The 1998 findings have been confirmed by several studies, Professor Mann said. "The way you get ahead in science is by proving the other guys wrong," Professor Mann said. "There is literally no study in the peer-reviewed scientific literature that contradicts our original conclusion." Last week, Texas Governor Rick Perry, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, renewed the assertion that scientists have "manipulated" data on climate change. "It was a pretty definitive finding" that the charges "swirling around for over a year" were baseless, Professor Mann said in an interview. "I was very pleased." The report confirms findings from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's inspector general and a separate panel of seven scientists based at universities in the Britain, US and Switzerland. The University of East Anglia announced the committee. Ron Oxburgh, the former head of Shell Transport & Trading Plc and a member of the Britain House of Lords, was chairman. 'Closes the books' "It certainly closes the books on Michael Mann and the emails," Joe Romm, a blogger for the Centre for American Progress, an advocacy group with ties to President Barack Obama's administration, said in an interview. "They found nothing wrong with the science, or any evidence that there was anything wrong with how the scientists went about their work." The inquiries focused on the University of East Anglia's climate-research unit, which stored the poached emails on its computer server. The university's work contributed to some of the key findings of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has issued reports that blame human activity for rising temperatures. Emails to and from Professor Mann were in the pilfered cache. One message by another scientist discussing Professor Mann's work spoke of a "trick" used in presenting data to smooth out year-to-year anomalies in climate-change information. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's report, released in February, was requested by US Senator James Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican who called the theory of man-made climate change a hoax. The report found no evidence of "manipulation of data". 'Deeply troubling' "To say that the scientists have been vindicated is oversimplifying the situation," Matt Dempsey, a spokesman for Inhofe, said in an interview yesterday. "What was revealed as part of the Climategate scandal was deeply troubling and certainly a setback for climate science." A report on the dispute commissioned by the University of East Anglia found that, while the honesty and rigour of Britain scientists were not in doubt, they may have deleted emails to avoid having to make them public. "There has been a consistent pattern of failing to display the proper degree of openness," the panel said in July 2010. Presidential campaign Climate change has emerged as an issue in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. "There are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects," Perry said last week. "I think we're seeing almost weekly, or even daily, scientists that are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change." Another Republican candidate, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, has said he believes human activity is causing climate change.

As we see from Climategate 2.0, people should buy shares in 'whitewash' as there has been plenty of use of this product and plenty to come.

Is Mann even a scientist. You should check out the failings of his Hockey Stick and the utter poor judgement (or was it, as it made a nice hockey stick and good for the cause) to use tree ring data in the first place.

A tree only grows on land. That excludes 70% of the earth covered by water. A tree does no grow on ice. A tree does not grow in a desert. A tree does not grow on grassland-savannahs. A tree does not grow in alpine areas. A tree does not grow in the tundra We are left with perhaps 15% of the planet upon which forests grow/grew. That does not make any studies from tree rings global, or even hemispheric.

The width and density of tree rings is dependent upon the following variables which cannot be reliably separated from each other. sunlight – if the sun varies, the ring will vary. But not at night of course.

cloudiness – more clouds, less sun, less ring.

pests/disease – a caterpillar or locust plague will reduce photosynthesis

access to sunlight – competition within a forest can disadvantage or advantage some trees.

moisture/rainfall – a key variable. Trees do not prosper in a droughteven if there’s a heat wave.

snow packing in spring around the base of the trees retards growth temperature – finally!

The tree ring is a composite of all these variables, not merely of temperature. Therefore on the 15% of the planet covered by trees, their rings do not and cannot accurately record temperature in isolation from the other environmental variables.

In my article on Greening Earth Society on the Hockey Stick, I point to other evidence which contradicts Mann’s theory. The Idso’s have produced more of that evidence, and a new article on Greening Earth has `unearthed’ even more.

Mann’s theory simply does not stack up. But that was not the key issue. Anyone can put up a dud theory from time to time. What is at issue is the uncritical zeal with which the industry siezed on the theory before its scientific value had been properly tested. In one go, they tossed aside dozens of studies which confirmed the existence of the MWE and LIA as global events, and all on the basis of tree rings – a proxy which has all the deficiencies I have stated above.

The worst thing I can say about any paper such as his is that it is `bad science’. Legal restraint prevents me going further. But in his case, only those restraints prevent me going *much* further.

Shares in 'whitewash' just went up. Keep buying, climate alarmists.

From the Climategatew 2.0 collection, Keith Briffa wonders out loud to Michael Mann whether he should participate in the 2007 National Research Council (often mistakenly referred to as the National Academy of Sciences) review of the hokey stick. Mann encourages Briffa, but tells him not to worry since its all arranged to produce the right outcome.
