Title: Why should politicians get a massive pension? Post by john_g on Feb 4th, 2012 at 2:21pm
After they're retired? How do they deserve this? How are they any longer of any benefit and/or service to the Autralian people? Yet they get our hard-earned tax payer money to do what exactly?

Its the reason we only have self serving idiots doing the job now. Pay them like we do our top CEOs, get rid of taxpayer funded super and we will quickly see the idiots in both the Labor and Coalition parties weeded out. We deserve better than Abbott and Gillard..the villiage idiots. |

I agree with Adel. I gave the example some time ago where you had my boss meeting Kim Carr in my last job in Melbourne. Carr was Minister of Innovation and Technology and would have been on what? $200k? My boss - who was merely a VP of R&D - was on $400k base + 50 to 75% bonus. So 3 times what Carr was on. There, in a nutshell, is the difference between public and private. If you pay market rate we may end up with much better MPs and leaders. We must get rid of the rorting though. |

Just paying big money does not necessarily attract better people, just look at the CEO's whose companies lost millions, yet they still get fat bonuses. This excerpt from Allan Marshall say's it all. In the book “Unemployment forever or a Support Income System and Work For All”, by Allan McDonald, on page 142 (h) it is stated: Any means tested welfare system requires extensive and complex state control and regulation. Australia is slowly but surely moving towards the ultimate outcome of a means tested social welfare system-state control over finances, the savings, and the labours of the poorest in the community. Have the politicians of Australia the know-how and will to change the tax and social system to be more egalitarian, or was the late Professor A.J.Marshall right when he wrote, as quoted in the book “Equality and Authority” by S Encel on page212: “Most Australian politicians, he wrote, aspire to parliamentary seats ‘to better their salary, to inflate their egos and feather their nests’. |

On an 80/20 rule yes it does. Sure you have mistakes but the more you pay the better chance you have of attracting good people. I have moved several times in my career purely for more money - uprooting 3 times to different countries in the process. It's what market capitalism and the global economy is all about. Chasing the dollar. |

Unions say CEOs should have their pay capped, to that of 10 times the average full time workers wage. Unfortunately to many CEOs get paid that of a division one lottery win. Disgraceful. :(

Interesting is it not?. These overpaid CEOs turn around and sack people, making them become unemployed. Of course if anything does go wrong, the CEO, usually walks away, with a suitcase full of money. :(

Why not ask some of the workers in the banks what their problem is?. The ones that are about to be made redundant, through no fault of their own. :(

The solution is to do everything you can not to be an average hack in a dead end job.

Globalisation and market capitalism mate. Swings and roundabouts. You'll find a lot of those who will be made redundant will also contract. I know a guy in London made redundant, pocketed 100k in a package and then contracted (at the place that made him redundant) on 1.5 times his hourly rate. It's swings and roundabouts. For banks contractors dont appear in the headcount profitability metrics. Therefore you can have more people but less on the balance sheet from an entitlements point of view. It's accounting magic. ;) |

In the longer term, Capitalism will go the way of all the other ism's! And, in the longer term, but not too far away, the dollar (the US$), will disappear up it's own ass! |

I agree with most comments, but no one has actually answered the question - WHY. Why should booted-out/retired MPs get a cent of our money, when they are no longer of any service to us?

I agree and I can see no reason why they should get huge taxpayer funded pensions. |
