Authorities are working to find a permanent home for two boys whose father has been charged with the murder of their mother.

Police have said Nasir Ahmadi, 46, who reported his wife missing a month ago, has made admissions about the murder of Zahara Rahimzadegan on December 16 in Ashwood. Both arrived in Australia as refugees from Iran in 1999.

They were active in their local church and worked with newly arrived migrants.

Ahmadi is in jail after being arrested by homicide detectives, who later discovered a decomposed body in the tiny rear yard of the family's Ashwood home, under a recently built patio.

Church leaders, shocked at an arrest and murder within their community, believe a new, permanent home will be found for the children, aged 11 and 15. The boys are receiving counselling.

The Reverend Robert Carner, who spoke with Ahmadi days before he was charged on Friday, said the children needed to be placed in a good home as soon as possible.

"They are in good care, at the moment, with people who really care about them," he said after Ahmadi faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court for a filing hearing yesterday.

"They are both good kids and they are just trying to stabilise them.

"There are a couple of places that would love to have them," he told The Age.

Ahmadi, who has never been in custody before, clasped his hands in front of him, scanning the courtroom during his brief appearance.

He was remanded to face the same court on May 21.

The murder charge came after detectives dug up the backyard of the couple's unit on Friday and discovered decomposing human remains.

State Emergency Service crews also scanned adjacent creeks and woodlands around the property

Melbourne Detectives are continuing the search for a missing Iranian refugee Mandy Ahmadi, 46, who disappeared from her home last month. The former Muslim converted to Christianity 5-years ago and police say allegations of religious reprisals will be investigated.*

Man charged after discovery of wife's remains

A 46-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his wife after the discovery of human remains at his Ashwood home, in Melbourne's south-east, on Friday afternoon.

Police have told an out of sessions court hearing that Nasir Ahmadi has admitted killing his wife, Zahara Rahimzadegan, 46.

Homicide detectives spent yesterday searching the High Street property and forensic testing has begun on human remains discovered late yesterday afternoon.

Detectives found the remains in a grave which was covered with concrete under a new deck behind the house.

Ms Rahimzadegan disappeared on December 16 and was reported missing by her husband.

Ahmadi will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
