Title: NBN Co censorship
Post by Guildford on Mar 25th, 2011 at 11:48am
With (eventually) the NBN becoming the main access to the internet how will it deal with illegal downloading of images, software, movies and music.

Will the government of the day leave itself (or NBN Co) open to massive litigation involving it's (the NBN) aiding and abetting a criminal activity.

As I see it, there would be no need for government legislation as NBN Co is for all intents and purposes an arms length organisation in a similar way to Australia Post. NBN Co could just block access to those sites, eg all the Torrent sites, if it felt like it, in the same way ISP's of today could.

I'd be interested to know what others may feel about this, not whether you are for or against censorship but whether NBN Co should have the right, without Government approval to block sites.

Looks like Conroy will get his internet censorship after all.

It probably never occured to the retards that support the NBN that it is possible its very existence is to support the insane and evanglistic censorship regime that Conroy has wanted all along. Knowing he could never get legislation across to forces censorship he puts in place his OWN ISP and the only one able to access the internet. Now it doesnt need legislation. it just needs NBN Co to decide to censor the internet on behalf of the govt. no legislation, no oversight, nothing.

I simply do NOT trust the Govt, and certainly do not trust
Conroy so will be encrypting EVERYTHING I do online.

To Hell with Conroy, and to Hell with censorship.

It doesn't work that way. The NBN is a 'dumb' layer-2 network. It has no idea which sites you are going to, or what data is being sent through. The only people who can filter this traffic is your ISP.

Even if some monitoring system could be set up at the PoI, a simple proxy server and/or https connection blocks any hope of them accessing what you are looking at.

It's no easier or harder to filter the NBN than the existing networks.

I should add, that there is no way Conroy could get a filter running, even if he still wants to (Note that filter funding was removed from the budget this year). Mandatory filtering would require legislation, and legislation requires the support of the ALP + either the Greens or the Coalition. Both of them have stated they oppose the filter.

Yes and much to the distress of the Australian Christian Lobby!   :)

I readily admit to being a technological troglodyte when it comes to the finer points of the NBN and its alleged benefits and disadvantages. However the fact that the Minister in charge of the whole thing wants to censor the Internet says to me that it is not a good idea.

Even Conroy is helpless in this situation.

The mandatory internet filter is IMPOSSIBLE in the current political climate. The Greens hate it, the Opposition hate it, and no doubt the Independents hate it.

Above all else, however, the PUBLIC hates it. Conroy got nothing but jeers whenever he tried to defend it on various T.V shows with audiences that discussed the idea. The filter has been scuttled. The Government just doesn't want to publicly admit it to save themselves explaining a backflip.

The internet can't be blocked so easily.
The offending sites just get new addresses every day
& those new addresses can be sent via email to any account name.
