Title: The praising of Turnbull Post by olde.sault on Feb 26th, 2012 at 10:11pm Can't get it - what has he done to deserve praise? Looks pretty good, speaks extra well but still, what has he done, even proposed to do that was outstanding? While leader of the opposition, his poll rating was poor (just a little better than that of Nelson) but the worst part about him was his approval of Labor's carbon tax. What was the carbon tax going to do for him while it put costs up, quickened job loss because this extra imposition would push more industries offshore if not into bankruptcy? And, who are we going to end up with, the unhinged Rudd or sly, lying Gillard doing Bob Brown's bidding? |

If he dropped his view on an emissions trading scheme, he would get my support.
I cannot warm to Abbott and I despise Gillard. Hence I would like Rudd as PM be default. If Turnbull was a choice and he dropped his ETS, its a no-brainer for me. He is a staunch supporter of market capitalism, he is an economic liberal like me on trade, he believes in a more progressive society but with traditional moral virtue and believe we can have both. He also speaks with authority and when he delivers an address he comes across as a leader. Gillard and Abbott are two of the worst speakers I have seen in modern political history. Sure there have been worse, but not many. |

Interesting point that, in the case of Gillard, while there are varied reasons given for disliking her, the most common (and almost unanimous) gratuitous criticism of her is her accent... This in a country whose citizens think we like to wear our patriotism on our sleeves (if you leave aside our paradoxical appetite for vassaldom), we still suffer from cultural cringe when we hear what is quintessentially and unmistakably an Australian accent. |

Come on, her accent is a lot more than "Australian". Speaking personally as someone who doesn't have an Australian accent in any way, I'd say Turnbull, Howard and Rudd - all decent speakers in my opinion - all have an unmistakeable Australian accent. Turnbull could speak at a convention in London tomorrow and a lot of people who would never have seen him before in their life would know he is Australian. Gillard's accent does make me cringe, there is no disguising that. My parents who hadn't heard her before when she spoke on UK television even made comment to me about "that god awful woman's accent"!! It's not the fact it is Australian. It is the fact it is pure Kath & Kim. |

_---------- I agree that Abbott is not a commanding speaker - that is why he hadn't aspired to the leadership until sheer desperation pushed him into challenging Turnbull. Again I ask, what had Turnbull said or done during his leadership to buy your or any other conservative's vote? How many billions had Rudd, as Foreign Minister, given away on his '07 travels? Is that our No 1 patriot? You have disappointed me. |

Its an easy question to answer, Turnbulls business, personal and political acheivments far outweigh phoney Tony's.
Unlike phoney Tony Malcolm does not thrive on negativity, political sleeze and divisiness and he does not seek to take credit for the achievments of others. Malcolm is the consumate professional where as Tony is one of the most unprofessional people to ever walk through the doors of our parliament. These are just a few of the things that make Malcolm Turnbull not only a better man than Tony Abbott but also what makes him a born leader. |

But the point of an opposition party is to give an opposing view. Turnbull's view's do not oppose the Governments view. So to have him as leader of the opposition would be removing choice from voters.

----- My question again: What has Turnbull done that makes him more electable today then when he served as Leader of the Opposition? Hadn't polls read him limping on 20%? C'mon, we know he is capable but what will he do for Australia other than approve just another tax to keep bureaucrats happily employed, business on the steady decline? |
