Ramos Horta dents processing centre hopes
Posted 12 minutes ago The Federal Government's plan to build a regional processing centre for asylum seekers in East Timor has suffered another blow, with the country's president saying he does not believe the two countries should hold bilateral talks on the issue. The Australian Government spruiked the processing centre as a solution to the increasing number of asylum seekers arriving in Australian waters, but several politicians in East Timor have opposed the idea. East Timor president Jose Ramos Horta says his country will not engage in bilateral talks with Australia about the issue, saying it needs to be done through multilateral forums instead. Last month's Bali conference on people smuggling did not specifically consider the Federal Government's plan. But it did consider a regional framework for dealing with asylum seekers, and Dr Ramos Horta says he is still open to a regional solution. |

It's intriguing that liberals cry for people to stop coming to Australia by boat... yet are happy when a possible solution (that isn't extreme) is getting roadblocks?? |

Maybe we could give East Timor back to Indonesia.

In fact, I think we ought to stop bothering other countries, and process the asylum seekers on Australian soil.
We act like spoiled brats in trying to "offshore" the facilities. Having said that, I was making a point about the MORAL DEBT that East Timor owes Australia. |

As does Indonesia. If it wasn't for us, they'd be speaking Japanese. They OWE it to us to stop the people-smugglers. |

God I thought I was harsh. That's a tough line Ernie, sure if East Timor was enjoying economic prosperity & services like Australia call the debt in. But when the country is still virtually on the brink of anarchy everyday, stuggling to feed & employ it's people & as Ramos Horta said the refo's would be housed & eat better than 80% of the population it's a recipe for civil unrest just to help Gillard politically. Lucky I can see your tongue firmly wedged in your cheek :P |

The exact point. We don't agree with people smuggling hence we want to do the processing of any boat arrivals offshore. You would think there would be bipartisan support for this considering both parties agree with this policy. Yet, seeing the roadblocks being put up the Liberals are celebrating? You want more onshore processing, do you?? What if they escape at night... and go... walking down the streets? Oh, the anarchy! The policy should be an expanding of our intake and consistent discussion with Indonesia about improving their policies on people smuggling. About time we stepped up and used what power we have in the region, and stop constantly hiding behind the rock. In the end, they want more from us then we want from them, and they need to realise this. |

we are responsible for C hristmas Island it comes under WA .. somehow or other. once they are on aussie soil thats it... we basically do accept responsibility for them thats where it all gets even harder than it is now.. if we do as yousuggest we might as well open the door and be done with it..as we have seen just the mere mention of changing the rules and they flood in by the back door..why bother at all? we have well over 6000 now and counting..dont forget we are paying for everything even the bits they destroy and we have to replace. |

Maybe & maybe not? Norway Budget: revenues: $226.8 billion expenditures: $187 billion (2010 est.) Public debt: 47.7% of GDP (2010 est.) country comparison to the world: 55 49.8% of GDP (2009 est.) Looks like Annual Surplus - YES? And, Debt - YES! So Norway qualifies on one count, but not the other, IF you are only looking at gross Debt. However, Norway also has a "Soveriegn Wealth Fund", which in effect is their Baby Boomer Pension Fund, which stood at some US$525 billion, as the 31/12/2010. So, if you are looking at Norway's "Net Financial Debt/Surplus" position, then Norway has a substantial Surplus, as its National Debt of about 50% of its GDP, which stands around US$440 Billion, is well within its "Soveriegn Wealth Funds" credit position of US$525 Billion Link - https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/no.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Government_Pension_Fund_of_Norway I don't know I would put too much trust in some of those figures (Debt/ GDP), after all, they were produced by the CIA. Finally, I may have to make an apology, as I have been a little harsh, in suggesting that almost all Politicians are worth 2 knobs of goat sh!t. Having now looked at what the Norway Pollies have done, I may need to look further at them, as they may need to be excluded, seeing as to how they may have properly accounted for the Baby Boomer Bust Pension & Health needs. All of which, goes to suggest that it could have & should have been done properly? And, again to give credit where it is due, at least the Libs under Howard did some provisioning in the "Future Fund". However, it is nowhere near sufficient! |
