Title: Politics of war: another digger killed overnight
Post by Equitist on Feb 20th, 2011 at 10:37am

My thoughts are with the family and other loved ones and friends of this 21 year old digger - but I lament that our LibLab pollies ever put him and his colleagues/comrades in harms way in the first instance...

My thoughts are also with the people of Afghanistan and Iraq, who continue to suffer horrific and grave circumstances on a daily basis, for the political benefit of the fossil fools who continue to fund and fuel their oxymoronic 'War on Terror'...

Hello kettle - glad to see you single me out instead of the serial pot-stirrers on your side of the growing political divide - not!   ::)

I am genuinely sorry and saddened - but weren't you one of those who were vocally blaming Lab policies for the mass-drownings of 'boat people' over the past few days!?  ::)

No matter how much you wish it, you can't get away with not wanting to deal with politics both ways, Cods...

Tragedies like this are a glaring example of how Politicians suck.
Politicians start wars and young men and women fight them.
There was never any need for the Afghan war to go any longer than it needed to grab Bin Laden and when we consider that he died in the early days of the assault we should have got out then.
The objective of the invasion was achieved a long time ago so why are our young people still dying there?

What a sick comment, but this is so typical of the righteous right. They have no morals themselves, yet look for imaginary slights in the posts of their opponents.

We know why this war was instigated and which PM signed off on it. If the occasional thread is dedicated to a digger who lost his life through lies, not only by our own government, but our allies also - it's well deserved regardless of the nasty slant the RW's choose to put on it.

The digger could have been one of our own children being used as cannon fodder to help the multinationals and corrupt politicians become wealthier.

It beats me why!?

At this risk of further-politicising this tragedy, however, I note that there has been no uproar from the right over the questionable and enormous costs (human and nominal) of this ongoing warmongering...

There was much drummed-up outrage over a $300,000 charter flight for incarcerated relatives to attend the tragic funerals of 8 asylum seekers - but ne'er a commensurate word about the multi-billion dollar warmongering effort and senseless loss of diggers' lives that continues to create asylum seekers...

Hypocrite!

Scores of people died on that boat - and people of your ilk had no problem with politicising their funerals at the height of their relatives' grief...

FFS, your lot made the funerals out to be a Muslim issue - despite the fact that 5 of the 8 people who were buried on Tuesday were Xtians!!!

Your lot sought to highlight the dangers of 'leaky boats' as the actual tragedy unfolded (and then cynically-capitalise on this again in the frenzy of confected outrage over costs when they were buried) - how is this much different to using the occasion of a soldier's tragic death to highlight the risks, costs and follies of warmongering under false pretenses!?

PS I made no secret of my agenda in starting this thread - as evidenced by the thread title, I am seeking to highlight the partisan and bigoted hypocrisy that has become rife in this country!  That is also why I started this thread in the political sub-forum, rather than the general boards - and it is doubtless why your lot start so many anti-Islam/Muslim and 'illegals'/'boat people' threads in the same sub-forum!

The tragedy goes further than just 1 person, his family and friends will also suffer in ways most of us will thankfully never know.

I find it hard to fathom that the few deaths in the insulation industry that occured during the Rudd leadership created more of a cry for pollies heads than the  deaths and horrific injury suffered by our armed forces personal in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Where are the far right commentators now or is this young mans life worth less than that of an insulation installer?

The war in Afghanistan has bi-partisan support from both the government and opposition......it is also sanctioned by the U.N.....Getting in will be easier than getting out.....When we look back at what was achieved in Afghanistan and Iraq we can be certain of one thing....it was not worth the cost!!!

over and over and over

the worst part of this is that politicians will go through their script speeches. something like ...

-joe blow was a 'brave soldier, but we must stay the course by sacrificing more young lives to honor this dead soldier's sacrifice.

underlinging message :
we must provoke and fight wars so we can feed the war machine all you tax dollars, while we argue over $5 a week ... and how bad these muslims are ... while Australians are dying for a corrupt Muslim government in Afghanistan.

I'am sure that the politicians and boffins of the UN will not send their Sons and Daughters to fight for even more corrupt governments.

Democracy, is Australia or for that matter the other countries fighting for Democracy in other countries a real Democracy; more likely a "Plutocracy".

When a Premier of Tasmania gets paid $275,000 per annum, which is ten times a retired couples combined pension, that is hardly a Democracy, and besides Tasmania must have a Politician or ex-politician for every ordinary citizens.

What is the connection between a pension and a head of government?
Longweekend58, why do you think people in Egypt and other country rioted.
Mainly because of very unequal distribution in wealth by the rulers of those countries.
Mubarak has been reported as having stacked billions of $ in foreign countries, probably looted from his people; King Farouk did it some 60 years ago.
In the western countries, the rulers cannot get away with such action, so they loot their people in the form of paying themselves as much as they can get away with.
Democracy is in the end, all about wealth, and how it is distributed.

The mods on here are occasionally better than useless - but not often. they need more mods and shock-horror, mods that are actually online more often than occasionally.

IM not sure the connection between a pension and a head of govt and why you think they should be the same... And perhaps you should work on your definition of 'democracy' a little more!

What is the connection between a pension and a head of government?
Longweekend58, why do you think people in Egypt and other country rioted.

To compare the looting of a national treasury to taking a salary of $275K is idiocy.  and your definition of democracy is dead-set wrong. Democracy is about people chooisng their government and having freedoms. NOTHING to do with how wealth is distributed.

Freedom is precious, but of little use when you are hungry and struggling to pay your bills.
Give Australia another 50 years and there might be riots here too.

You are officially an idiot. Please move to the nearest totalitarian regime (there are plenty to choose from) and be the only moron to do so.

You clearly have not the slightest idea what democracy is or freedom for that matter. Has it not occured to you that the RICHEST countries on earth are democracies and that that is no accident? Could it even occur to you that the reason for poverty and inequity is predominantly the LACK of freedom and choice?

longweekend58, you disappoint me. I would have given you credit for more intelligence than you seem to possess.

as a logical point-by-point rebuttal, your posts lacks something. You clearly have zero idea what democracy actually is. It seems you want it to mean 'free stuff' for you and yours.

longweekend; this is what the Dictionaries say about Demcracy.

Democracy : The Australian concise Oxford Dictionary.

Definition:a system of governmentby the whole population; a Nation so governed; “a classless and tolerant form of society”

The Chambers Dictionary:

A state of society characterized by recognition of “equality of rights and privileges” for all people, political, social or legal equality.

Plutocracy.
A government by the wealthy, or society governed by the wealthy, a ruling body or class of such people.

Adj. Pluto-democracy, “a wealth dominated Democracy”

The last would be very descriptive of Australia.
