He doesn't fit with the Liberals/Nationals, and CERTAINLY doesn't fit with Labor.

A very good question, but I would ask the question how any politician with half a brain could be apart of either of the major parties.

Turnbull doesnt fit with Abbott and half the party that thinks like him, but Turnbull is a classic Liberal if you think of Liberal in the pre-Howard years.

No point Turnbull being an independent. Unless you get a hung parliment, you are useless.
He should start his own "centre-ist" party though. I reackon he could take the left side of the liberals, and the right side of labor and become the 3rd major party.  We be in perpetual hung parliments but  they would either be coalitions of Labor/Turnbulites or Lib/Turnbullites

Tony Abbott is gone... Turnbull doesn't need to go independant!

Because he wants to be PM or Treasurer.
You cant do either of those things as an independent.

Or just PM . . .plus he has an uncontrollable urge to stick around (Like Rudd) and contribute whatever he can to the demise of his successor.

Lol, you wish. He is too Left to ever become Leader of the Libs again. They'll stick with Abbott and Bishop, as they should.

although given that the Libs have the biggest margin in DECADES he is obviously not doing much of a job destabilising!

Why change a winning game plan? The Coalition has a much higer primary and two party preferred vote, and Abbott has caught up to Gillard as preferred PM. No way will Turnbull get the numbers to become leader.

Yep, Turnbull is the same as every Liberal leader before Howard, with the exception of Billy McMahon when the Liberals were liberal. It is not Turnbull that is different, it is Abbott.

i love laughing as i read the never ending stream of laborites saying that Abbott is finished as the Libs sit on 49% primary vote and Labor on 27%. I normally think laborites are fools but they way they bahave at the moment merely proves it.

He probably wields far more power as part of the coalition. After all, he did lead them for a while. As an independent, he would only have a slim chance of having any say at all. He could well be the PM one day.

ABBOTTS HEAD WILL ROLL SOON ENOUGH!

No DRAH, it's only the Labor Party that is silly enough to replace a leader with good numbers, or the potential to win government in mid-term..

IF, and it's a big if, the Coalition get hammered at the next election...that's when a leadership challenge might work..

it is amusing listening to the laborites predict Abbotts demise. Ive always thought laborites were stupid but this is even dumber than I thought possible!
