CMEs TARGET EARTH, MARS: The odds of a geomagnetic storm on Dec. 28th are improving with the launch of two CMEs toward Earth in less than 24 hours. NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft photographed this one on Dec. 26th: According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the cloud should squarely strike Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 28th at 20:22 UT (+/- 7 hours). Another CME could deliver a glancing blow a few hours earlier on the same date. The double impact is expected to spark mild-to-moderate geomagnetic storms at high latitudes. Aurora alerts: text, voice. Mars is also in the line of fire. The first of the two CMEs is squarely directed toward the Red Planet--estimated time of arrival: Dec. 30th at 1800 UT. Using onboard radiation sensors, NASA's Curiosity rover might be able to sense the CME when it passes the rover's spacecraft en route to Mars. M7.9 Solar Flare & HALO CME / Solar Watch March 14, 2012 A strong M 7.9 Solar Flare was recorded from solar Active Region 11429 earlier today. A Halo CME was produced shortly after, and is expected to deliver a glancing blow to earths magnetic field sometime March 16th. Associated with this event were a R2 Radio Blackout and a Type II Radio Emission with a velocity of 1366 km/s was monitored. And a significant proton event is now in progress. |

A MAGNITUDE 6.1 earthquake, the biggest in the country for 15 years, has rattled Far North South Australia. The earthquake's epicentre was recorded at shallow depth near Ernabella, 415km north west of Coober Pedy and about 320km south west of Alice Springs, just before 8pm. Geoscience Australia reported the quake could have been felt by people up to 500km away and damage experienced within a 40km radius of the epicentre. Geoscience Australia seismologist David Jepsen said the quake was the biggest in Australia in 15 years. "There are a number of Aboriginal communities near the epicentre and they would have felt the earthquake strongly," he said. "It is possible there could be some minor damage up there. One of these in a major city would be a different story. "People as far north as Alice Springs and as far south as Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta could have felt this." An SA Police spokesman said there had been no reports of damage or injuries. Dr Jepsen said a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the same location about a week ago. The earthquake was the most powerful in Australia since a 6.3 magnitude quake off Collier Bay, on Western Australia's north coast, on August 10, 1997. It is the second largest quake to be recorded in South Australia. The biggest was a 6.5 magnitude jolt near Beachport in the South East in 1897, which caused chaos at the nearby town of Kingston and was felt in Adelaide. A magnitude 3.3 quake rumbled through Adelaide on October 19 last year. |

Lamongan is under water to this level and is nowhere near the Solo River or any other river. This is sinking. Lamongan, also, is close to the 80 foot level mentioned by the Zetas for Java. Lamongan is 28 meters (84 feet) above sea level. Lamongan has been in the news since February 20, 2011 for flooding, and this has not subsided! Flooding in Greski, which is on the coastline there, has been reported since March 13, 2011. That this region of Java has been sinking has never been officially admitted. But questions kept arising from those who complained they were not able to determine their future Lat/Long effectively. Your future map and other discussions mention the new N Pole off the eastern tip of Brazil, but this map made into a globe: shows that it would be highly misleading to characterize the new N Pole as anywhere near Brazil, because it is shown as west of the present southern tip of Africa. Would it be too much trouble to give the present longitude and latitude of what will be the future N Pole? Would the Zetas mind giving the present latitude and longitude of the future N Pole? So the new Lat/Long of the poles was given: ZetaTalk Answer 7/17/2010: Under our direction Nancy has ascertained via Google Earth that the new N Pole will be at the current lat/long of 5°S and 29°W and the new S Pole will be the current lat/long of 10°N and 78°E. These points are not on opposites of the globe from one another today. The Pacific compresses, the Atlantic widens, the S America Plate crunches through much of what is now the Caribbean Plate, and all this and more reform the globe somewhat so that geographical points are not relative to other geographical points as they are today. But confusion still ran rampant. In their response to this confusion, the Zetas stated that it was not for lack of explanation on their part, but that the shock of a new globe was too much, and the complainants were thus refusing to visualize the new globe, even when it was in front of them. Billions of planets in the Milky Way could be habitable, estimate claims THERE are likely tens of billions of planets circling red dwarfs in our galaxy that may have the right conditions for sustaining life, according to a new estimate. The finding, announced by European astronomers today, adds to the growing body of evidence that so-called super-Earths are ubiquitous in habitable zones of the cosmos. Faint and cool compared to the Sun, red dwarfs account for 80 per cent of all the stars in the Milky Way. Using a planet-hunting instrument called the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) in Chile, astronomers found other worlds orbiting two out of five of such stars. "Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40 per cent of all red dwarf stars have a super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet," Xavier Bonfils, the leader of the European Southern Observatory team, said. "Because red dwarfs are so common - there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way - this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone," he added. Zachory Berta, a researcher with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who was not involved in the study, said the new finding agrees with recent observations from NASA's Kepler telescope, which has been detecting an increasing number of small planets around small stars. "What makes me most excited about this result is what it means for our chances of detecting life on a planet other than Earth orbiting a star other than the Sun," Berta said in an email. "The more habitable planets we find around nearby red dwarfs, the better our odds for truly being able to detect life on another world in our galaxy," he added. But researchers involved in the study cautioned that red dwarfs themselves could create hostile conditions for the planets that orbit them. "The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the Sun," Stephane Udry, a member of the European team. "But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely." |

They performed several hundred thousand simulations until they found out what process had created the black hole and its binary partner, both located in a galaxy some 3 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum. Four million years previously, the team reports online today in Nature, the black hole's progenitor was actually the more massive of the two, tipping the scales at 97 solar masses. But the big star fused its hydrogen and helium into heavier elements with lightning speed, expelling gigantic solar winds. The companion star lapped up gobs of that expelled material, growing quickly to its current size. SPRITE SEASON BEGINS: The first sprites of summer are starting to appear in the skies of North America. The strange thing is, summer is almost three months away. "Sprite season is beginning early this year," says Thomas Ashcraft, who photographed these specimens last night from his observatory in New Mexico: "At precisely two minutes and twenty-six seconds after midnight March 30, 2012 there was an incredibly powerful bolt of lightning in the vicinity of Woodward, Oklahoma that spawned these red sprites," says Ashcraft. "I could see them from two states away!" He also recorded VLF and shortwave radio emissions from the cluster, which you can hear as the soundtrack to this video. Sprites are electrical discharges that come out of the top of thunderclouds, opposite ordinary lightning bolts which plunge toward Earth. Sprites can tower as high as 90 km above ground. That makes them a form of space weather as they overlap the zone of auroras, meteors, and noctilucent clouds. Because they are associated with lightning, sprites are most often seen in summer months, "but in the past few days sprites have been reported in Texas (particularly near the Mexican border) as well as here in New Mexico," notes Ashcraft. It is the teachings of distortion that are keeping self from SELF, to dissolve you must first of all be able to see them and then be able to dissolve. The key to dissolving is FAITH and TRUST in SELF. For YOU came here to this planet in this human form KNOWING this was the challenge. YOU did not leave you in the dark, you left YOU in plain sight, that which is stopping you from YOU are merely the scripts and teachings of distortion that YOU KNEW would be on this planet prior to your incarnation. YOU left the signposts in the forms of people, places and events within this human life experience in order for YOU to remember. We ask all who are beginning to remember to step forward. If you resonate with our words, with our guidance then we are the signpost that you need at this time. If you do not resonate then it is not this moment, another signpost will reveal itself to YOU. Earth's Magnetic Fields May Be Causing Bird and Fish Die-Off By Donna Pravel Jan 5, 2011 The Earth's Magnetic Fields May Cause Die-Off Could the Earth's magnetic fields be causing the recent die-off of thousands of birds and fish? Scientists believe so, along with environmental imbalances. The sudden death of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas over the 2010-2011 New Year's holiday last weekend was newsworthy enough. Within a couple of days, hundreds of stories from all around the globe recounted similar phenomena. Not only have blackbirds been "falling out of the sky," but many species of birds,as well as reported cases of bat deaths in Arizona. In addition, there are numerous reports being gathered from around the world about massive fish die-off, and die-off of many different sea animals. What could be causing these deaths? Some researchers believe that changes in the Earth's magnetic fields are to blame. The Earth's Magnetic Fields: What They Are and How Birds Use Them to Migrate The Earth's magnetic field is similar to that of a bar magnet, with north and south poles.The magnetic field causes a bubble around the Earth which protects it from solar winds, asteroids, and other objects in space. Scientists believe the magnetic poles are due to electric currents that come from the Earth's core.The circulating electric current creates a dynamo effect, which is caused, in part, by the rotation of the Earth's axis. A dynamo effect is similar to what happens with an electric generator. When the magnetic field interacts with particles from solar winds, it creates what is known as the aurora borealis near the poles. Scientists at Goethe-Universitat in Frankfurt, Germany, have discovered that a bird can see the Earth's magnetic fields through photoreceptor cells in the bird's right eye. Birds use this navigational tool to migrate north and south during the autumn and spring. Before this discovery, it was believed that birds could sense the magnetic field either through their eyes or beaks. These photoreceptor cells create shades of light, which tell the birds if they are on or off course during migration. Could the Earth's Magnetic Fields Be Causing the Die-Off of Thousands of Birds? The Goethe-Universitat study revealed that if birds could not see the magnetic field when migrating, they lost their "bearings" and could hurt themselves or even die. NASA reported in 2008 that there was a "massive breach" in the Earth's magnetic field, detected by THEMIS spacecraft. Solar wind can flow through this breach, causing enormous geomagnetic storms. It is very possible that such a geomagnetic storm is responsible for the current deaths of thousands of birds across the planet. Magnetic storms can cause many different phenomena to occur. Not only do birds, such as the reported blackbirds, pelicans, penguins and eagles, lose their bearings and fall dead from exhaustion and hunger, but radio transmissions can be lost, there can be radiation from too much solar power, and high-energy charged particles can bombard the Earth due to the breach in the magnetic "shield" wrapping the planet.. Magnetic storms can also trigger changes in the Earth's crust, which may lead to increases in landslides, mudslides, earthquakes, and volcano eruptions. What About the Fish Kills? Are the Fish and Bird Die-Offs Related? It may be possible that the fish and bird die-offs are unrelated. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission spokesman Keith Stephens believes that in the drum fish case, it could just be a disease, "since it only affected one species." He says fishkills are not unusual. However, fishkills are being reported all across the world. Panama reports at least 100 tons of several species of fish found dead all along its coast. Officials there suspect an environmental imbalance, possibly due to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Italy claims a "massacre" of fish, clams, and crabs over Christmas, but blame nearby industries. Similar fishkills are being reported in other cities. According to Science Daily.com, sea creatures such as sharks, crabs, salmon, and sea turtles not only use magnetic fields to navigate, but also to detect their prey. So it is entirely possible that some of the recent deaths of not only fish, but sea animals like starfish and dolphins are due to changes in the Earth's magnetic fields. Strong earthquake shakes Mexico City, causing tall buildings to sway, people to evacuate MEXICO CITY — A strong earthquake struck a sparsely populated area in the mountains of western Mexico on Wednesday, and caused tall buildings to sway more than 200 miles away in Mexico City. People evacuated some buildings in the capital, but the city government said there were no victims or signs of major damage. Authorities in Michoacan state, where the tremor was centered, also had no reports of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a preliminary reading of 7.0 magnitude for the quake, but later downgraded it to 6.5. A quake of that magnitude is capable of producing severe damage in an urban area, but this one occurred about 41 miles (65.6 kilometers) below the surface and a tremor’s power to cause damage is often dissipated when it is so deep. The USGS said the tremor was centered in Michoacan state 238 miles (384 kilometers) west-southwest of Mexico City and 88 miles (143 kilometers) northwest of the Pacific resort of Zihuantanejo. Manuel Ortiz Rosete, the Michoacan state civil protection director, said no damage had been reported in major cities and coastal communities of the state. Maria Luna Garcia, a resident of the town of Arteaga, said she and her children became very scared when the quake hit less than 30 miles away. “I went out to the streets with my three children, one of them in my arms, just to be safe,” she said. “Fortunately, nothing happened.” Wednesday’s tremor was the latest in a series of strong shakes to hit Mexico City since a powerful 7.4-magnitude quake hit southern Mexico three weeks ago. But this was not an aftershock of that one, USGS geophysicist Dale Grant said. “It’s a different earthquake. We are calling it an individual earthquake,” Grant said. “There’s a potential for aftershocks.” Last month’s big earthquake was felt strongly in the nation’s capital, and it damaged hundreds of homes and killed at least two people near the border between Guerrero and Oaxaca states. Mexico’s seismological service said that quake has been followed by close to 400 aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.0. A quake alert application for Blackberrys that Mexico City’s government touted last week did not work Tuesday. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said the alert system has been working for quakes centered in two southern states and will begin to work for any tremors in Michoacan in the next few days. |

4/11/2012 -- FIVE or SIX LARGE EARTHQUAKES TODAY -- 8.9M, 8.7M, 8.2M, 7.0M, and two 6.0M Today, April 11 2012 , earthquakes take front and center again... POSSIBLY THREE 8.0 magnitude + earthquakes in Sumatra ... 8.9M , 8.7M, 8.2M, plus a 6.0M. We also saw a 7.0M occur off the west coast of Mexico (now downgraded to a 6.5)...... we ALSO saw a 6.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Oregon (in the fresh lava fields out to sea). High latitude magnetic fields have been observed with solar telescopes on the ground. However, actual process of the polar field reversal is poorly understood because of the difficulty of the observations on the extreme limb combined with atmospheric seeing effect. The international research team led by Saku Tsuneta, a professor at NAOJ, has been performing the monthly polar observations with Hinode from September 2008. We here report the discovery that the average magnetic flux of the north polar region is rapidly and steadily decreasing during the period of 2008 and 2012 (Figure B). The reversal (from minus to plus polarity) is taking place in sequence from lower latitude to higher latitude. The average magnetic flux of the polar region soon becomes zero. The estimated completion of the reversal of the north polar region will take place in 1 months or so, about one year earlier than the nominal expected reversal time. In striking contrast to the north polar situation, the magnetic flux of the south polar region has been very stable, and maintains the plus polarity (Figure C). These latest Hinode observations suggest that the global magnetic field of the Sun will become different from the normal bipolar configuration. Observations of the polar magnetic fields are the key for understanding the cyclic solar dynamo. A loud boom or boomS (or perhaps just one boom and some echoes) were heard and rumbling felt by several people around the area of Washoe County, NV at approximately 8:00 A.M. (7:50 by most witness reports) on April 22, 2012. No earthquakes were reported by USGS for that location and time. Media says that scientists are going with the "meteor" explanation. A meteor was indeed seen around the same time, but its fishy as to whether or not it is truly related to the persistent rumbling, which we hear an officer make mention of in this scanner audio. The path of annularity, where the sun will appear to be a "ring of fire," stretches from China and Japan to the middle of North America: An animated eclipse map prepared by Larry Koehn of ShadowandSubstance.com shows the best times to look. In the United States, the eclipse begins at 5:30 pm PDT and lasts for two hours. Around 6:30 pm PDT, the afternoon sun will become a luminous ring in places such as Medford, Oregon; Chico, California; Reno, Nevada; St. George, Utah; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas. Outside the narrow center line, the eclipse will be partial. Observers almost everywhere west of the Mississippi will see a crescent-shaped sun as the Moon passes by off-center. Because this is not a total eclipse, some portion of the sun will always be exposed. To prevent eye damage, use eclipse glasses, a safely-filtered telescope, or a solar projector to observe the eclipse. You can make a handy solar projector by criss-crossing your fingers waffle-style. Rays of light beaming through the gaps will have the same shape as the eclipsed sun. Or look on the ground beneath leafy trees for crescent-shaped sunbeams and rings of light. |

on USGS 2-3 days ago..it was all over the news.. no record at all 5+ magnitude so not all earthquakes are being reported from this USGS site.. fear not namaste -:) |

Plain English Translation: "Bren-ton" was so wrong that not only did his prediction fail, but he even screwed up the name of the tectonic plate he predicted would have "major geological event", which puts him solidly in the lead for being the Wrongest Entity in the History of Wrong Entities. Also, I'm completely clueless about the field of seismology and think a magnitude 5.0 quake constitutes a "major geological event" in any reasonable or generally accepted scientific usage of the term. Please excuse "Bren-ton's" failure as a prognosticator and bear in mind that the crew of the "Athabantian" are simple folk who know nothing of science and mathematics. By way of apology I offer meaningless platitudes and hope the evil American won't poke fun at me for my hokey pseudo-scientific new age religious nonsense.

The epicentre of the quake was close to Modena, a city of 170,000. Many local people were already living in temporary shelter following a 6.0-magnitude quake May 20 that killed seven people and injured 50. Hundreds were feared injured, and as many as 6000 people would require emergency shelter, authorities said. A strong aftershock measuring 5.6 magnitude hit the area at 12.55pm local time, the USGS said. The quake, at a depth of 6.2 miles (9.9km), shook for nearly 30 seconds, the ANSA news agency reported. At least 10 people were killed in the first quake, which struck at around 9am local time, Sky Italia's TG24 reported. Among the fatalities, three people were killed when buildings collapsed in San Felice sul Panaro, near Modena, the Gazzetta di Modena newspaper reported. The mayor of the town, Alberto Silvestri, told Sky Italia's TG24 that he feared the toll could rise. "Unfortunately, there are victims. There are people under the rubble. I cannot tell you anything more. The situation is very serious," he said. In nearby Mirandola, three workers were killed at an industrial building when it collapsed. A rescue operation was underway. Two priests were reported killed, in Carpi and Rovereto, although authorities would not confirm that both deaths were directly related to the earthquake. "A new quake has hit the Emilia Romagna region, leaving victims, wounded people and damaged buildings in its wake," Prime Minister Mario Monti said in a televised address. "I send the government's condolences to the families of the victims and call on all citizens to have faith. I'm sure we'll get over this moment." A number of ancient buildings collapsed in Modena, including churches. There were reports of flattened buildings in several locations near the epicentre. Today's earthquakes were felt across northern Italy, and a number of buildings were evacuated in the country's second city, Milan, TG24 reported. |

Gamma Rays from March X-Flare Detected By Fermi Published on Jun 12, 2012 by SolarWatcher During a powerful solar blast in March, NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected the highest-energy light ever associated with an eruption on the sun. The discovery heralds Fermi's new role as a solar observatory, a powerful new tool for understanding solar outbursts during the sun's maximum period of activity. "For most of Fermi's four years in orbit, its Large Area Telescope (LAT) saw the sun as a faint, steady gamma-ray source thanks to the impacts of high-speed particles called cosmic rays," said Nicola Omodei, an astrophysicist at Stanford University in California. "Now we're beginning to see what the sun itself can do." A solar flare is an explosive blast of light and charged particles. The powerful March 7 flare, which earned a classification of X5.4 based on the peak intensity of its X-rays, is the strongest eruption so far observed by Fermi's LAT. The flare produced such an outpouring of gamma rays -- a form of light with even greater energy than X-rays -- that the sun briefly became the brightest object in the gamma-ray sky. At the flare's peak, the LAT detected gamma rays with two billion times the energy of visible light, or about 4 billion electron volts (GeV), easily setting a record for the highest-energy light ever detected during or just after a solar flare. The flux of high-energy gamma rays, defined as those with energies beyond 100 million electron volts (MeV), was 1,000 times greater than the sun's steady output. The March 7 flare also is notable for the persistence of its gamma-ray emission. Fermi's LAT detected high-energy gamma rays for about 20 hours, two and a half times longer than any event on record. Additionally, the event marks the first time a greater-than-100-MeV gamma-ray source has been localized to the sun's disk, thanks to the LAT's keen angular resolution. Flares and other eruptive solar events produce gamma rays by accelerating charged particles, which then collide with matter in the sun's atmosphere and visible surface. For instance, interactions among protons result in short-lived subatomic particles called pions, which produce high-energy gamma rays when they decay. Nuclei excited by collisions with lower-energy ions give off characteristic gamma rays as they settle down. Accelerated electrons emit gamma rays as they collide with protons and atomic nuclei. 80,000 Earthquakes A Month: What's Shaking The Planet? Sun Jul 08 2012 12:16 Next time someone asks you what's shaking, just answer the Earth. You won't be wrong. Every month the earth is shaken by approximately 80,000 earthquakes; in fact, at a rate of 2 earthquakes a minute, there is an earthquake taking place somewhere while you read this article. However, thankfully many of these go undetected because they hit remote areas or have such small magnitudes that they are practically imperceptible. Now new European research, headed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, is investigating these subtle seismic rumblings, in the hope that they will give us clues about the behaviour of all types of earthquakes, including the more destructive earthquakes that occur at shallower depths. The rumblings being investigated belong to the tectonic tremor, a less hazardous form of seismic activity that occurs far deeper into the earth's core than the devastating earthquakes that occur much closer to the earth's surface. One major difference between tectonic tremor and earthquakes is that tectonic tremor causes relatively weak ground shaking and is not cause for immediate concern. 'Both earthquakes and tremor have the same cause. They result from the relative movement on fault surfaces, a result of the motion of the tectonic plates,' explains seismologist Dr Rebecca Harrington, who heads a research group at KIT. 'While earthquakes at our research site in California typically occur at depths of up to 15 km below the surface, tectonic tremor signals are generated at depths ranging from approximately 15 to 35 km.' We know little about tectonic tremor because they were only discovered about a decade ago. This knowledge gap prompted KIT researchers to collect tectonic tremor seismic data in California, which is now being evaluated in order to better understand this relatively new seismic phenomenon. Credit: NASA, DTAM project team/Wikipedia While seismologists admit that we are still a long way from being able to predict earthquakes, we have however improved our ability to estimate the danger posed by earthquakes by understanding what happens on a fault during a seismic event. According to Dr Harrington, research of tectonic tremor may play an important role in understanding fault behaviour: 'We understand very little about what happens on a fault when it ruptures. The tectonic tremor generated on the deep part of a fault may provide clues about the behaviour on the more shallow parts of a fault where more damaging earthquakes occur.' California is an excellent place to start research as tectonic tremor was first detected in subduction zones in the Pacific Northwest in North America and in Japan. Subduction zones are the areas where one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate. Since their discovery seismologists have discovered that tremor occurs in many other places, including the San Andreas Fault in California. The San Andreas Fault marks the boundary where the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate drift past each other; during this process earthquakes are generated. Earthquakes from a North Pole perspective Credit: NASA Back in mid-2010, KIT researchers working together with scientists from the University of California, Riverside, and the US Geological Survey, Pasadena, installed 13 seismic stations near Cholame, located approximately halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Each seismic station was then equipped with a broadband seismometer in a thermally insulated hole in the ground, a small computer and a solar panel for power. The broadband seismometers used are extremely sensitive to small ground motions and were therefore considered ideal for detecting tremor and small earthquakes. The data recorded over a 14-month period is currently being analysed at KIT. Work however began before the installation of the seismic stations. Because tectonic tremor signals have a unique character that differs from earthquakes, they were more difficult to detect using traditional automated techniques. To overcome this challenge, KIT researchers first developed a new algorithm for the automatic isolation of tectonic tremor. Using their new technique, they found over 2,600 tremor events that are now being studied in detail. 'In addition to detecting tremor, we will determine their size or magnitude of the individual events. In order to do so, each of the tremor events must be precisely located,' says Dr Harrington. Between October 2004 and January 2008 the Mount St. Helens volcano continuously erupted with a gradual extrusion of magma which resulted in the gradual building up of a new lava dome. Earth-Sun Position Changes Make Modern World Cooler Than Christ's Time, Tree Rings Reveal 2000 Year Cooling Trend It may not seem like it with the current heat wave with record high temperatures in many places and drought hitting 56% of the U.S., but the world has actually undergone a 2000 year cooling trend according to German scientists. But it's not that much cooler. Dendrochronology (tree-ring dating) offers researchers key information about certain aspects of past ecologies, such as the climate. Taking advantage of the opportunity to evaluate tree-rings, an international team of researchers has reconstructed the climate in northern Europe over the last 2,000 years. The findings, presented in the journal Nature Climate Change, reveal that the long-term trend over this period has been towards climatic cooling. The reconstruction provides a high-resolution representation of temperature patterns in the Roman and Medieval warm periods, but also shows the cold phases that occurred during the Migration Period and the later Little Ice Age. Led by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), researchers from Finland, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom used tree-ring density measurements from Lapland (Finland)-based sub-fossil pine trees to reconstruct the climate as far back as 138 BC. 'We found that previous estimates of historical temperatures during the Roman era and the Middle Ages were too low,' said lead author, Professor Jan Esper from the Institute of Geography at JGU. 'Such findings are also significant with regard to climate policy, as they will influence the way today's climate changes are seen in context of historical warm periods.' Is our planet warmer today than what it was during the Roman and Medieval times? Palaeoclimatology gave researchers the chance to find out. In general, analysis of ice cores and ocean sediments help experts draw a picture of the past. But tree-rings reveal key information as well, giving scientists a glimpse into how warm and cool past climate conditions were up to 2,000 years ago. For the purposes of this study, the researchers used density measurements from sub-fossil pine trees way up in the Nordic region to establish the sequence they needed. According to them, because the density measurements are closely linked with the summer temperatures in this area on the edge of the Nordic taiga (i.e. boreal forest), it was possible for them to create a high-quality temperature reconstruction. The researchers said they clinched a high-resolution representation of temperature patterns in both the Roman and Medieval warm periods, and they observed that cold phases emerged during the Migration Period and the Little Ice Age. Based on their reconstruction, the team showed the trend involves a cooling of -0.3 degrees Celsius per millennium due to gradual changes to the position of the Sun and an increase in the distance between the Sun and the Earth. 'This figure we calculated may not seem particularly significant,' Professor Esper said. 'However, it is also not negligible when compared to global warming, which up to now has been less than 1 degree Celsius. Our results suggest that the large-scale climate reconstruction shown by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) likely underestimate this long-term cooling trend over the past few millennia.' Such "sonification" efforts have previously made sounds and musical scores based on data extracted from different sources ranging from the Sun to volcanoes. On Wednesday, July 4, scientists at the world's largest nuclear research laboratory on the outskirts of Geneva, CERN, announced that they had found a Higgs-like particle, dubbed the "God particle,” after analyzing results from the LHC. Scientists at CERN used the multibillion-dollar particle accelerator to emit two beams of protons in opposite directions around the 27-km (17-mile) looped pipe built under the Swiss-French border before smashing them into each other. Researchers detected a "bump" in their data corresponding to a particle weighing in at 126 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), consistent with the Higgs Boson, which is believed to give mass to all other particles. "As soon as the announcement was made, we begun working on the sonification of the experimental data," Domenico Vicinanza, product manager at DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe), located in Cambridge, UK, said. "Sonification worked by attaching a musical note to each data. So, when you hear the resulting melody you really are hearing the data," he added. "In this way any regularity in the scientific data can be naturally mapped to the melody: if the data are periodic (they are marked by a repeated cycle) the sonification will be a music melody which will have the same periodicity and regularity," Vicinanza said. The new subatomic particle, a basic building block of the universe which confers mass to matter, appears to be the boson imagined half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs -- hence called the Higgs boson. Because of its significant role in the making of the material universe, the boson is sometimes called the "God particle" as its existence is fundamental to the creation of the universe, and its discovery involved thousands of scientists from all over the world. Scientists see the confirmation of Higgs theory as accelerating investigations into the still unexplained "dark matter" they believe pervades the universe and into the possibility of a fourth or more dimensions, or of parallel universes.
