Personally I don’t like guns, but I do believe they should be legal without strict licensing because:

1. Our army and police have them and we should be able to defend ourselves from them if need be.
2. There are always going to be illegal guns, so when you illegalize them you stop law abiding citizens from defending themselves and feeling protected.

If we could get rid of all guns then I would be happy for them to be illegal. But we’re not going to stop the illegal ones and were never going to take them away from our law enforcement.

The government shouldnt infringe on the right of the public for a crime they havent commited.

Criminals will get guns no matter what the 'law' says.

BUT.....

There are a HELL of a lot of smack-wits out there who are not necessarily
'criminals' as such, but who should NEVER be allowed access to guns.

I do not want this country to go down the road America chose, or to end
up like a Middle-Eastern cesspit where firing AK47s into the air seems to
be de rigeur at any public gathering.

One only has to read some of the outright hatred displayed on boards like
this to realise that giving people unrestricted access to guns is one VERY
bad idea.

Daily we see people calling for the death of politicians, paedophiles,
Muslims, Aborigines, the unemployed, 'bogans', exes and any number
of others. Much of this is merely 'hot-air', but by no means all of it.

How long before some nut-bar takes his LEGAL gun and decides to
take things into his own hands?

JUST like they do in the USA.

It might have some positive effects in places with high gun possession and homicide rates like in the US, but for places like here with relatively low gun possession and homicides rates it would be counter productive.

The US has around eight times the homicide rate than what we have here in Australia - most of them firearm related. Here fireams make up only a minority of homicide cases. If the US had a similar percentage of firearm homicides then they'd only have around an eighth the number of homicides - pretty much the same as here (per capita).

More guns in the community = more gun homicides.

It's damn safe here. Even the areas with bad reps are pretty damn safe. You're eight times less likely to end up a homicide statistic here than what you would be in the US.

At the moment Guns are almost all in the hands of evil - the corrupt Political class dictatorship and while they increasingly build up the fire power supporting their dictatorship they tighten up on ownership laws for citizens outside the political class which is interesting. I am in favor of an unarmed Police force and the military stood down except in times of war. 8-)

I like the Gun Laws in Bermuda, there is stuff all gun crimes in Bermuda.

5 Years jail for an unlicensed firearm.

An additional year for every bullet that is loaded into the gun.

A six shot revolver fully loaded gets you 11 years if you dont have a license.

Compare that to Australia.

I don't like any guns being in the hands of irresponsible people -
that can include police & security guards.
There are too many firearm incidents & it's about time
the rules were tightened up.

Yes all well and good, but the Uass has out of control gun violence so even if rates of crime reduce they are still out of control.

I am a gun owner, have been for a long time. I have no real issue with the gun laws they mean if you own them you take responsibility. As most people who live on property there is a point to the ownership so i really do have to wonder why city folk would want them. Sporting shooters not a problem.

I have always liked the saying "it's not the gun that is dangerous, rather the idiot holding it."

There was an incident in New Orleans where a house-owner blew off the head of a Korean tourist who was coming up his path to ask him directions!

I like the fact we can own a gun in the United States but there is some work to do on gun control nonetheless.

The last time I was there, I'd been there for about 6 weeks when we pulled over for something (okay, it was to roll a spliff) and some loon blasted a few shots off in our direction because he considered us to be trespassing. My girlfriend then reached into the glovebox, pulled out her handgun and started firing away in roughly the general direction of where the shots came from. I just wanted to drive off. The cops turned up and an old bloke (well past pension age) got cuffed and carried (3 cops) kicking and screaming to the cop car.

Yeah, I want that kind of sh!t going down here.

The low gun possession rate is a recent thing....Up until the 1970's or so, almost every home in Australia (city and country) had at least one gun in it......children ( particularly boys) generally received their first slug gun at about 8 yrs old...
And the homicide rate was less than it is now...

Two things;

Gun ownership has never (well, since ww1) exceeded around 25%.

The homicide rate during the 1970's was near twice what it is now (well, at least 1.5x).

They need guns not only to deal with violent perpetrators, but also as just a reminder to those who think about acting violently toward the police. They're already weak enough. Just recall the human trash at the 'occupy' movements who showed no fear toward the police because they knew they were already weak as piss and wouldn't do anything too violent.

One of the things I always find funny - is that the G20 "warriors" and those "battling capitalism" will then go and attack a McDonalds and scare the living daylights and terrorise a bunch of minimum wage workers!

Just like the anti-nazi league attacking the black police officer in the riot because he was black.

Sometimes you wonder if these idiots think through what they are doing?

Only the Australian Military should have Guns.
Not even the Police!
If you don't trust your Military - then stand up and try your luck with an uprising ya fool! Especially fools who aren't Military ::)
All gun ownership - like Hunters, should be under the responsibility of the Military - not Law.

As I said to a Cop who said "But criminals are armed!" in defense of having a gun.
"Well, you shouldn't have brought the criminals with you 200 years ago. You shouldn't have given them the right to bear arms. You should ring 000 and call the Military who will shoot that person dead as an act of War and not give them a 1 year sentence for murdering and unarmed innocent person.!!!!!"

The nation of Bolivia has zero tolerance on Guns. Only the Military has guns. If you are not the Military - you are shot dead. You can be a Drug Dealer and walk past a soldier without being bothered. But as soon as you pick up a gun. Bang - you're a dead enemy of the nation.

Its all about responsibility. If you want to playh with guns - go join the Military.
May the Australian Military gain independence from the whims of Western Politics too and PROTECT the animals of this world from extinction ...a good cause if ever there was one. ;) Hunters should protect their 'livelihoods' too, or don't you 'think'? :-?

I tend to dissagree with those stats BA.
Just like I dissagree with those 'polls' that made Sydney the 5th most liveable city in the world.
Or that SeaSports (formerly a Dive Shop in Jervis Bay) didn't pay to have their name in the Dive Mags stating they were Australia's #1 Dive Shop.

Hell, I do agree that Pinochet did get paid by the USA to cripple his own nation 'under the table' while the USA condemned his actions 'upon the table' as a Dictator. ::).
...wonder what the Prime Minister position does for the USA here?

I thought the whole point of democracy was that we could trust our government, army and police.

It's in places like China that civilian populations actually need guns. If gun-makers set up shop there, their sales would go through the roof.

How are we losing our rights? The whole "War on Terror" thing was an excuse for the government to exert more control over the people. But I think the so-called "Illuminati conspirators" overestimated the support they would get and failed.

The whole point of arming the police is so that the military don't have to get involved. People don't want to see soldiers in the cities. I think it's actually against the law for armed soldiers to set foot in cities without special permission from Parliament, the courts and the executive branch. Without special permission, an armed soldier that sets foot in a city becomes an enemy of state and possibly even a war criminal!!!

The reason why you don't have 'Soldiers' patroling,
is because, besides the Australian Law being set up like the USA's by default via the UK - besides fearing to be 'different' ...is because Politics needs 'total' control (control freaking' or power-mongering).

If soldiers patrolled the streets and started poppin these ouzi-pistol Gangstas, then the Police will feel a lessening of 'Power'. No more need for wannabe soldiers like SWAT and Special Task Forces of heavily armed Cops. ::)

I have no problem with Soldiers being hired by farmers to shoot vermin, patrol streets, rural areas, protecting animal species, taking responsibility for Hunting practices.
If they can't do that - what do they do these days besides fighting 'mercenary' for the UK/USA ?? :-?

Scenario: "You take the armed henchmen, I'll take the Drug Dealer" Said the Medic to the Soldiers before entering the House to do some 'damage' on behalf of society.
...the Cop had to wait outside.
