Title: McDonalds Not Welcome In Tecoma
Post by Prevailing on Jun 18th, 2011 at 5:28pm
A massive protest is gathering momentum in the beautiful rural town of Tecoma, near Emerald Victoria to stop Multi National fast food giant MaDonalds from opening and trading in their town.  The residence are citing environmental and disturbance factors as the reasons for their stand.

I for one agree - McDonalds are multinational corporate scum with a huge carbon deficit to the Earth and humanity and should be banished town by town.

Quote:
McProtest gathers momentum in Tecoma

OPPOSITION to McDonald’s opening in Tecoma continues to grow, with Save Tecoma signs now appearing on power poles throughout the hills.

The Save Tecoma Signs, which show the McDonald’s symbol with a red cross over it, have been put on poles in Tecoma and Belgrave.

The company wants to open a 24/7 restaurant at 1529-31 Burwood Highway.

More than 200 residents attended a community meeting in Tecoma a fortnight ago to show their opposition to the plan.

Almost 1000 people have also joined a Keep McDonald’s out of the Dandenong Ranges Facebook page.

All McDonalds does is leech money out of small local communities destroys small businesses and dramaticly increases the incidences of obesity, cancers, heart disease and diabetes.
Why would anyone want this multinational junk food machine in their community?

This is how I invisage making the big polluters pay - reclaiing our local communities, supporting local business and banishing the big polluters, not subsidizing them with a "Carbon Tax".  I wonder what JuLIAR and Bob Brown are thinking... ::)

Tecoma is a tiny area if people want Maccas then they can always simply go to nearby Boronia or Fern Tree Gully.
I know Maccas are everywhere but surely those cravings can be held back for a few kilometers.

That would depend on its commitment to manufacturing and jobs in Australia, I am done with outsourcing corporate parasites.  If they want to operate according to the corporate ethics of the past, they can pack up right now and leave and we will build our own from the ground up.8-)

And then there's all the fringe employment that Maccas encourages and provides, as well as the suppliers to Maccas

Multinationals have no right to trade in our communities if the cost is greater than the benefit that trade brings - Maccas is useless trade. :)

Did you think before you posted or are you just trolling and hoping to get those of lesser intelligence to yourself to get irate?

As you post is suggesting a massive increase in unemployment, economic instability with a massive impact on our balance of payments.

Think about the number of multinational companies in our country. There maybe somethat you approve of their products and/or services and maybe there's some like maccas that you don't.
Either way they all provide a lot of emloyment directly and even more indirectly along with numerous suppliers.
As a starter, you'd be advocating for the complete dismissal of the motor vehicle industry - many thousands out of work.

Not in Australia, as their wages are rigourlessly monitored.

And would you also be against KFC, Hungry Jacks, Red Rooster, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Wendy's, Taco Bills, Gloria Jeans, & Subway (amongst others)?

By and large there is no problem for large multinationals to seek business in a densely urban area.  But the problem with there being one in tecoma is that it is a tourist spot in Melbourne, and many small businesses may in fact suffer as tourists opt to eat the fast option rather than the nice option.  It's like opening a Woolworths in a small town and seeing all the small grocers going out of business because of it.

The footy doesn't know where Tecoma is.
As posted earlier, no need for a Maccas at Tecoma as there's a Maccas in Boronia and one in Fern Tree Gully, and they're only a few kilomteres away.

True - and, as it so happens, I have signed a number of petitions against such a proposal that would change the character of my semi-isolated community and almost-certainly destroy the livelihoods of the families running several local small businesses...

Not that I ever really expected that the corporation at issue would give up and go away...

Actually I used to live in Mt Dandenong, knucklehead.  ;D

There's also a Mcdonalds in Knox, Scoresby, Croydon and Rowville.  That's not the reason for there to not be one in Tecoma.  The reason is it would be in direct competition with smaller businesses that depend on the tourist traffic, and considering Macca's outreach and brand, it would be no surprise to me if small business in the area shut down because of it.

BTW, which Maccas you work at, creep? I would like to know because I still have relatives in Mt Dandneong and want to make sure I don't visit your Maccas because I know you don't wash your hands, and those fries would have a peculiar smell I bet!  Now, isn't it time you went back to studying? Year 9 exams are surely still on, aren't they?

It's the main reason why Phillip Island has a ban on them ever opening up a store there.

And you're right - Maccas will always lobby to increase their locations. I think their ambition is to have a store in every suburb and every town. It's almost ridiculous; you can't drive more than 10 kms without seeing 3 along the way. Talk about Fast Food Nation!

Tecoma is only a dot on a map, about 2 sq kilomters.
Hardly any room as it is.
Very little shops only about a dozen at best so would virtually consume all the other shops in order to have just one Maccas.
The attraction isn't Maccas
What looks more likely is that Maccas will build another in Belgrave, or Upwey.

It won't stop the loss of these small businesses as Aldi are coming anyway.

Now a pie and a pastie washed down with a French Vanilla slice from the Emerald Bakery - that will put a smile on my dial - you can keep your McChucks in your part of the world.  Sadly Blood sugar concerns makes this impractical though. :(

Now Im not suggesting that you eat it everyday, I mean I believe in moderation and I believe maqqa is best appreciated like having it every fortnight or so or once a month, so I would stick to more homemade healthy meals, maqqas just like everything should be taken in moderation.

its like everything else over indulge and you will pay for it..down the track.

howevr regarding the good folks not wanting it in their backyard... then thats what it should be.. the local councils are there for the people.. not to please conglomerates..maccas also takes business away from smaller business because of their might and power if there are small cafes and teahouses they will feel the pinch..

Tecoma is not polluted by your corporate filth - it is Australia - 40 years ago - time has stood still - they don't need your degenerate culture - MacChucks, KFC ect when theirs is so much more superior.

::) ::)

You would be best advised to keep your filth out - folks in the Mountains won't take kindly to being forced to pay a carbon tax for the privilage of having your degenerate fast food chains in their towns. :)

This is an environmental pollution issue and multinational fast food chains are not welcome - they are a threat to the happiness and health of the community.

Honestly, after seeing the pictures of the proposed site, I dont think its as bad as people are making it out to be. I have lived in the Belgrave/Tecoma area for all my life, (27) years and have seen an endless revolving door of businesses open up, trade for a year then shut down. From where I see it, there is nothing to lose by having a McDonalds open up. Whether you like it or not the community will benefit from the 80-100 jobs created, and the support of the local sporting clubs. Other family owned cafes and fast food outlets will survive, after all, if you enjoy a coffee at the Green Bean or the Reel Cafe, why would you change to mcdonalds just because its there? And you cant feed a family for under $25 at mcdonalds, but you can with Pizza or Fish and chips, so its not like people are going to just robotically gravitate to McDonalds and spend more because it exists and cease spending money elsewhere. Once the hysteria and emotion is taken out of this debate the issue can actually be approached logically and discussed properly.
