Title: This is why Labor's Alco-pops tax failed
Post by Maqqa on Apr 3rd, 2011 at 9:10pm
Labor tells us how Alcopops are increasing our children's alcohol consumption. Therefore putting a tax on it will make them drink less

WRONG!!

Children exploring the fire-water have always been around. They will continue to drink regardless of what you do to the alcopops.

More than a dozen teenagers, some as young as 13, have been detained by police after they were found drinking and engaging in anti-social behaviour in the Sydney CBD.

Some parents of the 14 teenagers, who were detained by police after a blitz on Saturday night, had no idea what their children were up to until they were contacted by police.

"A number of parents we spoke to were horrified to learn their kids had lied about their whereabouts and instead of being at the movies or a friend's place, were actually with a group of friends, some drinking alcohol in the city," Detective Inspector Chris Craner said in a release on Sunday.

"It is shocking to see so many unsupervised children wandering the city streets late at night, and worse still, drinking alcohol. The attitude and behaviour of some of these children was appalling and offensive."

Two of the teenage girls will be cautioned for offensive behaviour and malicious damage after a 15-year-old girl kicked and smashed an inside panel of the police command bus.
Although the numbers of children found in the blitz was down from the previous operation, police in partnership with DOCS will continue to run the child at risk operations throughout the year.

What matters is that they don't do it on alcopops. They are bad for your teeth.

well they sure as hell dont care about being caught do they??....in the Sydney CBD.who is selling this stuff to them in the first place?..most outlets for alcohol have cameras up dont they?.. so how hard would it be to track where its bought from.. thats the begining.. we just dont seem to have too much accountability in this country.. what happens when mum and dad come to pick the kids up.. do the kids go to court?..are they charged with a misdemeanor?.like public drinking. drinking underage.

all sorts of things that should require a large FINE if nothing else.

it needs to be brought home that they can be at least humilitated and mum and dad might keep a closer eye on their children if they get a huge fine.

we seem to be making it easier for kids to do this sort of thing..no more hiding in dark alleys smoking and drinking..

Firstly, the evidence is that consumption of alcohol overall has dropped, so maqqa's initial premise is wrong.

Secondly, if, as seems to be argued in the OP, the tax has had no effect, why didn't Howard tax alcopops at the same rate as other alcohols? Why did he choose to subsidise this sector of the industry?
