 million to provide more health checks for Queensland men.

Premier Anna Bligh visited a pharmacy in Toowoomba on Wednesday, where she announced a series of health programs targeted at men.

Ms Bligh said that if elected on March 24, Labor would pilot Queensland's first prostate cancer nursing program.

The program would employ 12 new specialist prostate cancer nurses who would be based in all the major regional centres.

Twenty new "man vans" would travel around Queensland offering "pit stop" health workshops and check-ups on weight, diet, exercise, alcohol and drug use.

The funding would also boost existing health programs, such as Mates in Construction and the Bust a Gut Challenge.

Actually I thought that was a good idea.  Men are generally reluctant to consult a doctor about anything, so maybe providing a service such as this could improve their health situation.

It's rather like a male version of the mobile breast cancer screening program, and I don't think anyone is suggesting that is a bad thing....

Yep, but that's precisely why it won't work.

You can't just take a scheme designed for women, rebadge it and expect men to be as enthusiastic about it as women were.

Mens health is a serious issue and even more so in regional areas.

When you look at the serious mental health issues, obesity, drug and alcohol abuse that occurs in regional areas it is a very good idea.
Like I said though...12 million dollars wont go very far.

Does anybody really need a doctor in a van to tell them that being a fat, idle, drug-addled, booze- swilling slob isn't healthy?

I don't think this is a very good idea either. More has to be done to address men's health, but I doubt this is the answer.

It might be worth a try - on a small scale at first though.
