Title: Amnesty slams Gillard over refugee policies
Post by mellie on Feb 17th, 2011 at 4:15pm
The federal government is backsliding fast on its promise of a humane approach to refugees, Amnesty International says.

Amnesty has slammed the government for its "increasingly ad-hoc" approach to refugee policy and worsening conditions in Australia's overcrowded detention centres.

"Put simply, this government is going backwards on its refugee policy, and fast," Amnesty Australia refugee coordinator Graham Thoms said.

"Rather than delivering the principled and humane approach it has repeatedly promised, we are seeing ill-thought-out announcements and stopgap solutions."

A new agreement that allows Australia to send failed Afghan asylum seekers home against their will was of particular concern, Amnesty said.

The government should introduce laws to ensure protection for Afghans who do not qualify for refugee status but may still be at risk of human rights abuses, it said.

Amnesty also raised concerns about conditions at the Christmas Island and mainland detention centres, currently home to almost 7000 people.

Processing was too slow, medical and mental health services were in short supply and morale was getting worse, it said.

The government should hasten the release of children from detention.

Amnesty reiterated its opposition to Prime Minister Julia Gillard's plan to build a regional refugee processing centre in East Timor.

"These policies are symptoms of a flailing system," Mr Thoms said.

"Unless the current approach is replaced with policies that show strategy, vision, leadership and respect for human rights, the human consequences will be disastrous."

But that is the point, you are advocating the opposition form government, amnesty must have an opinion on opposition policy.

well mellie I dont agree with the way the Libs have handled this this week.. its appalling timing.. talk about hobnailed boots..there was kids involved it shouldnt have been said.I am pretty well ashamed of that... as for the govts handling of the boat people well if they dont do something real soon it willboil over and be impossible to stop.

and the divide will grow in this country and thats even more scary.

I dont have the answers.. but I do know the way these people are coming in through the back door isnt the right way.maybe they need to find a better way for people to get from one country to another speed it up..

I have said all along if I had my way we would make it safer in their country of origin so they can stay and make the country better for everyone..but no one seems to want to go down that street especially the UN..

I dont like Labors adoption of right wing policies when it comes to asylum seekers either but I doubt the Coalitions move to the extreme right on this topic will win them to many fans in Amnesty

Here you go, mel et al Amnesty international opinion on coalition policy.

Quote:
Sharman Stone, the Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship has today called for the government to bring back temporary protection visas for asylum seekers.

John Howard's government brought in temporary protection visas or TPVs in 1999. They were supposed to discourage 'boat people' by restricting the rights they'd be entitled to once they'd arrived, including not being able to bring family members over. It was valid for 36 months and after 30 months they were able to apply for a protection visa.

Amnesty International was strongly opposed to this visa. The organisation argued that it was completely ineffective and caused further trauma to people who had already suffered extended periods of fear and uncertainty.

I only have one handle...though in my experience, it's usually those who accuse others of having them who usually have socks themselves....as though they need to get in first and plant the seed of doubt to deflect others away from their own 'guilty' conscience..online- behaviours.

Look, it's Ok Skip....I realise you need more than one sock to save face sometimes, this and defend your own argument.

Notice how Amnesty never speaks up against the Governments persecution of the Homeless, disabled, mentallym ill and elderly Australians or their mutual obligations war against the Australian poor.   Why is that - unless they are the blood suckers benefiting from the suffering of the marginalized Australians:)

Cods, they are setting the coalition up, well trying to....but what they don't realise is that the more they do this the more tragic it looks, because the public are really in tune with what's happening this time, and can tell you, theres nothing Labor can dish up that will win them the NSW election.

Our states in disgust.

Labors foreign relations minister is now in big-trouble for sending a child back to Christmas Island in tears after having attended the funeral yesterday.

Personally I don't know why those do gooder left wing Amnesty slapnuts would be berating Gillard over her refugee policy for.
She doesn't have one now, although she once did.
She was handed a functioning working policy, and she dumped it for a failed one and to compound the stupidity waited until the issue was out of control before stepping in.
And still she has done nothing.
If you could call what she has now a policy, it would look just like the tatters and strips of shadecloth over a carport blowing loosely in the breeze here in Nth QLD caused by the last cyclone, that I am now looking at.
Yep, that's her policy alright.

Just felt like it?

Or will Labor blame Tony Abbott for this too?
