Title: Windsor afraid of Carbon Tax backlash

ONE of the independents Julia Gillard will rely on to get her carbon tax across the line has warned it may never become a reality.

New England MP Tony Windsor today said he would not vote for a package of climate change measures “that does nothing”.

“There is no carbon tax, there may not be a carbon tax,” Mr Windsor told ABC radio this morning.

Mr Windsor said people in his rural NSW electorate were concerned about the lack of detail around the proposed carbon tax.

Climate Change Minister Greg Combet released more details of the government's proposed carbon price yesterday, pledging more than 50 per cent of revenue from the tax would be returned to millions of households and reassuring businesses on the impact of the scheme.

The Prime Minister played down Mr Windsor's comments this morning, describing them as “perfectly consistent with everything he has ever said about pricing carbon”.

“He has said consistently, and I very much respect this, that he would wait to the end and judge the full package,” she said.

Ahead of a visit to his electorate by the government's chief climate change adviser Ross Garnaut today, Mr Windsor said he was happy to work with other members of the multi-party climate change committee, but wouldn't guarantee his support for the carbon tax.

“The Prime Minister doesn't have the numbers as I understand it,” he said.

“When things get into the parliament people have a vote; I have a vote, others do as well. You can never get anything until it gets through a minority parliament,” he said.

“I'm not inclined to vote for something that does nothing if we can get something that does something I'm more than happy to vote for it.”

Ms Gillard said consultations with business, community and environment groups and unions would ensure a balanced package, which the government would present to parliament in the second half of this year.

“What Tony Windsor has said to me and said publicly is that he does believe climate change is real and that we need to tackle it, he does believe that pricing carbon is the best way, an important way of tackling climate change,” she said.

“But for an individual legislative package he's going to look at the package and wait to the end and then judge.”

Big polluters will pay for this tax then pass pass it on to the consumers through higher prices

So the ones who will pay will be the people buying goods and services - who in Australia does not pay for goods and services?

has anyone noticed the decreasing coherence of Prevailing's posts? Bedwetter Bill is at times posting on both sides of an argument with  and insanity that seems to be increasing. And day now he wil stop posting for a few months while he takes yet another enforced 'holiday' in a mental hospital.

sure you can its consistent with the magna carta and protecting the economic freedom of the people'

Quote:
"29. NO Freeman shall be taken or imprisoned, or be disseised of his Freehold, or Liberties, or free Customs, or be outlawed, or exiled, or any other wise destroyed; nor will We not pass upon him, nor condemn him, but by lawful judgment of his Peers, or by the Law of the land. We will sell to no man, we will not deny or defer to any man either Justice or Right.[42]"

Clause 29 (clause 39 in the 1215 charter), a right to due process.

we are just taking what our law is based on - preventing the Aristocracy from economically destroying the common people and enforcing that....Law still in effect today...
:)

Most of the arguments being put against the carbon tax seem to ignore the supply/demand/cost equation...

There are limits to how much corporations can charge for goods and services - especially since wage growth for the majority has been been well and truly outstripped by the double digit profit growth of the past decade or so...not to mention that mortgage and consumer debt is already crippling many households...

At some time, corporations will need to start competing for scarce consumer dollars...

Excellent point!

You can only go as far as your nearest competitor

So if you have no margin left in your profits to absorb costs - the only answer left is shut down or go to another country that does not impose a carbon tax ie we drive industries and jobs out of Australia

Great - more dole bludgers

In regards to competing for scarce consumer dollars - it's going overseas

You refer to "corporations" to make them all look the same - the reality is they are not. They are the small businesses that hire Australians who will suffer

For what?

So you can feel good about doing something for the planet in turn ignoring the fact that it makes no difference to climate change

Socialism is all this is. Redistribution of wealth. It does nothing for global temperatures but it does get the wealth redistributed.

I agree, this whole deal is nothing more than a "bludgers` money grab".

Nonsense, socialism produces eugenics and scientific dictatorship, I am not advocating the philosophy of HG Wells and George Bernard Shaw - clearly I do not advocate the killing of the unfit and poor.  I advocate taking it all off the rich - take it all and redistribute it equally so that all can live a decent life and none a privileged life.  Also the rich should be tightly regulated by Government to curb their criminal activities. :)

""people in his electorate are concerned about the lack of detail""...

funny how all these people turn up to rallies to say they approve of this CARBON TAX.. yet no one knows what the details are... so in other words its a case of the blind following the blind who would vote anyway,

if their beloved leaders said drink this crap its in your best interests....

and we worry about prevailing??????.....hahahahahahaha

when are folks going to get it right and start thinking for themselves instead of taking Getups word for everything.

Dosen't that say the same thing about all those people protesting against a carbon tax and the spin the Liberals are putting on it?

It has to be in incements and this is incremental.

If they vote the way Labor want they are bending over and if the don't they are afraid.

The independants said they would make up their own mind on individual issues, seems to me this may be the case in this one.

Got to love the Lib spin though - Afraid! really.

You guys even hate it when they agree with you, talk about poor winners.

Windsor has always been like that - he makes up his own mind.

true, the unemployed have to get a job but there has to be a new regime of job security and a purging of the old corrupt corporate guard.  The new workforce will not accept the current regime of Corporate criminals in charge, nor will the nation. 8-)
