Key independent MP Tony Windsor has challenged industry leaders to come up with an alternative to the government's proposed carbon tax if they do not like it.

BHP Billiton chief executive Marius Kloppers has warned that Australia's bid to put a price on carbon from next year - before other nations make a similar move - will be a "dead weight" on high-polluting industries.

Mr Kloppers, who this week appeared with Prime Minister Julia Gillard at a Beijing function to launch scholarships, last year backed Australia leading the way on a carbon price.

But he told The Australian newspaper that "in the absence of a global scheme, any carbon taxes you impose on an exported product basically is just dead weight".

Mr Windsor, who is on the cabinet committee developing the carbon price and whose vote in parliament will be crucial to putting it in place, says he is "sick" of industry leaders sending mixed signals.

Mr Windsor said he had met a delegation of BHP officials on Thursday in his Tamworth office.

"I've actually challenged BHP on this particular issue," he told Sky News.

"(I've said to them) 'The message I'm getting is you don't want me to support a carbon tax' and most of them say 'No, that's not the message. We just want something better than the one the government's working on'.

"My challenge to the industry is ... you come up with a scheme and I'm more than happy to take that into the multi-party climate change committee.

"Put up or shut up - and come up with something that's better."

Meanwhile, Ms Gillard - on her way to the royal wedding in London - said business leaders had not raised the issue of a carbon price with her during her east Asian visit.

"I've attended an international business forum for chief executive officers, I've attended a trade dinner, I attended a lunch with senior representatives of state-owned enterprises - huge businesses that have major investments in Australia - and in all of those discussions, no one raised with me carbon pricing in Australia," she said.
The government is seeking to finalise its carbon price legislation in the third quarter of this year, with a fixed price to start on July 1, 2012, followed by an emissions trading scheme in three to five years

you know I dont think anyone knows the right way to go about this..

but I am sick of those on here spouting that other Nations all ready have a CARBON TAX.. and we are not leading anything...

and yet here we have it in black and white... we are trying to lead the rest of the world..just because a few have windmills and solar panels doesnt mean they are changing the climate does it????..

I think its wonderful that we are doing something to harness the wind and the sun even the tide we should have been doing it years ago... however to claim it willl save mand and the planet is what i cant swallow..

but good we are doing it...nothing wrong with cleaning the joint up and being responsible for what we do and using our resources wisely.


however now Windsor want BHP to tell him what to do.... has he told BHP what the govt is going to do?

I would think Windsor would have that many experts at his beck and call that he could ask that very question of..and then make sure the govt does the right thing..as you say No CARBON TAX.. but its too late for that shes a dead goose if she calls that off..

they have bitten off a mighty big chew...ha.. lets ee how they go with it.

I like Tony Abbotts ground breaking solution to climate change, plant more trees and continue to burn more and more fossil fuels pumping ever increasing levels of carbon pollution into the atmosphere.
Im not surprised he keeps distracting the media away from his alternatives to the govts policies   ;D

See, this is the problem with the "party of NO", you have no alternatives beyond "NO". Your messiah has a plan, but none of you weaklings can even bring yourself to endorse it because you KNOW it would cost the tax payer - DIRECTLY, no through marginally higher prices, WAY more than a carbon tax would.

And the reason you have no alternative is because you reject over 400 years of enlightenment values and reject scientific principles because they conflict with your political ideology. Yet neither can you condemn it because that would be making a concession in which has become a zero-sum game of us-against-them. It's not about the issues for you, it's about the game. And you seem quite prepared to sell off your future if it makes you feel like you're winning the game.

Tony Windsor is a true conservative who believes in science over politics and believes that the cheapest, most efficient solution is through the market. Unlike Abbott, your messiah, the neo-national-socialist who believes in a command and control approach to dealing with carbon emissions.

This issue, above and beyond all others, really accentuates the sheer stupidity of the extremist strand that has commandeered the conservative movement over the ten years.

So other than name calling - you have nothing to offer to refute the folly of the Carbon Tax

In fairness to Windsor, he took a carbon tax to his electorate last election, and the one before that.

So Macca, Windsor is actually free to talk on this subject as much as he likes.
