lol, I could not disagree more(what a surprise) ;D
I like seeing other people's lists, and sometimes even find gems I had not known, or had forgotten.

I however could never even attempt to name 10 favourite songs in order, as I probably have a thousand that I could rotate into those top ten places, and still bemoan the great ones I forgot.

A good, thought provoking question was posed to me once, which was,

"if you had to choose just one singer to listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?"

My immediate response was Van Morrison, because of his range I felt I would have longer before I hated hearing him alone, and on further consideration I have not been able to think of anyone to make me alter that opinion.

I guess for you it would be harder, because the classical scene has some pretty limiting restrictions on their vocalists.

regardless, I find it interesting in the variation as much as the similarity in people's Top 10 (no order).
There is always something I haven't heard/seen before, which is quite refreshing.
I understand the stance with Van Morrisson. I find Gene Pitney holds no specific song for me, but overall - most of his songs I can listen to for ages and to think, he was before my time and I inherited a liking to his talent.
To think last year, I actually got into the Ring for a spar with an Ex-Pro Boxer called Mark "The Liberty" Vallance - I was so glad he took it easy on me a bit, but it was such a thrill.

Well I saw this on TV when I was about 11 or 12, and it blew me away, and for many like me, who saw this strange guy at the end of a 20 minute spree of Monkees TV show inanity, it was transfixing, transformative, and unforgettable.
I don't dislike the mortal coil version, but it is a minor reflection of a live, one take, masterpiece for many.

Impressive eh. I can tell straight up that the Song is definately like a 'National Anthem' to all Musos (though I'm sure its not the only one).
Such a high standing that the Song has and it has a title dedicated to the realm of Music in regards to the words "Song" and "Siren".
Thanks for sharing as I'm sure I will be enriched with such a highly acclaimed song. I like the Cocteau Twins version too. But I know a bit about the CT's as they, like Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance fame) prove that you don't really need the English Language to convey whats needed in Singing (English was really designed for Politically bringing the world together). So their voice tends to 'blend' the words almost emotively to a higher feeling. So yes, I agree - the CT's version does knock the Song up another bar.

Would I be so bold as to guess that, with Stairway to Heaven/ Fade to Grey being very popular 'General Public' choices. Song to the Siren is definately the 'in-house' Musos popular choice ?

Coincidentally the vocalist , Elisabeth Fraser ,  was the vocalist in the Cocteau Twins and was the one who sang my favourite version of "Song to the Siren" as a member of "This Mortal Coil".





This song is one of my all time favourites too.


Making her the singer in TWO of my favourite songs ever , sung some twenty years apart in different bands.

And as an aside , she had an intense relationship with Jeff Buckley (Tim Buckleys son and the singer of ANOTHER of my all time favourite songs "lilac Wine";

I find some of the tracks provoke emotions in me from intense sadness(Vespers Virgin motherof god)  to joy(Dawn Mantra's,Ode to Joy).

I haven't fully refined my ambivalence towards opera - I can't fully enunciate my lack of appreciation, since I have found something in nearly every other form of music.

That said, I wouldn't denigrate opera fans. That would be impolite.

I'm sort of like you Soren, but I prefer the 'modern' version of Instrumental in regards to Ambient-Trance.
I didn't mind New Age, but some of the stuff sounded like something you would play to a bubby over the cot to help it to sleep.
I was a big fan of the ABC Dreamtime program and the Melton FM program years ago.
I have been told that such Music as New Age and Ambient really did strike a $$$Bonanza for the Australian Music Industry during the 90's - even outselling anything done by Australian Rock and Pop efforts. Apparently such a music genre (if thats the right word) exploded across the world for an entire decade and now its having another resurgance.

I don't mind some 'old' Classics and Miserere Mei Deus is my absolute favourite peice as it just goes to show that you don't always need 'instrumentation' to make a beautiful sound. A rare peice indeed.

Just to be a pedant, do excerpts from operas and classical "works" rate as "songs"? In my mind songs are small independent creations, usually for a "normal" singer.

To make such a statement , it seems he is working from the position of belief that all Opera, and Classical music, is always superior to any genre of popular music, or any examples from within those genres.

The opera clip he supplied was laughable for me, because it epitomised everything I dislike about most opera I have heard, as it was both pretentious yet vocally uninspiring, and would have been exactly the type of clip I would have chosen to support my belief that a lot of Opera is utter rubbish.
To me it was the Celine Dion of Opera, or probably more accurately, the Bob Downe of Opera, with the difference with Bob Browne being he knows he is taking the proverbial.

Classical and Opera are NO DIFFERENT to popular music, you sort through a sea of dross, to find little pearls that you love, and anyone who makes statements like Soren did, are no different to the guys who declare that Heavy Metal is the only decent music, and if any view could be considered retarded, it would be one as myopic as that.

If you had wanted to post an Opera clip that most people can relate to, then you should have chosen the following one.
Also, while I love many songs where the singer is not a particularly gifted singer, they manage to create an atmosphere that can still enthrall you, while other people who can sing technically well, leave you cold, and uninspired.
