http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/12946169/asylum-seeker-boat-intercepted/
Australian authorities have intercepted an asylum-seeker boat carrying more than 80 people. HMAS Maitland, operating under the command of Border Protection Command, intercepted the vessel after it sought assistance northwest of Christmas Island on Friday night. It is believed there were 79 passengers and two crew members on board, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said in a statement on Saturday. It comes after two boats carrying more than 130 asylum seekers were intercepted off Christmas Island late on Thursday. Mr Bowen said the latest vessel was the sixth asylum-seeker boat to arrive since Opposition Leader Tony Abbott ended talks with the government on offshore processing. "We've always said that without a genuine deterrent such as the Malaysia arrangement, the boats will keep coming," Mr Bowen said. "This is another boat you can chalk down to the negativity of Tony Abbott." The passengers will be transferred to Christmas Island, where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established. |

What we currently have with this open door policy on border security with the red carpet rolled out to centrelink is the greens policy in action.
Labor need the greens to form a viable government so is anyone really surprised that we have the greens policy with border security? Rudd dismantled a policy that worked and Julia cannot do anything except implement the greens open door policy on border security. The dopey leftards think they can blame Tony for all their stuff ups. |

The last thing in the world Tony Abbott wants is to stop the boats.

This is partisan labor at its worst. It goes a little sumpin like dis.
Liberal policy on boat people is working. Our left dont like it because the country they use is not in the UN convention (or whatever the hell it is). We will change it to make liberals look bad at the same time appeasing our left. Dam there is no left solution that will work. We have to come up with sumpin. Malaysia deal is born, to hell with the left. What, Malaysia is worse than the original liberal policy. Sh.. well we cant go back to the liberal policy, we were trying to make them look bad in the first place. Oh dam now we have upset everyone and screwed up yet again. Well lets salvage this by trying to make it look like liberals don't want to fix a boat people problem that wasn't broken in the first place because they wanted and did fix the boat people problem. Oh bugger we can confuse ourselves, but let push on with it anyway, because this is what our brightest have come up with, the dumb fks. |

Liberal policy on boat people is working In terms of stopping the boats that in large is true. Though it had the same legal problems as Malaysia and should never have been an option. What, Malaysia is worse than the original liberal policy. Well it is as bad anyway. Well lets salvage this by trying to make it look like liberals don't want to fix a boat people problem Why not when it is true. The Liberals are blocking their own solution and clearly like the boats comming as long as they think Labor will be blamed. Its just a political game to them. The current Liberal policy is to turn back 100% of the boats - like that will work either - its not even possible.. |

you have to excuse DNA. since the labor party lost its way a couple years back, so did he. Once a reasonable poster, he is now nothing more than a cheersquad member for Gillard. The liberal policy was legal and effective and no amount of misquoting of stats or blatant lying will change that. the moment Rudd messed with it if fell apart. An every attempt by Gillard to repair the problem has been embarrassingly incompetent, humiliating and as usual, a complet fiasco. Only this red-haired twit could consider sending them to malaysia to be flogged as a solution, especially when they send us 5 times as many as we send them. tru stupidty, labor style. and defended to the hilt by dna. |

The liberal policy was legal and effective and no amount of misquoting of stats or blatant lying will change that. Why did abbott initially offer to assist changing the Legislation to allow off shore processing again. A major part of the decision discussed the treatment of children and found it not legal to off shore children. There were many children on Nauru. The vast legal consensus is that Nauru is no longer viable under the current legal framework - even Mr Abbott has moved on from Nauru as an option with his turn 100% of the boats back policy - after blocking legislative change to allow any off shore processing he had little other option. defended to the hilt by dna Rubbish I have consistently opposed off shore processing and do not support Malaysia - it is as bad as Nauru as you can see I stated above. Obviously saying this is in your opinion defending it to the hilt? The only point I make is that it would work just as Nauru did, a Horible unfair disgraceful solution - but it would work. Also that the current position is that Tony Abbott is the person blocking the use of any off shore processing. He is clearly opposing his own prefered policy for political gain. |

Regarding the red section, that is wrong. Detainees were treated well in Nauru and did not live in fear of being caned, as would have been the case if Gillard was able to send them to Malaysia. Regarding the pink section, you're an idiot. |

If Labor want the more expensive option of offshore processing then I do not understand why they don't just accept Tony Abbott's offer of Nauru and TPV's.....However turning the boats around will not work and put further lives at risk.....Neither side is covering themselves in glory over this issue to decide who is better at persecuting asylum seekers.....The solution is to take asylum seekers from detention centres in Indonesia and continue working to find and prosecute the people smugglers!!!

This was the previous position - around the 20th of Jan 2012 Mr Abbott was clearly stating the new position and it was to turn around all the boats. It does seem that this was a disaster for him - critisised by all - pointed out to be in breach of international Law and a danger to Australian lives. By the 22nd the When it is safe to do so was again being stated. He did get his hard line message out there though even if it was unrealistic he got the lowest common denominator vote onboard. |

Use some common sense, eh?!?! When it is safe to do so would include circumstances such as where sabotage has not been attempted, where the vessel is in good condition, where the weather would make a return journey safe and not dangerous. Just a few examples of where it would be safe to do so. |

How can it ever be safe when weather conditions can change in a matter of hours.....It is also Abbott's policy NOT to send asylum seekers to countries who have not signed the refugee convention which is why he will not support the Malaysian solution.....Indonesia has NOT signed the refugee convention so has that fact escaped your tiny mind.....Abbott is a populist fool who cares nothing about substance and hopes people will ignore his contradictions and hypocrisy so he can become PM at any cost....All Abbott is proposing is a future where he will tear everything apart and replace it with nothing accept the failure of the past.....The world has changed since we can persecute minorities and buy votes with tax cuts that erode the integrity of the budget....Australia cannot afford Tony Abbott!!! chook, from what I've gleaned from your previous posts I suspect that you understand quite well that it's never safe to turn boats around. Which means that Phoney Tony is being exactly that - a liar and a phoney. He knows as well as anyone that it's never safe. He knows it better than most because he was a government minister in a government that actually tried it and failed. So he wouldn't turn back a single boat. Not one. It's a shame you righties either don't have the comprehension skills to understand this simple fact or else completely lack the integrity to admit it. And please... turn them north. What a joke! I've asked you before - what will you do when they don't turn north? Think you want to have a stab at answering that this time? |
