Title: Traditional Values
Post by Greens_Win on Mar 6th, 2011 at 8:05am
Notice posters keep on falling back on this yet what is Australia's Traditional Values?

The White Australia Policy
Women paid less than Men only because of genitalia
Hatred of anyone different.

What are traditional values to you?

They are just the negatives, there were positive aspects of traditional values, your OP is selective and dishonest.

Traditional values have always conjured up so many positive images for me.

In essence I instinctively think of large, pretty and well maintained homes with manicured gardens/decent sized front and back yards in safe neighbourhoods close to good schools and shopping centres .. with hard working dads who come home to loving wives (who pursue hobbies/careers around school hours) and children (who are loved, nurtured/encouraged/supported to do well academically/in sport/music). I see a pet of some description, 2 cars (his/hers) and a weekender (up or down the coast) for family holidays.

Is this so awful?

For me .. all this is a dream waiting to happen.

Agreed Lisa, now women HAVE TO work to pay the bills. Gone forever are the days of spending time with our children throughout their most formative years, ladies tennis or golf days during the week.  Corporate Australia is now effectively getting twice the number of slaves for the same effective price!

YES!!!!

That's right!

My mum and dad were both baby boomers. Back when they 1st married .. you could buy and pay off a decent sized freestanding home on a good block of land within 10 yrs (not 30 yrs like today). This meant my Mum could stay home and HAVE kids and take good care of them. She made sure she grew all our fruit and veges (it was a hobby for her in any event as she was a country gal) because there was SPACE for all that .. and she cooked all our meals with fresh home grown ingredients. Mum was ALWAYS there at the school gate to pick us up every afternoon and bring us home to make sure we were ok. Mum worked school hours which gave her a break from the domestic sphere and gave her a chance to maintain her skills base.

She was always around to supervise us (even when we played in the front or back gardens on the 1/4 acre block of land we had back then) and Mum made sure everything on the domestic front was managed well. Dad came home from work exhausted .. but happy .. knowing all was well and under control.

It's such a pity those days are gone. I kinda miss them.

My mum was a baby boomer. I am a Gen X woman. Wow .. what a difference in just ONE generation.

Which 'Traditional Values' are we talking about here????
Do you mean:
Mateship,
A Fair Go,
Being Neighbourly,
Treating others as you want to be treated??

Or the 'darker ones' like:
Treating migrants like crap,
Refusing to hire non-whites
Refusing to hire women (because they should be bare-foot and pregnant)
Getting drunk and beating up anyone with a different culture, sexual preference or skin colour???

Does anybody remember the Australian movie "Wake in Fright"? It was shot in 1971. It's a reasonably good  portrayal of what life was like back then. If you can find a copy of it, watch it, and you'll appreciate much more what Australia is now compared to what it was.

It starred Gary Bond, Donald Pleasence and Chips Rafferty, and was based in  a fictitious town of Bundayabba (The Yabba) which reminded me of Mount Isa.  The film itself was very well directed.

Cultural cringe alright.

Something reminded me of the Traditional Australian values. I went to an agency of a Medical Insurance company in a small town. Instead of giving me my refund right there and then, they had to mail the forms and they would send a ....cheque in the mail. I asked them why they are still using snailmail in 2011. I mean the post is so unreliable and slow!

Can you believe that in 2011? I thought I was back in 1971 when you had to wait for Monday Morning for the bank to open if you wanted some money. No such thing as ATM's, and even credit cards were regarded with suspicion back then.

Ah yes, the good old days, when life was not meant to be easy.

Yeah that too lol :)

I remember something similar to that for my upbringing, but don't forget that our grandparents did two world wars and a depression, before that was another depression in the late 19th century as well as a massive drought. Things were tough in this country till after WW2 and the wonderful life of the baby boomers and the gen x.y are what has begun to lead use down a sad path.

History has the key to much of who we are, convicts to begin who rose with acts like the rum rebellion, Ureka stock aid and characters like Ned Kelly and Ben Hall. These things taught us to stand together and always be vigilant. Civil disobedience is important to us as has been military disobedience. The Anzacs and western front soldiers of WW1 were renown for ignoring the british officers much to their horror, but when it came to it we stood tight a fought hard as we always had to at home to survive.

As for the White Australia Policy i think this covers it  "The doctrine of the equality of man was never intended to apply to the equality of the Englishman and the Chinaman." A quote from the PM at the time Edmond Barton. Without doing the required digging i believe riots against the chineese on the Victorian gold fields and places like lambing flats in NSW, now known as Young lead to the formation of the policy. Our distrust of people and religions that we didn't understand or feared has always been a scare on our society. The Irish also came in for some special treatment back then. During the 70's and 80's John Howard made many poor comments on immigration and Asia, a problem the liberal party still carries as we see at the moment.

So Aussie Values to me are mateship, defiance of authority, and strong family values that carry us in the hard times. On the sad side is an under tow of racism and a loss of the values that formed the country which now see the degeneration of those family values and mateship. When John howard told us that it was Australian to dob someone in i new the country was in big trouble because they believed him when in the past they would have demonstrated and thrown him out of office at the next election, not given him a bigger majority. In 1901 the two most prosperous countries in the world were Australia and Argentina, i heard an Argentinian professor talking on the subject and he felt it was the hardship this country faced that held it together and see us still the most prosperous while Argentina has fallen. We have now lost this edge and if we are not careful the current generations will kill this country with the success of our parents and their own self indulgence.

Thanks Pansi, It always amazes me how we seem to be able to forget our past unless we want to make a nationalist statement.
It is sad the current generations (including mine) are so easily lead by a media hell bent on sensational coverage and commercialisation.
The truth seems to only be considered in our society when it is convenient.

Lisa,

See if you can find the movie. It really is an eye opener.  We take the technology of today for granted apart from anything else.

We are much much better off now in terms of lifestyle than we were in the 1970's.

(I was pretty young then too LOL)

The White Australia Policy is summarised pretty well here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Australia_policy

Even if you wanted to return to those 'halcyon' days for some reason or other, there is no way that you can, because Australia is now a reasonable mixture of ethnicities, and they all have a vote.

So it remains as just an indelible blot on our past cultural landscape.  It's faintly discernable in the distance as a harsh dry distant pinnacle that some people see as a land of milk and honey, and it's all the more luring because you can't actually get there.

It's a mirage. No more than that.
