Title: Aboriginal racism surfaces again
Post by salad in on Feb 4th, 2012 at 4:49pm
What would happen if an all-white team was selected to play rugby league? I think there would be screams of 'racism' and 'racist'. How is it that a team can be selected based on the fact a player is an aboriginal?

Quote:
The 2012 Indigenous All Stars team is:
1. Ben Barba (Bulldogs; Goreng Goreng)
2. Jharal Yow Yeh (Broncos; Margany)
3. Greg Inglis (Rabbitohs; Dunghutti)
4. Justin Hodges (Broncos; Indigenous tribes of the Cairns region)
5. Nathan Merritt (Rabbitohs; Wiradjuri)
6. Johnathan Thurston (c) (Cowboys; Gungarri)
7. Chris Sandow (Eels; Bigambul/ Gubbi Gubbi)
8. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (Raiders; Indigenous tribes of Tweed area)
9. Travis Waddell (Raiders; Torres Strait: Badulaig)
10. George Rose (Sea Eagles; Kamilaroi)
11. Sam Thaiday (Broncos; Torres Strait: Iama (Yam Island)
12. Jamal Idris (Titans; Worimi)
13. Greg Bird (Titans; Kamilaroi)
Interchange:
14. Andrew Fifita (Sharks; Wiradjuri)
15. Cory Paterson (Cowboys; Indigenous tribes of the Blue Mountains region)
16. Matthew Bowen (Cowboys; Binthi and Dhaarrba)
17. Scott Prince (Titans; Kalkadoon)
18. Anthony Mitchell (Roosters; Waka Waka)
19. Joel Thompson (Raiders; Wiradjuri)
20. Nathan Peats (Rabbitohs; Biripi nation)
Coach: Laurie Daley (Wiradjuri)

Indigenous All Stars captain Johnathan Thurston  showcased the 2012 jersey that was designed by former player and Indigenous artist Sid Domic for the third year.

The jersey features a turtle shell, representing the people of the Torres Strait Island, boomerangs for the Australian Aboriginal people and a blue circle symbolising the Gold Coast.

The other major change to the jersey this year is the appearance of a Torres Strait Islander traditional “Dhari” head-dress, which Domic incorporated after requests from Torres Strait Islander All Stars fans.

Once again and hot on the heels of the overt display of racism by aboriginals just the other day we have another sad episode of aboriginals celebrating their racism.

What a sad day for Australia.

I am not sure but I think whitey is meant to be big enough to overlook anything like that...

and take it in the spirit of the game..

I mean if a white crowd had bashed on the windows of a group of Aboriginals celebrating a special day.... they would have been branded racists wouldnt they?

I dont really know what that words means anymore..anymore than the HERO word.. :( :(

Why do we have a Miss Black America but this is no Miss White America?

It appears that 'penny' is finally starting to drop.

It is the 'whites' in Australia who are being discriminated against. If you are any other colour than white you will get a Govt. handout somewhere along the line.

Unfortunately the people who really did build this country up get told there is nothing in the bucket for you. If you turn up as an illegal on the shores to our north you will be rewarded with a package racing towards $50K a year.

Our pensioners battle on their meagre income whilst interlopers lick the cream off the bowl. If I had an ounce of Aboriginal blood in me, I would be screaming it to the sky because I would be in 'hog heaven' financially for the rest of my life on the handouts available.

You should start a "Miss White La Jolla" - in honour of your Mother's fine heritage

But SERIOUSLY, folks, this is COMMON ( ... and UN endorsed) practice among minority demographics - as a means of preserving cultures

Who complains about the JEWISH OLYMPICS ( ... even though they hardly wear the "minority" tag)

Really?
White Afrikaners are the minority in South Africa - yet Afrikaner-only towns and teams are frowned upon by this same UN.

Hypocrisy anyone?

As a means of preserving cultures pfffft.  The very concept of a beauty pageant is a white thing, and they are judged by white standards.  How can non-whites imitating white culture be said to be preserving their own?

Indigenous children need positive role models because they generally face a tougher road than white Australian children. People like Thurston provide something to aspire to.

Why would you have a problem with that?

It's Miss South Sudan Australia - they're wearing western dress. If they were Muslim in Islamic dress, you'd be whining about their failure to adapt. Make up your mind.

And why is that do you think?

Title: Re: Aboriginal racism surfaces again
Post by Annie Anthrax on Feb 4th, 2012 at 9:42pm
Because they are more likely to live in poverty. 30% of Indigenous Australians live in remote (not rural) areas and their communities lack educational resources.

Literacy is an issue because English is often a second language (or third) and even then it's not regular English but Creole/Kriols.

Parents are often resentful or distrustful of being forced to send their children to schools that don't take their culture into consideration - understandable considering the White Australia policy wasn't that long ago.

There are also a lot of substance abuse in Indigenous communities - kids are exposed to it at a young age and often become dependent on alcohol (and other things) as a coping mechanism. A difficult cycle to break - particularly when you take into account the abuse and neglect that often comes from parents with addiction or mental health problems.

Indigenous Australian's need role models and this is about trying to promote sport as a means to provide that inspiration and support for our most disadvantaged Australian's.....Judging by the comments on this forum I think we need more support for indigenous Australian's as the lack of understanding shown by you people is proof that there is still a long way to go before Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders gain equal respect from Conservative white Australian's!!!

We as a society have spent billions just over the last couple of decades providing all sorts of stuff, when does it start to fall onto the recievers of this largess(wether owed or not) to start to contribute to their own future?

Stop trying to airbrush the overt racism on display on Saturday night on the Gold Coast. It was the most disgusting and vile display of racism this century.

There is nothing wrong with any of the role models you have mentioned.....However there is also nothing wrong with an Indigenous team providing inspiration for young Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders.....If you do not like it do not watch it....I think it is a positive initiative that allows young people to support something unique to them they can relate to.....Calling it racism is your choice if that is the way you see it!!!

I don't have any answers that I'm completely comfortable with. I agree that there needs to be some personal responsibility and accountability, but... it's hard.

Aborigines must stop thinking like hunter-gatherers. Otherwise all those millions and billions and Toyotas and houses we give them are just so much huntered and gathered loot - and salve only for our conscience.
Personal responsibility is the cultual divide. Aborigines must take it on our die myserably.  There is no future  in tribalism.

Their way of living is dead, no matter how much they drink or sniff to avoid facing it.

All racism comes from the political and corporate class, its just one of the golden calves they put out their to bind peoples minds into slavery.  A person who has truly invited themselves to become Sovereign Lord over their own minds will no longer be bound by these doctrines and traditions from the minds of mere men.  Once you have freed yourself from these lies of Government and Business, you can ascend to the heavens and be seated on the Throne as Lord and God of your own mind and no judgement of man or beast may defeat you. ::)

Some governments give us money
Some governments take our gold
some governments took our children

Some governments give us housing
Some governments give us cars
some governments give us a lot of stuff
we never asked them for.

No government ever gives us

Just give us back our sovereignty

Give us back our dignity
leave sacred sites alone

Why is it people still persist on banging on about racism and the like?

Seriously, people need to lighten up.

People are too quick to look for excuses or blame elsewhere for the own failures in life.

Promptly losing their jobs.

The New Stone Age
[From Chapter One of The Culture Cult]
Should American Indians and New Zealand Maoris and Australian Aborigines be urged to preserve their traditional cultures at all cost? Should they be told that assimilation is wrong? And is it wise to leave them entirely to their own devices?

The Australian example suggests that the answers are no, no, and no. The best chance of a good life for indigenes is much the same as for you and me—full fluency and literacy in English, as much math as we can handle, and a job. In the year 2000 artificially preserved indigenes are doomed.

Since the folly of locking native peoples up in their old-time cultures is plain, but it’s tasteless to say so, governments everywhere resort to the rhetoric of “reconciliation”. This pretends that the problem is psychological and moral: rejig the public mind, ask leading political figures to adopt a contrite demeanor and apologize for the sins of history, and all will be well. Underlying this is the assumption that we’re all on the same plain of social development, divided only by misunderstanding.

This is false. The division is deep—there’s a very Big Ditch between the tribal world and modernity. Until around 1970 governments in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand accepted this fact, and they saw their duty as helping indigenes to cross the Ditch. For that reason they concentrated on better health, education, and housing, and let the chips of traditional culture fall where they may.

That’s how western civilization dealt with its own traditions, creatively destroying those that would not change. Creative destruction is a law of historical advance.

But romantic primitivism swept progressive policies away. Planning for the future and looking forward was out. Looking backward became the only proper way to look. Transfixed by the Culture Cult, a hyperidealised vision of traditional life was adopted, and the effect on indigenes of romanticising their past has been devastating.

On the one hand they found themselves being used as pawns in political games played for high stakes. On the other hand they became the deluded victims of the extravagances of their admirers. If your traditional way of life has no alphabet, no writing, no books, and no libraries, and yet you are continually told that you have a culture which is “rich”, “complex”, and “sophisticated”, how can you realistically see your place in the scheme of things? If all such hyperbole were true, who would need books or writing? In Australia, policies inspired by the Culture Cult have brought the illiterization of thousands of Aborigines whose grandparents could read and write.

Forgive me, dear boy, but I really must disagree. We at the Faculty have been promoting indigenous isolationalism for years. We believe it is in the best interests of this charming tribal people to resist the language of the coloniser and occupy the farms and sheep stations for the purpose of hunting and gathering. We want them out of jobs in alienating cities and back to their lovely little lifestyles. Let's face it, these people have no need for books. Good heavens! They can't even hold a job down without going walkabout. They have smaller brains than you and I, you see. They are not a literary culture. It's not their fault, it's just the way they are. I don't know any personally, but I've read some marvellous works by a chap by the name of Roger Sandall. Have you read him? Really marvellous stuff.

I do recommend that you read the full book, old boy, and not just the link. This man understands it perfectly. These people deserve our pity and our help. What sort of society would we be if we didn't help these lower races better themselves?

It's this kind of fookin gibberish that reprimitivises them.
There is no goddam dreamtime and rainbow serpent at the bottom of that petrol can, or even on iPad. The Stone Age is over.

Is it? Good heavens - I'll have to organise a Faculty meeting. Some of the other members will be most disappointed.

I've always thought things like this.

Why do we have a Miss Black America but this is no Miss White America?

You should start a "Miss White La Jolla" - in honour of your Mother's fine heritage

But SERIOUSLY, folks, this is COMMON ( ... and UN endorsed) practice among minority demographics - as a means of preserving cultures

Who complains about the JEWISH OLYMPICS ( ... even though they hardly wear the "minority" tag)

As a means of preserving cultures pfffft.  The very concept of a beauty pageant is a white thing, and they are judged by white standards.  How can non-whites imitating white culture be said to be preserving their own?

The ladies of miss south sudan australia in their supposed "cultural" dress.

It's Miss South Sudan Australia - they're wearing western dress. If they were Muslim in Islamic dress, you'd be whining about their failure to adapt. Make up your mind.

I think I would like to see that Annie.
All the Islamic contestants lined up in their black beekeepers outfit on. ;D
