Title: Should Voluntary Euthanasia Be An Election Issue? Post by Greens_Win on Mar 1st, 2012 at 10:06am
Dutch launch mobile euthanasia teams
Six specialised teams will criss-cross the Netherlands to carry out euthanasia at the home of patients whose own doctors refuse to do so, a pro-euthanasia group said. "From Thursday, the Levenseindekliniek (Life-end clinic) will have mobile teams where people who think they comply with the criteria for euthanasia can register," Right-to-die NL (NVVE) spokeswoman Walburg de Jong said. "If they comply, the teams will carry out the euthanasia at patients' homes should their normal doctors refuse to help them." Ms De Jong says the group, called the Life-end clinic, has teams made up of a specially-trained doctor and nurse who will work part time, visiting patients all over the Netherlands. The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise euthanasia in April 2002, and has strict criteria regulating how such mercy killings can be carried out. Patients must be mentally alert when making the request to die. Patients also have to face a future of "unbearable, interminable suffering" and both the patient and the doctor - who have to obtain a second opinion - before euthanasia is carried out, must agree there is no cure. Each euthanasia case is then reported to one of five special commissions, each made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert charged with verifying that all criteria had been observed. The mobile euthanasia plan, which received the thumbs-up from Dutch health minister Edith Schippers in the Dutch parliament, has been met with scepticism from one of the Netherlands' largest medical lobbies. The Royal Dutch Society of Doctors says it doubts whether the "euthanasia doctors" will be able to form a close enough relationship with a patient to make a correct assessment. Ms De Jong says around 3,100 mercy killings are carried out each year in the Netherlands and that the NVVE has already been phoned by 70 potential patients since the plan was announced in early February. The NVVE says its teams are expected to receive around 1,000 assisted suicides requests per year. http://abc.com.au/news/2012-03-01/dutch-launch-mobile-euthanasia-teams/3861636 |

Its a tough one because half way through last week I was praying for a quick and painless death. A few days later I was on the mend..today Im back at the Gym, full of beans and ready for work next week.
But seriously..Euthanasia is an important topic and as a supporter I reckon it should be an election issue. |

Euthanasia should be, but never will be.
Because if they talk about that, it brings up the matter of rights. Something that the government has been taking away for quite some time. Of course people should have the right to do what they want to their own body whether it be euthanasia, drugs, prostitution or anything along those lines. But the government prefers not to talk about it because they know they are wrong. Its how they make their money and without it, the chains on society become weaker and likewise with the government. |

Euthanasia is a key plank of the Communist Greens platform for a very good reason.
It is well known by informed people that Prime Minister Bob Brown of the Communist Greens has a burning desire to see Australia become a primitive agrarian economy with EVERYTHING controlled by a central "government" - in other words Uncle Bob wants Australia to become a COMMUNIST country. Part of the Communist ethic is that people are regarded as farm animals who are useful only while they can work for the Communist good. The question naturally arises, what should be done with people who are too old and or too sick to be productive farm animals any more ? The answer ? Simple, have legalized euthanasia and secret police. The process is for the secret police to visit any unproductive farm animals and put them down under the legalized euthanasia law. Great idea - no old or sick people to pay welfare for and only productive farm animals in the economy. |

Does the Liberals still accept donations off the cigarette industry? Because if anyone forces non voluntary euthanasia onto Australians then it's the political party that supports cigarette deaths for financial political donations. Cigarette forced euthanasia via addiction and forced euthanasia via passive smoking and forced euthanasia of children via being poisoned by having addicted smoking parents. So if Liberals support forced euthanasia via cigarettes, why do they oppose voluntary euthanasia of terminal patients? |

So you are a Greenie at heart Australia should follow the lead of Canada and the Netherlands and bring our combat troops home from Afghanistan, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today. "Canada's 2,800 combat troops are preparing to go home. The Netherlands have already gone, after the collapse of public support and the Dutch government over whether to extend their mission," Senator Brown said in Hobart. "A Galaxy poll at the weekend showed most Australians want our troops brought home from Afghanistan and that should be heeded by the Government and Opposition. This level of opposition is higher than during the Vietnam War." There have been 27 Australian Defence Force personnel killed and 181 ADF members wounded in action in Afghanistan since 2002. http://greens.org.au/content/bring-combat-troops-home-afghanistan-brown Four Pillars of The Greens Movement Ecological wisdom Social justice Grassroots democracy Nonviolence Australians protest Iraq war As part of an international weekend of protest on the fourth anniversary of the US-British-Australian invasion of Iraq, 800 people participated in an anti-war rally and march on March 17 that began at Sydney Town Hall. Demanding an end to the US-led war in Iraq, the protesters also called for the Australian troops and Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks to be brought home. All fine and dandy in principle.
However people should look at the Netherlands where it has been practiced for some time now. In 1990 the Remmelink Report found that most cases of euthanasia were involuntary ie no consent was given, and that euthanasia accounted for 9.1% of the overall death rate. It includes those just suffering depression. In some parts of the Netherlands people are afraid to seek medical treatment. |

I object in the strongest possible terms to the state playing god and a Euthanasia program is just that a step towards the abolishing of the sanctity and the inalienable right to life. No law can be passed on this issue that I would ever recognize the legitimacy of - this is not a popularity contest or a matter of a vote - I will never recognize the states right to terminate life through Euthanasia and would regard every instance as malicious state murder. Why should your opinion dictate the way another lives their life? What right do you have to say someone cant do something to themselves, just like you wouldnt want someone to do the same to you. Law should not make illegal victimless crime because it makes the innocent victims, which defeats the purpose of law. |

There is nothing voluntary about it when the state, the corporation or the church is involved in killing. Any killing by a sovereign overarching universal government can by definition not be a matter of free will and choice on the part of the victim. No form of external governing force can be involved in a person deciding to end their life and ending it or it is not free, it is not voluntary and we are all at risk from an external Governing entity deciding to end our life on any manner of pretexts and justifications... 8-) 8-) 8-)

Polling shows the majority of Australians think we should be entitle to this decision. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yn-eejMcmuA Santorum ‘grossly mischaracterized’ Netherlands euthanasia policy GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s “demagogic” social message of women flying small planes, worship of Israel and winking at Iran has another bizarre twist and includes elderly Dutch people wearing “Do not euthanize me” bracelets. The Dutch government is being urged to make a public statement over Santorum’s recent comments on the Dutch euthanasia policy, in which the Republican presidential hopeful falsely claimed forced euthanasia in the Netherlands is responsible for five percent of the country’s deaths. Labour MP Frans Timmermans is calling on Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal to make a public statement over the “scandalous” comments ushered forth by Santorum. “I have asked him to make a public statement. This cannot be allowed to rest,” Timmermans said on his Facebook page, according to Dutch News. American media has finally begun scrutinizing comments Santorum has made in his run to the top of recent polls, showing him out in front of the GOP field. In the scrutiny was evidence of false claims by the Pennsylvania senator, called one of the most corrupt senators in the United States in 2006, over the Netherlands’ euthanasia policy. A video posted to YouTube by Right Wing Watch, an arm of People for the American Way, shows Santorum stating the elderly Dutch wear a bracelet which reads “Do not euthanize me.” He continues with his pronouncement, Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands, but half the people who are euthanized every year — and it’s 10 percent of all deaths for the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily, at hospitals, because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital, they go to another country, because they’re afraid because of budget purposes that they will not come out of that hospital if they go into it with sickness. The New York Times notes the Dutch ambassador to the US has refused comment on Santorum’s remarks, who has said the Dutch government’s preference is not to get involved in the American presidential race. Voluntary euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002, and accounted for about two percent of deaths in 2010, Dutch News reports. The procedure requires consent of two doctors and is carried out under strict conditions. Dutch embassy spokeswoman Carla Bundy told the Washington Post, “According to the Ministry of Health, ‘Do not euthanize me’ bracelets do not exist in the Netherlands.” FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan group which monitors U.S. politicians’ factual accuracy, said Santorum, during his participation at religious forum earlier in February, “grossly mischaracterized” the Netherlands euthanasia policy. Last week, Common Dreams said Santorum is delivering a "demagogic social message," betrayed by his Mister Rogers appearance. Santorum’s campaign has not responded to requests for explanations where the “corrupt” Senator’s sources obtained information for his euthanasia comments. http://digitaljournal.com/article/320241 |

Motor Vehicles kill and people purposely take mind altering drugs either legally and illegally and then get behind a wheel. Should we use this small percentage of people to stop all people from driving vehicles ... or do we continue and have the Laws sort these issues. I take it you oppose all forms of state sanctioned death. How about abortion when the mother's life is at risk? |

A 1990 report had the death rate in the Netherlands from eurthanasia running at 9.1% of total deaths of which the report found the majority were without concent. That is not a small percentage. Now who is throwing out red herrings?...this is about euthanasia not abortion. |

The question is without relevance, meaning or foundation as the issue involves the right of the state to perform a procedure where its intent is to terminate life. Its the word "intent" with regard to human life which is key here in the performance of any procedure. So again, your question is irrelevant... 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) |

Yet dutch legalised voluntary euthanasia came into law in 2002. Why are you quoting from 1990. or are you trying to paint suicides as euthanasia? |

Euthanasia has been practiced in the Netherlands with the government and courts turning the other way since about the early 1980's. Which is more or less the same as legalisation. In fact there has been an agreement between the Dutch Ministry of Justice and the Royal Dutch Medical association since 1990 where doctors have been granted immunity from prosecution. The Holland Government Remmelink Report into the practice found the following numbers of patients and circumstances of their deaths - 400 - Doctors supplied means to kill themselves to patients. 2300 - Doctors complied with reqests. 1040 - Doctors actively killed patients without knowledge or consent. 4941 - Doctors administered letal doses of morphine without patients knowledge or consent. So no...not suicides. |
