Title: What makes it a good game or not ?
Post by Sprintcyclist on Oct 29th, 2011 at 10:01am

What makes a game any good or not ?
I don't mean a specific match, but the overall week to week games ?

In the Sprinty definition, in a good game a side can score 100 points.
It might be a rareity, but it is a possibility.

So we have AFL, league, union, cricket, golf , basketball.
All good games.

soccer, netball - bad games.

A good game is a close game where both sides fight it out to the end.....Soccer and netball are great games.....I often watch the Diamonds play and follow Australia with passion in the soccer world cup....Now if you want to argue which is better Union or League I think I would have to support Union as the better game!!!

;)

Totally agree!

My teenage daughter plays both soccer and netball .. and she absolutely loves it! I enjoy watching her play!

My teenage son on the other hand plays Rugby Union and Rugby League <-- both games make me feel nervous in terms of safety so as a mum I have to say I can't relax so as to enjoy watching him play.

Some sports are no doubt far better to play than watch....but the competition is what drives all playes no matter what sport they play.....I am sure you will find yourself cheering your son when the competition gets close!!!

I agree that Soccer is crap.  All that diving on the ground play acting to get a free kick is just embarrassing. :(

soccer and netball are poo.
cut the rot about "when your kid ..........."

I am NOT talking about a specific match, I m talking about a game as a whole.
soccer - can watch for 90 minutes, it is 0 - 0 , or 1 - 0, hence the riots.

AFL, a side can be 20 pts down with 8 minutes to play, and win.

the world rugby grand final was a boring as a blown lamp.

Sport is a pretty simple concept. It's all about getting the best from yourself.

When you watch a team, or a player, who is obviously outclassed, putting in their very best, it can be something great to watch even though the scores might not be very close.

On the other hand, you can have a furfie like the Ireland/Australia game where the aussies were completely outclassed with the round ball, but decided to try to overcome their lack of skill with dumbass desperate physicality. It just made them look like dummies.
In that regard, I think that it would have been more productive to just cop it on the chin and learn a bit for the next time.

The game could be very good, but there is an obvious "money based" lack of incentive for our players to want to develop the skills to play it.

The lack of real heart for the game, and the obvious "short list" who were allowed to play in it made it tediously boring.

Forget all of that "playing for your country bs". It's only about easy ratings aimed at the dumb viewer. It was also a total disrespect to the Irish in the name of ratings, and that's not what our sport is about.

A good close competative game where both sides bring out the best example of the sport they are playing.
Although I follow the Blues in League, I walked out at half-time because it was a dismal display of dropped balls, simple tactics and kicking. If I wanna watch kicking - I'll watch AFL or Soccer, eh :-?

Sure, Union has got its 'rules' correct by 90% but Union is so set in 'traditions' that they become 'predictable'. League isn't so traditional, its rules are upon a whim and thus you just never know who might win mostly. Take the Penrith GF win from last place.

If I'm gonna waste 80mins or more of my life sitting like a person who has autism and just stares at something. Then I want it to be a bloody good game!
Sure I have my favourite teams: Cronulla/Geelong/Rebels/Redbacks/Swifts/Mariners
...but if they lose in a really good game, then I still feel like a winner.

I turn off League quite a lot because it is a terrible example of a sport where rules are just flimpant and pathetic. Its our premier 'tackling' game and even that has gone out the window. In AFL, there are 80% less great leaping marks, than the old days. Even their rules are out the window.

I find the VIDEO REF/UMP and absolute joke in all codes.
If a Ref/Ump can't call it as HE/SHE sees it - then what's the point? :-?
After the game - video assess the refs/umps upon their success rate of calling the game. The more decisions they get right, the more money they make. The more they get wrong, the more they are 'deducted'.
Chances are, you will find Refs/Umps having a higher success rate of decisions made there and then and the games will be all the better for it!

If things don't change - soon we will have players calling for video to see if they should run the ball wide or chip kick, or hit for onside or just go for the single.

Trial by Video 'during' a game has turned me away from sport considerably!!!!!!!!!!!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzport. ::)

I represented my district in Football (AFL), Cricket, Basketball and Baseball. All team stuff.

I’ve won Golf competitions and love darts and 8-ball – More individual pursuits.

Love watching league and union.

Is fishing sport? I love fishing.

Love competing individually and as part of a team.

And having cans after  ;)

Never got soccer and don't care but netball is an excellent game. I have three daughters that play or have played and the top level is exciting to watch. Next time AU and NZ play have a look you will be surprised how physical a non contact sport can be.

The current cricket tour in the UK is sad, that does not make me excited.
