I just watched "Iron Lady" at the cinema. I thought Meryl Streep played Maggie absolutely down pat. Although i disagreed with some of her policies (breaking the coal miners, poll tax) Maggie really held on against huge male opposition. Meryl Streep's performance of her as PM during the Falklands war was outstanding - and I belive most probably pretty accurate
A good movie - and thankfully one the kids, teens and gen X and Y will have no interest in - just us old fogies! |

That's one movie that that I'd like to see.
Do they have a scene showing her balls? Thatcher must be one of the most disgusting, repulsive and reprehensible females ever created ;D |

Wild Target is a cracker, especially if you watch it with a couple of pre-teen boys, while mum is away.
I recommend Dean Spanley. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d91Ol7rui4 |

Have any of you seen Keeping Mum? Not so good for pre teenage boys, but a nice film to watch with your partner.
The Song of Solomon scene makes the movie for me - if you haven't seen it, it's about a husband rediscovering his passion for his wife. Rowan Atkinson's reading of the passage is beautiful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kKHKKkA1rQ |

I haven't been to see anything at a cinema for some time now, but I would like to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie. The Artist sounds interesting too.
As for DVDs, as the ones I've bought recently have all been of TV shows (almost all of Poirot, the Jeremy Brett series of Sherlock Holmes and the complete series of Inspector Morse), it's a while since I've watched any movies on DVD too. The last movie I watched on TV was Legally Blonde, last night. |

Why you little................. Modern movies are great if you want a slick, but bland and soulless yawnfest, designed to win snooty awards rather than entertain the viewer. Much like music, movies have been on a downward spiral since the 80's. |

Is it just me or has the USA lost its 'Movie Magic'?
Hardly ever do you see a movie about everyday America. Hardly ever do you see a movie about America that has a good 'original' story to it. Instead, it is fictional - far-fetched, Sci-Fi, Marvel SuperHeroes, Old English Historical, plagerised Foreign Films, Computer 'childrens' animation (always the same plot) or a sequel of something long ago. Oh surprise - they're making another Ferris Bueller Movie - how original! Me thinks the Movie Industry would be better off moving to Cental America and call itself "Silverado" rather than Hollywood. America has lost its movie imagination and originality. ...they even didn't like LOTR (NZ) because it didn't have a token black man and had blonde - Aryan elves instead. |

Title: Re: Movies you have seen lately Post by red baron on Feb 15th, 2012 at 2:49pm
J.Edgar is a great movie that Director Clint Eastwood never loses the thread of truth in.
Leonardo De Caprio gives a stellar performance as the Director of the F.B.I. Edgar Hoover. It is a portrait of power and the corruption of that power, even though Hoover starts out with lusty ideals. Ultimately he is no better than the criminals he seeks out, his power is a twisted and bitter thing used against citizens and Presidents alike. The saying 'Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely', has never been illustrated more concisely. |

Honky Tonk Man - I think Liam Neeson runs into Bear Grylls who shows him how to jump over mountains in a single bound. I saw 'The Grey' trailer at the cinema. Got to admit, I'm going.
Neeson's career has had a sudden revival vby the excellent Taken. It too $400 million world wide. There are cricket tragics and there are cinema tragics, I'm afraid I am in the latter category...although I am a notoriously hard marker. |

We didn't get home until after 8pm. Somehow I think that the first one was a slightly better film, but I enjoyed them both. One thing that bothers me though: did they use terms like "ponce" and "stag party" in Victorian times? |

The last movie which I've watched was Hugo Cabret and I was really impressed. I loved the fact that this movie didn't need much words! The focus was on the pictures and this made it excellent. I also liked the whole scenery- France around 1900 is so beautiful and I really appreciate looking at the whole station with the clocks and the market!

Saw it today at the Dendy Opera Quays and loved it. The two actors inn the leading roles were really good, and so were James Cromwell and John Goodman (never thought I would say that about Goodman - up until now I've never liked anything I have seen him in). The way the film was made reminded me a bit of some of Chaplin's films of the early sound era - particularly "City Lights". |

Annie, go see 'The Marigold movie' great script, great acting from, Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and your favourite Bill Nighy. Also in it was Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionares, great acting from him as well.
What a delightful movie full of life and colour about a bunch old fogies going to India to live 'in retirement' at the Marigold Hotel. It was a cut above most of the movies I have seen this year and I have seen most of them. It was anything but depressing, funny, ironic, wise, it ran the whole gammut of human emotions. |

Title: Re: Movies you have seen lately Post by red baron on Mar 28th, 2012 at 7:12pm
Tell you a little life story, in the 80's I completed an external diploma in script writing with the Australian Film Radio and Television School.
I had written a mini series called 'The Old Boys' It was based a lot on my early years experiences at Annandale, which was a tough town in thopse days, we lived next door to an S.P. Bookmaker who used to bounce his wife off the walls if he had a bad day. The rest came from what I learned in the Cops. It was about 3 mates, one went on to be a big business success, the second a cricketer who played for Australia and the third a criminal. Channel 7 optioned my work and even sent a script editor to work on it. I picked up about 15K for the option. Channel 7's Louise Home took me out to Moroney's, one of the best restaurants in Sydney at the time. I thought my time had come but Channel7 and the other stations changed direction and The Old Boys was not made. Stiff cheddar for me. I tried to climb the Mountain again and in fact wrote another mini series called, The Eastern Suburbs Barbecue Club. It was rejected by a major player (Can't say because of libel laws) but in any case, out came a mini series a couple of years later based around the Roger Rogerson and the Neddy Arthur Smiths of the day. Strangely...very much like my script...funny about that huh? By the same company I had submitted it to as well. Tell you one thing, there are more thieves in TV land that I ever met in the cops! Just a slice of life care of yours truly. |

I loved it. Beautifully acted and wonderful colours. It had a lot more to say about relationships between people than I was expecting, which is not to say that it didn't have a good story, because it did, but after the movie was finished, more than anything else, I found myself thinking about the characters, the situations they found themselves in, and how would I have reacted if it were me. Another thing I liked about it was that it wasn't predictable - you didn't know what was going to happen to the characters, and you didn't know how it was all going to end up. With most movies you canguess how they're going to finish, you just don't know exactly how they're going to get there. It may not be a movie that would appeal to a lot of people under 30 though I suspect - and I would hazard a guess that the average age of the audience last night would have been around the 50 mark..... |

Another film I enjoyed is the Norwegian horror "Død snø" ("Dead Snow").
The film is in Norwegian with English subtitles. A group of seven students on Easter vacation (so now is a perfect time to watch it) arrives at a small cabin in the snowy mountains near Øksfjord. The group begins to drink and party until a mysterious hiker (Bjørn Sundquist) arrives. He tells them the dark history of the region; during World War II, a force of Einsatzgruppe, led by Standartenführer Herzog (Ørjan Gamst), occupied the area. For three years the Nazis abused and tortured the local people. Near the end of the war, with Germany's defeat looming, the soldiers looted all the town's valuables. However, the citizens stage an uprising and ambushed the Nazis, killing many. The survivors, including Herzog, were chased into the mountains, and it was assumed that they all froze to death. The hiker then continues on his way. Needless to say the group soon become the bloody victims of a gang of zombie Nazis...... |

I suppose I will rock the boat with this but HUNGER GAMES left me hungry for a decent movie. After the hyperbole I went to see it but was very let down.
I thought Hunger Games was a 'linear' movie which travelled along a well worn road. You could predict the end after twenty minutes in. I went looking for something special but all I found was a teenage slice and dice movie. It had nothing to say. AS William Goldman the screenwriter who wrote such classic as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Princess Bride said, "in a movie you have one thing that you don't have on television - time. The fans have paid their money and they will sit patiently for the first twenty minutes whilst you set up your characters and your plot." The Hunger Games had time but by the end of the movie we didn't have a clue about the cataclysmic revolution what caused it, who was involved and what was their world was like before it. This movie was flat and boring and I rate it 4 out of 10. |

Title: Re: Movies you have seen lately Post by Cofgod on Apr 14th, 2012 at 9:53pm
I saw Four Lions last night. It was hilarious. British comedy at its best. I think it was just poking fun at Islamists and how thick and hapless they can be.
The best bit is where one of the would-be Islamists accidentally blows himself up in a field full of sheep, taking a sheep with him, and one of his "brothers", when he discovers that the guy's remains and the sheep's remains were intermingled and so were scooped up together into the same bag, called the victim a jalfrezi. I don't know if anybody here has ever seen the British comedy series Fonejacker about a guy who makes hilarious prank phonecalls to unsuspecting people and the sequel to that series, Facejacker, in which a man in various disguises plays pranks on people, but the star of those shows, Kayvan Novak, plays one of the Islamists in the film Four Lions. |
