Title: Sick Teeth = Low Productivity
Post by Greens_Win on Feb 28th, 2012 at 7:51am
A Sick Workforce means a Low Productivity Workforce

So will Labor and the long term Opposition support lifting Australia's productivity be supporting a National Denticare Scheme?

REPORT WARNS $10B REQUIRED TO FIX DENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM

A report on the state of the nation's teeth has found the nation's dental health is getting worse and a universal Denticare scheme is the solution.

The has found childhood oral disease dropped off in the 1970s but started to creep back up in the last decade, and increased sugar consumption is being blamed.

It has concluded too many Australians have poor oral health and as a result suffer pain and social exclusion.

Poor oral health in childhood can be a precursor to severe disability in adult life and in rare cases death.

The out-of-pocket cost to the health system per year is about $4.5 billion, but the report says the price tag for fixing the system so that those who need dental services can afford them is at least double that.

The report says low socio-economic groups - those in remote areas, Indigenous Australians, the frail and disabled, the homeless and prisoners - are most at risk.

It also recommends federal, state and territory governments invest more than $10 billion extra to fix the system.

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says the Government cannot afford to take on all the suggested changes at once, but she is considering a staged approach that would target children and low income groups first.

But the Greens say the report should shame the Federal Government into making a commitment to establish Denticare in this year's federal budget.

Greens Senator Richard Di Natale says an extra $400 million should be made available in the May budget as a first step towards overhauling the system.

"We think that's a sensible recommendation along with a range of foundational activated that begin the work to establish Denticare," he said.

He says the review has vindicated his party's calls for a universal dental scheme.

"It's all about priorities. It is a bold and ambitious reform we're aware of that, but we're a wealthy country and we can afford it," he said.

Good idea, unfortunately Labor will want to introduce another tax before spending a cracker.

I remember reading once how the hospitals could be de-clogged with a much better dental system as many infections etc stem from poor dental health.

I dont think any party is denying more money needs to be spent in this area.

Just what sort of altruist are you? That AUD$10 billion has been set aside for processing alleged refugees and asylum shoppers. Toss in a bit of multicultural madness and that soaks up a heap of cash. Let's not forget English language lessons for non English speakers and there ain't much dosh left.

Be a good altruist.

My dentist said the same thing.
He once went off on one about the lack of care that the Australian Governments have shown for near on 20 years in dental care.

He said the bad reputation that dentists get are from people who have left it too late and get the impression going to see them is a painful experience!

And they put it off because it costs them to much money because the government doesnt support it!

To the average family, its not hard to spend $500 in a dentist.

So you are calling for a harder line to be taken on plane refugees ... at least now you are starting to reduce your hypocrisy on that issue.

Meanwhile as we all know, Australia is a wealthy country and by lifting Australian dental health, we lift productivity and so financial profit. Bigger return via tax intake and share dividends.

Win, win, win, in all directions.

This is very true bad teeth does have a significant impact on productivity and incentive to work.  Heck if middle class welfare was not ripping so much money off the productive sector for its massive salaries and bonuses our health and quality of life over all would be massively improved as would productivity... 8-) 8-) 8-)

Early retirement. :)
Cool. 8-)
After working full time since 8/1/75, I won't shed a tear.
Perhaps the government should have the unemployed house cats be more productive might be the way to go, instead of just soaking up taxpayers funds every fortnight without giving anything back to society.

Its a little known fact but the communist middle class welfare system causes tooth decay, kills incentive, kills economic activity, causes obesity and many other malaise in society.  You can keep filling up the country with imports hoping at least someone will start a business or work for you as a casual for more than a month, but the fact is no serious business man would want to start a business in a shythole unstable economy like Australia and no blue collar worker wants casual work p- they want secure, full time work - 38hrs per week, super and all the rest of it you are trying to rob them of... :P :P

We are just about all supplied with fluoridated water now. It has been described as the best method of peventing cavites. Of course it is not pharmaceutical grade added being waste from the aluminium industry that also contains arsenic, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, etc but hey the industry has to do something with it and they can't even dump the stuff at sea under international law. John Spencer of Adelaide University who also is funded by Colgate says bottled water drinkers and migrants are causing any cavities in fluoridated areas. Despite his own research that showed no statistical difference between those drinking town supplies vs tank water in caries experience. So you only have cavities if your a yuppi, a migrant, a liar or you drilled holes in your teeth yourself. Water fluoridation has cured dental decay so why are you spreading all this misinformation when we all have wonderful teeth.
;D

"plane refugees"?

What have they got to do with neglected teeth?

Overstayers of visas don't have any claim on any free medicine - I guess some are able to borrow a medicare card from a friend or relative  but not as far as dentistry.

In any case, why attack "plane"refugees - their presence is illegal but t least, they aren't parasites on Welfare as are the boat arrivals without documents.

Must all leftards twist and spin with the truth?

-------

I've had a couple of dentists disagree on poor teeth affecting the health.

I know it does, I was in the position of choking on my food because dental plates irritated my gums.

I just regretfully spent 12 grand on implants so don't choke any more.

However, whereas the Labor no-hoper government helps with some tooth needs they don't recognise  implants.

Being leftards, they haven't caught on.

This dental scheme is aimed at the unemployed and unemployable.
What 'productivity' increase do you expect to see from them?
They eat, crap, sleep and watch tele on gi-normous plasmas and not necessarily in that order.
This is just another 'black hole' for Labor to pour more billions of taxpayers money into.
Now I'm not saying we don't need a dental scheme, and the government can implement this in a dozen different ways.
But lets not pretend that the unemployed and unemployable are going to get jobs because of this.
Once the unemployed & unemployable have their rotten teeth fixed, they will be back to doing what they did to get their teeth in that state in the first place.
Grabbing that Coke, grabbing those Chips and sitting down to watch tele and forget about brushing the fangs twice a day.
Business as usual.

I agree with the head of he ADA (Aust Detal Assoc' ?)

They should focus more on people that do not have access to dental care.

Tell the bludgers with their hands out to brush their fn teeth.

If they abolish the GST and Carbon Tax then there would be enough funds from other tax revenues to fund this scheme... 8-)

Nah, the scheme is just another way for bludgers to dodge responsibility for looking after themselves.

The real people that need help are those that do not have access to proper dental care, not hands out bludgers.

People are entitled for some bang for their buck for all of the revenue the Government is raking in - its about time they became service oriented in the Government instead of sponging and bonus oriented....or just scrap the GST and Carbon tax which will automatically stimulate the economy, create wealth and by default increase other tax revenues which can be used productively instead of being pinched by fatcats... 8-) 8-) 8-)

What a novel idea!

As there are only so many dollars for a"free lunch" (health), the Govern. could stop treating cancer and direct those dollars to teeth!

I don't own a plasma TV, don't go away on holidays, don't smoke, gamble, drink sparingly so when I get health problems, my saved dollars takes care of them.
