10,100,000,000

Projected human population in 89 years. At what level can we see humans at plague proportion ... or have we already past it.

Should we introduce a one child policy across the globe ... if not, what solutions can you offer to stem the overpopulation of humans on a very stresses little planet.

kind of ends the argument for a middle class of greedy pigs with their snouts in the public trough doesn't it...we need to end middle class welfare, immoral spending on wars and military arms ect - none of this is sustainable. :)

As for my personal view, I think we require a multi-prong approach. A cross section of my thinking ...

Education
Dismantling religion through directing people towards personal spiritual growth.
Restructure the world economy away from the financial profit model of capitalism towards another model.
Rejig social engineering, like allowing people to choose voluntary euthanasia, end financial payment for people to have babies, etc etc
Shift child raising away from couple and individual and into community raising.
Shift humanity to vegetarianism
and so on

I like your ideas greens, and mother nature seems to be taking care of stemming the population growth.

Maybe with increased natural disasters, food shortage, peak oil, more wars, and the end of capitalism, the population might take care of itself.

Australia has always had a 'minimalistic' approach to population growth.
(wether this is due to our 'consistently' being one the highest, if not the highest 'Suicide Rate' in the World?)
Australia has traditionally had to rely upon IMMIGRATION in order to make its population growth kick tick over. Only recently has Australia experienced a bit of a self-sufficient growth from internal means ...I think it was just by 250,000 - thats all.

So in essence, Australia really does hold the key.
When Australia opens up and has its population suddenly swell to 100 million, you will find that - and only then, will the Rest of the World suddenly drop in its population growth. You could say, the world catches the Australian 'Minimalistic' curse.

Other than this - you could tick off a few boxes for a number of countries. Its no point euthanesian old people unless you want to 'de-culturalise' you nation into stupidity like some Logans Run movie.
One child Policy is probably the most 'humane' way to go about it.
India
China
Mexico
West Africa
Zimbabwe
etc
...are just some of the nations who have more mouths to feed than they can obviously afford. Yes, some Religions are to blame for not allowing contraception and not allowing 'education' that comes with it.

Personally, I don't think anything will be done for 1,000 years.

Actual experiment: 20 rabbits were released into a large, well contained property. Didn't take long for the Rabbit population to swell in numbers and then eventually 'plague' the property with 'over-population'. Then, when sustainability to support such a population dissapeared - the population totally crashed! The end result was only 8 Rabbits left. These 8 Rabbits eventually began to breed again from the 1,000+ that existed, but the population grew slower and steadied at 100 Rabbits with 50+/- flunctuations in accordance to their environment.

The Chinese 'Boom' Economy? Well it will collapse under the weight of its populational demands.

jasign - yes, populations naturally reach a state of equilibrium.
Albeit after some serious problems.

I vote for offering people free sterilisating (esp to dumb people), encouraging single child families, mandatory sterlising to criminals.

This question brings us to the crossroads of humanity.  If we can`t solve this, and many other of our problems humanely, and give ourselves a chance at becoming a civilised race,  we will condemn ourselves to the fact that we are nothing but destrutive savages.

I would suggest that the Global Population may struggle to reach 8 Billion, there is very little chance of it reaching 9 Billion and there's more chance of both John Howard being & Bob Hawke being re-elected as Prime Minister, than there is of reaching 10 Billion!

The answer to over-population has always been an economic one. in first world countries population growth is already zero or less. The rapid increase in the wealth of countries like china and india will also reduce their populations in decades to come. It all changes when children move from being an economic asset (particularly in retirement) to an economic liability (as in the West).

Prosperity and the social welfare that it brings reduces the need for population growth. China has already started a tiny aged pension and this is a better step to population reduction than the one-child policy. Motivation is always better than penalty in such difficult areas.

Economic prosperity and in particular, aged pensions will be the key to curbing population just as it has in the West.

No more assistance for barren folks to realise their 'right' to have kids.

An end to the practice of keeping 100 year old, terminally ill people alive with no hope of recovery or any kind of quality of life.

I voted for a Worldwide One Child Policy.

That would be a nice start.

It's strange that the poorest people who can't feed their children have the most.
Basically - the overpopulation is caused by people who are irresponsible
& bring misery into the world.

There's really not a problem with the population numbers...

Any 'problem' will solve itself in one way or another...

But if we have to choose...I'd vote for cannibalism.....Then we can eat all the whinning dogooders that like to spend their time telling everyone else what to do and what's best for the rest of the world...

Soylent GREENS anyone??

Here in Australia, I would advocate a two child policy (kids do need a brother or sister - helps with their development) with penalties for exceeding the limit in the form of taxes and removal of government assistance etc.

Free sterilisation to all who desire it.

IVF to be used in very limited circumstances.

Compulsory sterilisation for those deemed unable to care for children.

Compulsory sterilisation for certain criminals.

Removal of any government assistance to groups who advocate large families, eg: removing funding for religious schools etc.

Internationally, our foreign aid would be dependant on the recipient introducing a sustainable population policy. In some countries this will be a one child policy, compulsory sterilisation or other methods depending on the extent of the problem in a particular country.

why? our population growth is already at zero and is only increased by immigration.

Maybe bobby, but it's a 'self-solving' problem....either by famine, disease or war...alternatively, there are technological measures that can deal with living space and food production issues...Australia for example uses something less than half of our available land area...other countries don't use all theirs either..

We don't need to think about policies that are unworkable, or based on old sci-fi books or completely stupid pipe dreams, like the poll choices..

Our population growth is zero? Wherever did you get that idea from? Our country is ovepopulated already and  becoming more so each day. We must act now to stablise and eventually reduce our population to a sustainable level.

Here are but two of the many sources on this subject.

Australia isn't 'over-populated', in fact it is 'under-populated'. We have the most 'minimalistic' populational growth in the world consistently athough Finland is currently looking quite 'barren' and devoid of Children - maybe due to a high rate of depression?

The only people who say Australia is 'over-populated' are the ones who will loose 'their' quality of life due to the break-down of the 'Aussie Monopolisation Scheme'. In other words - Political Australia can't cope with an increase, like Political America can.

...something will break. My guess is that "Political Aussie" will collapse as a 'cultural' expression and just end up becoming our 'racial' expression. Look at all the women infesting Parliment House! Pretty soon our Political leader will be the dude with the most concubines, not the most 'power' like the President. Chair sniffin anyone?
Already the Armed Forces are experiencing a major increase in applications due to the 'popularity' of the sex going on. You could say "more action seen with Aust Military".
This is why I think the Art Industry (Computer ...not those wanky Archibald, chardonney-sipping idiots) will 'culturally' lead Australia into the future and run this country with a greater population.
200 million!
;)
