Most importantly, researchers discovered that the lowest layers of ice, those right against the ground, themselves slide rather than simply being crushed by the immense weight from above (as was previously assumed). “That’s critical knowledge for predicting future sea level rise. It means that if we lose ice at the coasts from the warming ocean, we open the tap to massive amounts of ice in the interior.” said Thomas Wagner of NASA’s cryospheric program. That’s pretty bad news for the climate, now instead of having to worry about the entirety of the ice caps melting, we now have to account for losing a much smaller amount–in the form of these ice plugs–before the gooey liquid centre of Antarctica leaks out into the ocean and destroys the salinity balance. Cue the Michael Bay pitches in 3… 2… 1…

Basically, there is now a risk that the ice could melt through to the vast underground lakes that are spotted around Antarctica and other vast Glacial areas. The result would be like taking a massive amount of fresh water and filtering it into the worlds Oceans.

I think we have to minimise announcements of doomsday scenarios. It really causes "climate change fatigue", people take revolt against it and that is even worse than being uninformed. Getting people to do anything about it is really hard as it is. At the end of the day it would be nice if we could act before something everyone can understand happens.

At the end of the day I hope this planet isn't like a smoker that keeps smoking after they cough up a piece of tumour.

There are plenty of glaciers around that move faster than that.

The article is kind of lacking in perspective.
