Title: Tonga hit by 6.1 Quake
Post by frenchyjen70 on Mar 12th, 2011 at 7:06pm
Seems like this has been overlooked
"A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific nation of Tonga this afternoon, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake hit about 230km northeast of Neiafu, Tonga at 2:19pm. It occurred at a depth of 10.9km.

No tsunami alert was immediately posted. Earlier the Met Office in Tonga had reported the island nation had recorded 60-90cm waves as a result of the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake off Japan.

Thousands of people in the capital Nuku'alofa had sought refuge at the King's residence, which was on higher ground, Radio New Zealand reported.

Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific, comprising 176 islands scattered over some 700,000km square."

I heard an interview on abc national, the owner of the coastal hotel, don't know her name or address, but anyway she said the low tide was a little bit higher....no adverse effects.

You do realise that the vast majority of those are aftershocks for just a handful of events?

Ah, yes, quite a few relating to the current situation in Japan.

I think, I realised that, when I read it!

Still, quite a few others, as well!

New Zealand is still getting after shocks, from the quake in September as well as this years one.

How do they tell which after shock originates from September and which  from January/February?

So, you are telling me that they are able to say that the after shock 'just then experienced' has it's genesis from some place other than the one 'just experienced now.'

:D

Yes. They are able to accurately locate the origin of earthquakes. If you check out the listing provided, you'll see the location is described down to a 1000th of a degree.

We are talking about after shocks.

That's what I meant.

The Christchurch earthquakes didn't originate from the same location. So you can tell from the location of the aftershocks which earthquake they're related to.

That's correct, as can be seen in the following example, it provides the Latitude & longitude, down to 1,000th of a degree, plus magnitude, Date, Time, Depth & approimate area of origin.

I'm just making assumptions.

This is the internet. It's not known for its accuracy.

But it does deliver high quality porn, excellent shopping and rather spiffy examples of people's stupidity.

I think you're on the money. That site is really good. I've been using it for years. You can get a graphical presentation of major Earthquakes too:

Well, those assumptions were based upon the level of accuracy for the locations.

Yeah, I agree. Cool site - one I've found myself visiting quite a few times over the years.
