Can't watch it right now, but I wonder what happened to the accusations of bias against the ABC?

Nup, they don`t handle scrutiny well at all.  Observe the feeble attempt at diversion, above.

Greens supporters are throwing a tantrum on Twitter this morning, complaining of unfairness and branding Uhlmann and the ABC "a spokesman for the Minerals Council and coal lobby" etc. and saying that Uhlmann is a "bully of the Right".

Funny too that all the guy did was push booby for the truth of his own words.

I'm wondering how you get diversion out of that?
It's a perfectly legitimate question when the accusation is levelled at every opportunity that the ABC is full of Commies & Greenies out to destroy the conservative party of Australia.

I did like how brown the clown tried to deny his party was hell bent on shutting down the coal industry, maybe he should read his own policies.  ;D

He was squirming out of being forced to tell the truth, nice work but I thought he could have gone in harder.

$50 bil a year from exporting solar panels, good one brown you idiot.  ;D

CHRIS UHLMANN: We're joined in the studio by Greens leader Bob Brown, welcome to 7:30.

BOB BROWN, GREENS LEADER: Hi, Chris.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Did you force the Prime Minister into a carbon tax?

BOB BROWN: No. We did make clear that we had the Garnaut prescription for a tax and then a...

CHRIS UHLMANN: That was one year followed by a trading scheme?

BOB BROWN: That's right. Well, no, it wasn't one year it was a period but we went to the election with that prescription. We then made an agreement with the Prime Minister to set up a committee to look at that and be informed by experts and out of that committee has come the prescription that we, or the framework, we now know about.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Sure but she says she had her heart set on a carbon market and now she's been forced into a carbon tax and if you didn't force her and Independents didn't force her and she wants one, why don't we have one?

BOB BROWN: She's getting a carbon market. There's a tax on the way to a carbon market.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Three to five years.

BOB BROWN: That's right.

CHRIS UHLMANN: There is a review after that so there may not ever be a carbon market.

BOB BROWN: Everybody's agreed a carbon market is where we're aiming. We have always said that ourselves, Christine Milne's been very strong on that. We'll hopefully dove-tail into a world which has got an international market going and Australia will be a leader in establishing that international climate for reducing carbon.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Sure, I understand what it would do but can you understand why people might be a bit bemused if the Prime Minister says she's been forceded into a carbon tax that might go five years or longer because it's going to be reviewed and you weren't happy to have a carbon market - the Independents were happy to have a carbon market and she was too, so who forced her into having a tax up front?

BOB BROWN: I don't know. You'll have to ask her about this.

CHRIS UHLMANN: I have.

BOB BROWN: Is this the issue?

CHRIS UHLMANN: I think it is, yes.

BOB BROWN: Is it for you but for us it's getting our great country of ours into an economically responsible trajectory for an age of environmental economic wellbeing. The German Government has just pointed out this week that they are going to take the lead here, they're not going to allow Obama to overtake them because their legislation in this area seven years ago has created 250,000 jobs and that will be 900,000 jobs by 2030 and they want to stay in front.

CHRIS UHLMANN: We can come to that in a moment. The point here is the Prime Minister made a very big play before the election was held about there not being a tax. There is now a tax. Might go three to five years. She says she's been forced into that position. I'm trying to establish who forced her.

BOB BROWN: I have been to no committee meetings with a thumb screw.

CHRIS UHLMANN: It wasn't you is the short story?

Title: Re: Bob Brown destroyed by Chris Uhlmann on ABC's 7.30

BOB BROWN: Absolutely. We've had a mature discussion about how to move Australia to a carbon price and there's Independents, Greens, the Labor Government, remember Tony Abbott sat out of this. Tony Abbott's prescription is to give the polluters the money off the taxpayers. What we're moving to here through a tax on polluters or, and a trading scheme, is to take the money from the polluters and give it to the householders and general economy and renewable energy and people like that and that's where I think the problem is for Tony Abbott. He's backing the wrong horse. He's saying, "Take the money off the people, give it to the polluters." We're saying, "Take it off the polluters and make sure you look after the people."

CHRIS UHLMANN: But you'll take the money off the polluters which are also big employers and they will take it off the people. Isn't that the case?

BOB BROWN: Really?

CHRIS UHLMANN: Well in...

BOB BROWN: In Germany where they've done this, I just reiterate 250,000 jobs created. Are we going to look after the 68,000 jobs on the Great Barrier Reef? That's twice as many as in the whole of the coal industry. Are we going to look after the manufacturing sector in Australia and make sure it's got the advantage of being a world leader in an age where you have to take an ecological lead and look after the jobs there or are we going to take the Abbott view which is very last century and is going to leave us at the back of the pack.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Briefly, the jobs in Germany came at a cost of 205,000 Euros each by way of subsidies. Is that a fair price for a job?

BOB BROWN: Whatever way you look at it, Chris, they are on to a winner and want to take it forward and if you're talking about subsidies, how about the $11 billion a year in fossil fuel subsidies go off taxpayers to that industry at the moment with a very, very sparse return in terms of jobs.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Do you believe that markets are an efficient way of pricing things? Because we've just had the experience of the financial crisis so you say this is where we should go but are markets the best way to do?

BOB BROWN: In the financial crisis it was the Greens who took the responsible point of view that we should back the Government's stimulus package and that saved 600,000 jobs and lot of small businesses with it. The Abbott crew opposed that.

CHRIS UHLMANN: But are markets the best way of pricing this?

BOB BROWN: The point I'm making here is we backed free enterprise but Government is there to look after the interests of the people who vote us in and to regulate and we've done that very successfully and the Greens have shown a great deal more responsibility there than the Abbott coalition.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Now you've handed me some figures, you've done some polling, you think that this the move that you're making on carbon pricing is very popular. Why is that?

BOB BROWN: The Galaxy poll is part of an omnibus poll done on the weekend, Chris, showed that where you ask people do they think the polluters should be paying or do they think the polluters should be given money to achieve a reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions. People by more than three to one in Australia say no, the polluters should pay. In other words, Tony Abbott is on a loser.

CHRIS UHLMANN: You didn't ask consumers whether or not they were prepared to pay themselves. You did't ask consumers whether or not they were prepared to pay a price that might be passed on by an electricity company.

BOB BROWN: You mustn't underestimate the intelligence of the Australian people. They know if the money comes off the polluters that's going to be available for renewable energy and to be able to shelter them from increased prices due to that polluter-pays principle. The problem for Tony Abbott is he's going to take $30 billion out of the taxpayers' coffers over the next 10 years and give it to the polluters and to re-jigging the economy. That's going to cost households $720 per household 10 years from now while the polluters haven't paid a thing. That's the wrong way to go.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Bob Brown, finally on Libya, what is the mission? What is the Coalition setting out to achieve?

BOB BROWN: To stop the destruction of a city of a million people, of Benghazi, by this madman, Gaddafi, who's said he would hunt people down to their closets, there would be blood running in the streets, he'd show no mercy.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Should he not go because of a no-fly zone, should the allied forces try and take him out themselves?

BOB BROWN: Well, you know, if you asked me, I wouldn't advise that to be their mission but I think the sooner Mr Gaddafi, like Idi Amin, is of the scene, the better for the people of Libya and the better for the world. Very difficult decision but the Greens, as with our very early support for action in East Timor, believe that this is the right way to go. There's all sorts of complexities coming down the line but we support it.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Bob Brown, thank you.

Brown struggled big time.

I think he is starting to realise he isnt in the back of the room yelling anymore, and must now justify his stance to the people, and the people dont believe him.

Pretty sad when Bobby puts more focus on Abbott instead of himself and their own position.

The best form of defence is a brillant offense, and Brown had none of that today.

I dont give two craps what you think of Abbott Bob, I want to know what YOU think, since your the one driving the agenda.

I am just not feelin it. This is by no way enough to deter people from Abbott. At this stage I think he would have to press a nuke button (if we had one) and blow up part of Australia by accident, to lose the next election.

what is it about people like Bob Brown...

at the end of the day he can tell us dollar for dollar and how long it will take.. for Abbott policy..

yet can tell us almost nothing about his own policy even down to length of time for TAX or even if a price wil be the call..I find that quite amazing...

does he just study the Libs and draw straws with the labs?????

or does he make it all up....seems odd to me he has got Abbott all worked out but not his own.

So true...

BOB BROWN: (Blah, blah, blah)... subsidies to the polluting fossil fuel industries. For example, $1.7 billion to the coal mining industry so that they pay 38 cents a litre less for their fuel than the average punter in Australia.

CHRIS UHLMANN: So you're talking about the diesel fuel rebate scheme?

BOB BROWN: That's a component of it but I emphasise that the big coal industry - largely owned outside Australia - pays 38 cents less than the average Australian, including small business people, for its fuel because of this massive subsidy going to actually promote pollution.

CHRIS UHLMANN: But that subsidy also goes to farmers, it goes to hospitals, it goes to nursing homes, so you would withdraw that as well to subsidise complementary measures?

BOB BROWN: Six hundred million goes to farmers, a tiny fraction, which we would keep in place. But when it comes to this massive subsidy - multibillion subsidy - to the mining industry...(blah, blah, blah...  )

Soooo... clustafeck Brown admits its the same 'rebate' that the farmers get.. :-?

The fuel tax is basicly for funding public roads.

As a farmer using tractors etc that arn't used on public roads the Diesel fuel rebate scheme applys to me. The rebate is an exemption of a road tax for those not using roads.

Why should the fuel for mine equipment that is NOT using public roads be taxed fer public road works ? i

Oh boy, yer just gotta look at that interview a few times because its a bit hard to take it in while yer laughing at the shear stupidity of BOB BROWN... ;D

CHRIS UHLMANN: That $11 billion that you're talking about is money that he would forego in the mining tax, and I noticed you started your budget and reply speech just there. How would you replace the $50 billion a year in export income which comes by way of coal - an industry that you'd shut down?

BOB BROWN: Well, a lot of that money is bouncing straight back out to shareholders overseas. Now what we're...

CHRIS UHLMANN: A lot of that money is circulating in the economy. It's creating job, Senator, it's bouncing through to our cities.

BOB BROWN: Yes, Chris, and what we would do is take the advice of the Treasury of this nation and recoup the $145 billion over the next 10 years through a super profits tax. Tony Abbott says...

CHRIS UHLMANN: But you can't recoup it if you shut the industry down.

BOB BROWN: Treasury...

CHRIS UHLMANN: If you shut the coal industry down there won't be that money...

BOB BROWN: I'm sorry

He did struggle, interestingly. I would of thought the questions easy for one of the few honest and open political leaders we have.
I say that not because i agree with him, but because i would find it impossible to suggest otherwise.

But can anyone explain why Uhlmanns premise was not totally bogus.

What does a phase out mean? Just because Uhlmann wanted it to mean '50 billion dollars' does not make it so.

He did struggle, but his words were honest and sufficient.

Well i think Bob Browns words do that. Does he say that he would like to see a phase out of coal while being replaced with other industries?
or does he say he wants the coal industry shut down tomorrow and is happy to see 50b dollars dissappear with it?

In a broader sense, the world is trying to move towards being carbon neutral. Unless the consumption of coal can be worked into that aim, than the world is trying to phase out coal.

Am i mistaken in my interpretation?

Little Britain's 50 per cent plan for giant carbon cut makes ours look tiny
Malcolm Farr
May 18, 2011

*UK Conservatives approve 50 per cent carbon cut
*Australia's agrees to tiny five per cent cut by 2020
*Countries taking climate change seriously - Combet

BRITAIN'S Tory Prime Minister David Cameron has approved a savage reduction in carbon pollution which makes the Australian target look puny.

The British coalition government today agreed to a 50 per cent cut in emissions by 2025, and the plan has the backing of the nation's industry leaders.

In Australia there is a target agreed to by Labor and the Liberals for a five by 2020, and so far there is no government plan to achieve this.

Further, it is not possible to directly compare the economies and energy systems of the two countries.

However, Climate Change Minister Greg Combet didn't miss the opportunity and said today the British decision was "further evidence that countries around the world take climate change seriously''.

"The UK has been participating in emissions trading for nearly a decade and - in contrast to what (Opposition Leader) Tony Abbott would have you believe - the sky has not fallen,'' said Mr Combet.

Uhlmann - Brown interview continues....

BOB BROWN: I'm sorry...

CHRIS UHLMANN: ..available to you.

BOB BROWN: I'm sorry, Chris, Treasury has no intention to shut the industry down. it tends to- it tends...

CHRIS UHLMANN: No, but you do.

BOB BROWN: No, I'm not.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Didn't you say back in 2007 that we had to kick the coal habit?

BOB BROWN: No, I did not. You're looking at the Murdoch press, where I said back in 2007 we should look at coal exports with a view to phasing them out down the line.

CHRIS UHLMANN: It wasn't the Murdoch press, it was a comment piece that you wrote. So you want to phase out the coal industry?

BOB BROWN: The world is going to do that because it is causing massive economic damage down the line through the impact of climate change.

CHRIS UHLMANN: But the question-

BOB BROWN: No, let me...

CHRIS UHLMANN: The simple question is how do you replace $50 billion worth of export income?

BOB BROWN: You go to renewables over the coming decades and you do that by exporting... Look, Germany did this. It's closed its coal mine. It's closing its nuclear power stations. It's gone into exporting renewables - including using Australian technology...

CHRIS UHLMANN: And those jobs...

BOB BROWN: It's created 350,000 jobs and a multibillion dollar export industry and Australia- China's going to have as many solar panels by 2020 as the whole world has now, using, again, a mission of technologies, including those from Australia while this country is captivated by the old polluting industries which are making climate change worse.

Now, we can do much better than that. This is a resource rich country. We should follow 37 other countries, take some of the money from those resource riches, put it into a sovereign fund and make sure this country can be educated, wealthy and wise into the future.

CHRIS UHLMANN: We're going to have to leave it there, thank you.

BOB BROWN: Thanks, Chris.

Exactly what carbon neutral means. To me it means Trying to ensure our consumption does not add to the current volume of co2 in the atmosphere. And possibly in time trying to lower that volume.
Maybe i underestimated, maybe the ultimate goal is to totally remove all anthropogenic carbon emissions, but i doubt it.

So you believe china to be sensible then? They are currently/will be trialing carbon trading schemes in various parts of their country.
They have also clearly demonstrated an understanding that they need to alter their practices. In part due to the fact that they have severely depleted and poisoned their country, in part due to the possibility that they may infact be sensible.

I've got no problem with Uhlmann giving Brown "a hard time". I just think he's a denialist front bottoms.

A 'denialist' can also be called a person, like you. Throwing stones can only result in suffering a cracked skull.

Yes but you can't explain why, you just think that science is all lies because people whose politics you share told you that it is all just a big conspiracy and that out there, somewhere, there is evidence that AGW is all lies, yet you're unable to actually present said evidence. Funny that.

CO2 is not the on/off switch for the climate. Many elements and interactions that make up 'climate' are not well understood. Attrributing causation of climate change to human CO2 is simply unprovable at present.

The point that Brown was destroyed, is a little extreme.
The fact that he was shown up as just another disingenuous politician, by refusing to admit to his role in forcing the introduction of the Carbon Tax, was what was the most damaging aspect of his performance, in my view..
If he believes in a Carbon Tax, he should have accepted responsibility, and sought to provide his reasoning for the scheme.

Politics is tough, but we do deserve better, we do deserve some honesty, and I think the disappointment for many is that they thought the greens would be more likely to be honest.
Apparently that is not always going to be the case.

Petition hits ABC for shift to Right

MORE than 1000 people have signed an online petition complaining about the ABC's political coverage, with many saying a tough interview by 7.30 anchor Chris Uhlmann with Greens leader Bob Brown is evidence of a lurch to the Right.
The petition to "get the ABC back to its charter" appeared on a website owned by lobby group GetUp! some weeks ago.

It says the ABC has become a "mouthpiece for political conservatives" and is "a sad version of (Rupert) Murdoch's Fox News".

Many of the signatories say Uhlmann is the problem.

Uhlmann pushed Senator Brown hard on Monday, as to whether he wanted to phase out the coal industry, and how he'd counter the associated loss of jobs, industry, investment, and income, if that were achieved.

Uhlmann told The Australian he "approached Bob Brown the same way I approach any other politician, and that is to try to be devil's advocate.
"I thought I gave him every opportunity to answer the questions, while trying to keep him on the point".

One signatory to the petition said: "Chris Uhlmann interrupted Bob Brown on every question he tried to answer."

Commentators on the OzPolitics blog disagreed, saying: "Bob Brown (was) destroyed by Chris Uhlmann on 7.30." http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/media/petition-hits-abc-for-shift-to-right/story-e6frg996-1226059241013

Has Anyone Used JuLIAR Yet?

As one of Australia’s silent majority, I would like to complain loudly and at length about the ABC and its non-stop diet of leftard propaganda. Although I can’t think of any actual examples of this now that Kerry O’Brien has left, I’m told that regular singalongs of ‘The Internationale’ are not uncommon during Insiders, and can only assume that this ingrained leftardedness is to blame for my very witty tweet combining the phrases ‘JuLIAR’, ‘Stop the Boats’ and ‘smacking left-wing front bottoms’ not getting a run during last week’s Q&A. I’m sure if Phillip Adams had tweeted exactly the same thing it would have been used. Assuming he could tear himself away from his basket-weaving and communism for one moment.

Commentators on the OzPolitics blog disagreed, saying: "Bob Brown (was) destroyed by Chris Uhlmann on 7.30."

Others thought Uhlmann had to go in hard, with one saying: "If the Tudors had listened to this kind of thing (phasing out the coal industry) then England would still be a sheep-infested shithole with a GDP of five sparrow farts and a giant turd."

7.30 executive producer Michael Carey said the program received "a good number" of calls about the interview, "just as we used to do, when Kerry O'Brien did a tough interview".

Uhlmann said viewers "tend to watch an interview with their political goggles on. They see and hear what they want to see and hear. I had a fiery interview with Abbott not so long ago; in tone, they weren't that far apart".

One letter on the 7.30 website said: "Again I found myself irritated by Chris Uhlmann's constant interrupting of his guest. It is not a dialogue, but more an opportunity for Uhlmann to impart his own (predictable) views."

The petition yesterday topped the GetUp! "Hot list of popular topics, with more than 1000 signatures, and 530 comments".

That could be because Brown the Boob refused to answer the actual questions!

It was because Brown did NOT have an answer to the questions once Uhlman pointed out that it was not a journalist from the Australian who was quoted,  but Bob Brown himself writing about the closing down of the coal industry.   It seems the Get Up mob can't seem to get their heads around valid questions.  A case of dishing it out,  but not able to take it.

Another distortion Flyin_B. Along with your hollow quotes from the interview.

Given that your only focus is on attacking the man, can you explain why?

Interesting point. In your view, how did BBrown force the government into introducing a carbon tax?

There are plenty of dead coal mines. If by dead you mean exhausted/unprofitable.

The greens are aiming to remove the need for coal mines.

Making them unprofitable.

Economics.

I do not necessarily agree with green policy in this area, but for someone to misunderstand/misrepresent it so profoundly is laughable.

Anyone who has any doubts about the impacts of human beings on our dynamic planet's natural systems, should spend just a few minutes on Google Maps (or Google Earth)...

Start here: http://maps.google.com.au/maps - then zoom in a few times, around major population centres and regional, rural and outback places alike...

Once you've had a broad overview of each of these areas, zoom further and further in - to the point where the patterns of man-made geometry dominate over the natural topography...

One thing that you will notice, is that most of the native East Coast vegetation has been decimated but that there are still pockets of dense forest - albeit juxtaposed to monocultures, housing developments, industrial precincts and quarries...

Start at Queensland, move through NSW and then focus for a while on Victoria and SA - especially those areas which are at the tail-end of the now-toxic Murray Darling system...

Then move over to WA and back up to the NT...

Be sure to dwell on the scars on the landscape over the 100 to 200-odd km radius around where you currently live...

This incredible amount of damage has been done in less than 250 years by a measly population which has not long risen above 20 million...

Now imagine that repeated across the globe - especially in the more densely-populated so-called 'Western World' - but also in those other places which have become the defacto quarries, foodbowls and factories that provide so much to material 'junk' to support the obscene lifestyles of the individualistic peoples who wantonly consume 20-30 times their fair share of the world's resources...at the enormous expense of current and future generations...

Heh, the post Uhlmann and Murdoch hate interviews hysteria continues...

"In a series of tweets yesterday, Senator Brown's director of media, Marion Rae, attacked members of the Canberra press gallery personally, while also saying newspapers in which her boss appeared and even wrote for were good for soaking up cat pee.

She posted a photograph of The Australian's James Massola, with the caption: "There's a hypertroll outside the window."

Of the ABC's Chris Uhlmann, she said: "Some are born great, some become great and others have talented wives, eh mate?"

Uhlmann's wife is the ALP MP for Canberra, Gai Brodtmann..."

.

Meanwhile, Bob Brown in an attempt to divert attention from the incompetance he showed during the Uhlmann interview...

"Senator Brown himself has tweeted: "I'm enjoying sparking debate about the media's role. It's important for our democracy. Join in!"

.....The intention appears to be to create a more low-to-middle brow Nine Network-lookalike that focuses on car crashes and crime and, in terms of politics, old fashioned adversarialism for its own sake. Look at the rebadged '7.30', which this year cast aside the crumpled but substantial Kerry O'Brien for the rather more marketable Leigh Sales and her sidekick, political correspondent Chris Uhlmann.

It was the latter who this past week trumpeted his 'interview' with Bob Brown, full of warmed over Murdoch talking points, as an accountability exercise. The whole interview (in which Uhlmann hardly let his subject answer a question) was based on a misrepresentation - that Brown wants the coal industry shut down overnight. Responding to criticism by viewers that he had not let Brown get a word in edgeways amid his hysterical interjections, Uhlmann's response was that the Greens leader needed to "harden up" (a phrase that would have sounded appropriate coming out of the mouth of Tony Abbott, a politician much closer to real power and one whom he incidentally had given an armchair ride to in an interview the week before).

The sad truth is the louder journalists thunder from their bully pulpits about accountability and the public's 'right to know', the less savoury are their their real motivations. Scratch a little below the surface and you will find the grandstanding is really about a need to generate hits and ratings or attract eyeballs in an increasingly competitive marketplace. It's about branding themselves as players in the political game. It's about impressing their bosses or their fellow journalists. It almost always has nothing to do with the wider public good. And the most telling evidence of this self-interested pantomime is that journalists themselves cannot bear the slightest scrutiny of their own behaviour without squealing like stuck pigs.

Sad when you can not tell the difference between the  ABC Headlines and Journalistic reporting , and ACA ( or today tonight ) or commerical sensationalistic rubbish in which is the road the ABC seems to be  going down.

The point to this whole topic is Uhlmann showed this in his interview with Brown when he made the question more important than the answer, why?

When did the question become more important than the answer.

hi veg.. long time no see.. trust you are well..

I understand that Getup is haveing a go at the ABC for allowing Uhlmann free reign to ask what questions he liked... they should have vetted him. so to speak..ha,ha, GETUP>. give me a break.

the question wasnt more important than the answer.... the fact was he got no answers.

its easy to turn things around and say they are un fair.. when you see you own side sqirming which is what happened.. but had he done the same to Abbott he would have been a star... and thats the point..its time we had an interviewer who didnt pull punches depending on which party he had sitting in front of him..

Kerry would interrupt a Lib left right and centre make them look real fools who couldnt answer a question...

it wasnt untill the end of his era. that he began to lose patients with his own side and stop them rattling on forever.

which was the case for years..

gillard was famous for giving the same answer to every question..and he let her get away with it..at first..lol..

I for one am happy to see the greens being confronted with their actions and the extent that they are doing harm to this nation..

its been a long time coming but you cant have all that POWER and not have the responsibility that goes with it..

The simple fact of the matter is that Chris Uhlman proved Bob Brown to be a liar and an idiot with no understanding of what is necessary in government.

Hi cods, I could be better, few problems, hence I will copy a reply from a comment that sums up pretty well my answer  ;  ;)

written by Bushfire Bill,
Penberthy doesn’t get it about Uhlmann. It wasn’t the interview questions so much as the rudeness and the hectoring that put people off.

I realise they only have a fixed, limited time to get the interview done, but that doesn’t mean they have to cram a lifetime’s worth of gotchas into 5 minutes.

Not having paid much attention to Brown’s position on the coal industry, I was interested to find out more. Listening to that interview did not achieve that end. All I came away with was a combination angry/frustrated feeling that Uhlmann’s virulent style had wrecked yet another chance to inform the public.

On the most basic level, when two people are talking over each other and the camera’s only on one of them, it’s virtually impossible to comprehend either of the speakers’ words, the one attacking or the one defending.

But Fox News has a stock market program where each raving looney gets a window tiled within the image space. You can see all 9 of them shouting at each other, but that doesn’t work either.

The only solution is to ask questions and then let the interviewee answer them, as Tony Jones did with Malcolm Turnbull. It was a textbook case of polite, but persistent interrogation and how coaxing out an answer from a reluctant interviewee can be achieved.

Smart-arsed gotchas don’t cut it, from either a technical or a social angle, especially from one so un-telegenic as Uhlmann who most definitely has an overly trumped up view of himself as kingmaker, and breaker.

Indeed, the very idea that interviews have to be punchy and aggressive in order to pass as “worthwhile”, that the interviewee is there always to be hoisted on his own petard, hung by his own words in a very public execution, to my mind is wrong. all you end up with from this approach is an interviewer with a certain gift for thinking on his feet ripping to some hapless bod who’s volunteered for the slaughter. Very often (and Red Kerry used to do this a lot, too, towards the end) we see the interviewer pointing fingers, accusing, lecturing and hectoring the poor sod opposite. the interview becomes about the interviewer, not the subject matter at hand.

veggie now you have some idea what the right has complained about for years with Kerry OBriens style... you probably thought he did a good job on them... but when the boots on the other foot its not quite the same... yes let them answer something Kerry never did..only if it was a big gun and then he could still be nasty..

I havent had a good look at Uhlmann yet so cant really say.. however he does like an answer.. not another oh well its the media.. as Uhlmann pointed out he said it....

like it or not brown is trying to turn the media into the vampire.. how dare you ask too hard questions..

he knew he would create a headline and thats what he wanted he didnt want anyone looking too deep into how he reacted...lol..

veg you have to admit.. brown has flown under the radar for so long...

and now he has to face reality... he is having an effect on our everyday lives.. this isnt about a tree or a whale..this is you and me.. it will effect each and everyone of us.. yet with still no evidence that it will change a bloody thing and that annoys me..

if someone was going to cut off both my legs because they thought it would help me to live longer.......

I would appreciate them discussing it with me first.. I think I should have a say in  it.. and if I wish to listen to a second or third opinion... I think I should be able to do that without being cursed into oblivion..

Answer - "The world is going to do that...blah, blah, blah..."  .... ::)
