Title: Advertising, Homophobia and Double Standards
Post by buzzanddidj on Jun 1st, 2011 at 5:44pm
Apparently, this is OFFENSIVE ...

There has been an angry reaction to the removal of a safe sex advertisements in Brisbane featuring two gay men hugging.

Paul Martin from the Queensland Association of Healthy Communities says there has been dozens of complaints about the condom ads at bus shelters.

He says the reaction smacks of homophobia.

"I've got the complaint sent to the Advertising Standards Bureau in front of me and it reads, I quote "to promote this lifestyle to our youth is not in the interests of healthy communities - the only place this message should be seen would be to practising homosexuals, not to impressionable youth in our general public spaces'," he said.

"To me, that's pretty clearly homophobic"

But THIS is quite RESPECTABLE

A RAUNCHY Lee jeans "Lolita-style" advertisement portraying a young woman in a sexually explicit pose has been ruled inoffensive.
The Advertising Standards Board yesterday dismissed complaints about the advertisement – seen on billboards and in magazines – saying while it had sexual overtones, it was not inappropriate.

The advertisement is displayed on a billboard at South Yarra railway station

What's the MESSAGE ?

EXHIBIT "A" - Safe Sex

EXHIBIT "B" - Underage Sex

Point well made, Buzz!

Apparently, the objectifying 'bugger me' juvenile bimbo Ads are OK - but Ads which promote intimacy, mutual respect and protection betwixt adults are not!?

We can see by SOME of the replies, why an ad for safe sex is seen as confronting, yet an ad for skanky young sex is ok.

Um, Buzz....

It wasn't the ASB who were responsible for the ad being
pulled, it was those extremist 'Christian' nutbars from
the ACL (Aust Christian Lobby) who spat the dummy
over the ad.

After an outcry from both gays AND 'straights', the
ad has been re-instated.

BTW, the ACL are one of the main supporters of the
Govt's flawed and unworkable net-filter, and seem to
have virtually unlimited access to Conroy and ACMA.

They are extremists whose views deserve
no credence whatsoever.

Also, I must say that I find NEITHER of the pics
you posted to be in any way offensive. It would
take a pretty sick mind to find the second pic
unacceptable, while the first is simple commonsense.

I will explain it.

Leviticus 20:

Quote:
[13] If a man also lie with mankind,
as he lieth with a woman,
both of them have committed an abomination:
they shall surely be put to death;
their blood shall be upon them.

That also means that those 2 guys will burn forever in hellfire & damnation.
The advertising standards are saving them from hell fire.
See - it wasn't so hard to explain!

Actually, Kat, I find the 'bugger-me' bimbo Ad to be offensive because it objectifies a girl who is pictured in a compromising pose with a phallic symbol on her lips...

Gay safe sex ads reinstated after uproar

Ad company Adshel has reinstated a safe sex campaign for gay couples after it became clear a barrage of complaints about the ads were orchestrated by the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL).

The bus shelter poster campaign spruiking the message "rip and roll", features a gay couple hugging while holding a condom packet.

The offending ads were taken down from around Brisbane yesterday after Adshel, Brisbane City Council and the Advertising Standards Bureau received 30 complaints about the ads.

But the ads' removal also caused an uproar on social media sites, with many furious the posters were brought down.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Adshel said many of the complaints were part of an ACL campaign, and that it has reinstated the ads.

"It has now become clear Adshel has been the target of a coordinated ACL campaign," Adshel chief executive Steve McCarthy said.

"This has led us to review our decision to remove the campaign, and we will therefore reinstate the campaign with immediate effect."

Earlier today the ACL said the issue with the ads was about condoms, not homosexuality.

"I've been labelled homophobic. This has absolutely nothing to do with gay couples," spokeswoman Wendy Francis said.

"This has nothing to do with anything other than another condom ad in a bus shelter, where the children are catching buses to school and billboards where their parents are stopping at lights.

"I will continue to fight sexual imagery in our outdoor advertising until we can get it removed."

The removal of the ads sparked a furore online with #adshel appearing as a trending topic on Twitter today.

Twitter user seymourkylie said Adsehl should be "ashamed" for removing the ads, saying: "Let the standards bureau decide before bowing to fundamentalist pressure."

Another user, uueaver, says the removal of the ads may have had a different effect than intended.

"Hopefully by removing [the] ads, adshel have increased awareness of [the] rip and roll message," the user said.

But other users defended the views held by the ACL that condoms should not feature on public advertising.

"Procreation in public is to be avoided and not pandered to, curtains pleeze (sic)," Twitter user stevieholden said.

Earlier today one of the men featured in the ad, Michael O'Brien, said the campaign should be allowed to show its safe sex message in a public space.

"The aim of this campaign is to promote safe sex for gay men, but also for the wider community," Mr O'Brien said on Facebook.

"We also felt this campaign and the exposure these advertisements granted would help gain a wider level of acceptance of the gay community.

"The image displays not only love and tenderness; you can clearly see our engagement ring and the Christian cross which Anthony wears around his neck.

"We are real people, and this campaign is about real people. We have been together for six-and-a-half years; we've been engaged since August last year, and just last week we were approved to become foster parents, which will now be happening very soon.

"We are real people, with a real life, in real love."

To me, it's a young woman eating a lollipop. But I daresay
that one could find something sexually offensive in just about
anything...IF that's what they're LOOKING to find.

As did the ACL with the condom ad, and as did those
who complained about the lollipop girl.

To me, the views and attitudes of those who seek to ban
these types of thing are far more offensive than that which
they are complaining about. The more-so because they are
seeking to impose THEIR views on others.

There's a fear that sexual orientation can be taught. As more and more children are being raised by same sex couples evidence mounts that that isn't the case. The more ads that depict homosexuality the less will be their impact.

Most heterosexual men, (of my generation) find homosexuality between males a bit confronting, myself included, though I've spent years pushing it down overcoming it rejecting homophobia. Of course lesbianism we find merely titillating challenging in a nice way. It's the strongest and last religious taboo and is truly awful and damaging to our society. Homophobia - it's sad.

Rip & Roll - Queenslanders Stand Up to Australian Christian Lobby
Media Release
1st June 2011

Healthy Communities Welcomes the Return of ‘Rip & Roll’ and Thanks Our Supporters

Healthy Communities welcomes the decision of Adshel to reinstate the ‘Rip & Roll’ campaign to bus shelters across Brisbane with immediate effect.

In a statement released today, Adshel CEO Steve McCarthy stated “It has now become clear that Adshel has been the target of a coordinated ACL campaign. This has led us to review our decision to remove the campaign and we will therefore reinstate the campaign with immediate effect.”“

We thank Adshel for coming to the correct decision and look forward to working with them in this and future sexual health campaigns” said Paul Martin, Healthy Communities Executive Director.

“We’d also like to thank the tens of thousands of supporters who lent their voice, mainly via Facebook and Twitter, to getting the adverts reinstated.

Special appreciation must also go to Michael and his partner who appear in the advert and have been such great advocates for the gay community.”

“The response to the removal of the campaign shows that the overwhelming majority of Queenslanders support the need for sexual health promotion, support the gay community and reject stigma and discrimination.”

Complaints about the ‘Rip & Roll’ campaign are still to be assessed by the Advertising Standards Bureau in the coming week.

Adshel reinstates gay HIV awareness billboard ad after Michael O'Brien's Facebook campaign

UPDATE 6.30pm: The creator of a Facebook page slamming company's decision to scrap HIV awareness campaign is "elated" after the company decided to reinstate the ads.

The agency reinstated the billboards, saying the company was the target of a coordinated campaign by a Christian lobby group.

The backflip comes in the wake of a Facebook page, created yesterday by Michael O’Brien - one of the two men pictured - which by 5.30pm today had attracted a following of more than 40,000 supporters.

"It's fantastic, it feels a little weird," Mr O'Brien told news.com.au.

"It's a great example of people power, it shows we are living in 2011.

"I've had people from all walks of life come out in support for us. It's incredible."

look I am well and truly from another era..I was 17 before I knew what a lesbian was.. I kid you not..

however even I have a smile at an uproar like this.. because I believe our young folk of today are streets ahead of any adult who is falling over because of this quite serious advertising..

I would be interested in how many complaints they received... its everyone right of course but realy I doubt its a huge majority that complained,

and are we not over being led by the nose by minorities?

tell them to get a life... and realize we are not protecting the young folk from anything by pretending it isnt there..

I don't find the ad's offensive.  If I saw it, I might have a little chuckle at the pooftas, but complain?  Nah.
However, I don't find the things the gay lobby incessantly complain about offensive either.  A month or 2 ago, Kobe Bryant was fined a million bucks for mouthing the word 'faggot' at a ref, and you say THIS is petty?

What you 'progressives' fail to realise, is that the very same laws you demanded be set up to protect your attitudes, can also be used by others to protect theirs.

As a Christian I also find the ACL quite daft at times and Jim Wallace quite silly.

the ACL has a place but sometimes they really DONT represent us that well. the interent filter is one example. This ad ban is different tho. We have a problem that ads in this country on TV can be banned after literally one complaint. it needs to be better than that.

I'm pretty sure a) there was no official complaint made by anybody outside the NBA, and b) this was as much about him 'mouthing off' to the referee.

But I do agree, Kobe's comments clearly had nothing to do with homosexuality - faggot means a million different things now (well 3, but still).

I DISAGREE

It's basically a "gang of three" inspired by American fudamentlist pentacostals

Quote:
Three men from different denominational affiliations and backgrounds founded the Australian Christian Coalition (ACC) in 1995. At the time of the founding, two of them resided in Canberra and one in Brisbane. The lobby group was the brainchild of John Gagliardi, a lay leader of a large Pentecostal church in Brisbane, who stated that the vision was to create an organisation that would have influence in the political arena, on behalf of all Christians, no matter what denomination. Promotional material stated that the purpose of the groups was to make a stand against ‘humanistic legislation’ and ‘minority groups’. Gagliardi’s background was in journalism, and he held positions as Editor of the Townsville Bulletin and as anchorman for the Channel 10 news. Gagliardi had a double Masters in business and politics, he owned and operated a business in Brisbane. John McNicoll was a retired Baptist Minister turned lobbyist in Canberra before becoming involved in the Australian Christian Coalition. John Miller, who worked with a number of community and government organisations in Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory, held leadership positions within his independent, community-based church.

Although the ACC board was cross denominational, according to research carried out by the Christian Research Association, the Coalition was largely supported by Pentecostals.

"Westboro Baptists" in a collar and tie (and a full set of teeth) - if you like

Mainstream, moderate Christian (and Catholic) churches in Australia have largely disassociated themselves from the lobby group

MOST bewidering, is the amount of "puff" the media give them as the "voice" of Australian Christianity

A GAY couple who outraged Queenslanders when they featured in a safe sex bus shelter promotion have announced they are foster parents.
Michael O'Brien and Anthony Gillespie caused an uproar earlier this year after the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities launched its "Rip and Roll" campaign advertising condoms.

But now the pair have been approved to become foster parents to their new son, a nine-year-old Australian boy.

The child has begun visitations and sleepover visits ahead of his full-time placement with the gay pair.

Mr O'Brien said they are thrilled they have become parents and said they also have plans to marry soon.

"We decided to change the life of a child that needed rescuing and we hope to formalise our family through marriage soon," the 25-year-old said.

"I wear an engagement ring from Anthony and I have told our son we will be getting married soon."

The pair featured in a black-and-white image embracing and holding an unopened red condom packet.

Outrage from groups forced the advertisements to be pulled from Queensland bus shelters in late May but they were re-instated after a massive campaign by the public on Facebook
.

Hardly, you forget I speak from personal experience.

I used to work at 55 New Oxford Street.

So if I worked late on a night, I'd have to walk down Tottenham Court Road, past all your lot lined up to go into the Astoria - wearing clothes that were nothing short of disgusting and behaving completely immorally in front of everyday people.

Kylie, Abba etc were all the rage.

I know your type all too well.

I used to cross the street so I didn't share a footpath with them.

I personally find the gay advertisement repulsive, makes my stomach turn. That's the way I feel towards homosexuality, it gives me shudders of revulsion.

I personally don't like gays, I don't actually care if they marry or not- its not like I believe in marriage and think it means anything, but I am 100% totally against gays adopting / fostering children.

I found out my cousin was gay, and I disowned him- haven't had anything to do with him since it was confirmed, cut him out of my life and couldn't care less if he ends up dead. But he always was a nutcase. I was the first person to reveal it to his family- the first person in the family to find out he was gay, and now his Christian mother has disowned him, and his own brother has little to do with him. He lives a pretty lonely, pathetic life- but I don't care one little bit, and I am glad I helped ruin his pathetic life.

I don't tolerate gay people in my life.

I am not brainwashed with the pathetic modern day political correctness that forms most peoples opinions these days.

I don't want gays persecuted, just keep them away from me, and don't let them have kids, I believe in mother natures formula- if you can't get naturally pregnant, you shouldn't have them. I believe homosexuality is a personality related mental disorder- a perversion, and such people are inherently mentally unstable.

Oh and if you guys don't like my opinions, I couldn't give a poo. You won't change my opinions in the slightest.
