House Of Lords membership claim ...

Despite the passing of the 1999 House Of Lords Act (which stripped hereditary peers of instant admission to the House Of Lords) Christopher Monckton has claimed that he is "a member of the Upper House of the United Kingdom legislature"
More recently he has claimed that he is a member "without the right to sit or vote"
The House Of Lords themselves state that "Christopher Monckton is not and has never been a Member of the House of Lords. There is no such thing as a 'non-voting' or 'honorary' member."

Nobel Laureate claim ...

Christopher Monckton claims on the website of the Science and Public Policy Institute that:

His contribution to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 - the correction of a table inserted by IPCC bureaucrats that had overstated tenfold the observed contribution of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets to sea-level rise - earned him the status of Nobel Peace Laureate. His Nobel prize pin, made of gold recovered from a physics experiment, was presented to him by the Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, New York, USA
When Christopher Monckton visited Australia in early 2010 he conceeded that it was "it was a joke, a joke" and "never meant to be taken seriously". The Sydney Morning Herald noted that despite this, he had made the same claim with a "straight face" on the Alan Jones show one day prior, and the claim remained on the SPPInstitute website where it can still be found six months later.

Policy work ...

Christopher Monckton worked for the British government between 1982-1986, has previously claimed to be a "chief policy advisor" to former British prime minister Margeret Thatcher, and is frequently introduced as her "chief science advisor" when interviewed by the conservative media.

Christopher Monckton has been quoted as saying "I gave her advice on science as well as other policy from 1982-1986, two years before the IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded", that he was "the only one who knew any science" and that "it was I who – on the prime minister's behalf – kept a weather eye on the official science advisers to the government, from the chief scientific adviser downward".

Bob Ward in the Guardian invesitgated these claims and found them to be false, noting "that this novel and important innovation by Viscount Monckton [bringing a computer to Downing Street and calculating that global warming was, in fact, happening] was not recognised by the current minister for science and universities, David Willetts, who was also a member of the prime minister's policy unit between 1984 and 1986. In 1986, "Two Brains" wrote a prize-winning essay on the role of the unit, but mysteriously omitted to mention Monckton's historic contribution."

That would depend on your perceptions?

Al is quite reasonable reading off his cue cards, but I would think Monckton would win any acting prize and he is very well rehearsed.

Gore would be a fool to take him on, in a debate, as Monckton would have nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Gore just isn't up to that level of acting, whereas Monckton could qualify for an Emmy or Bafta or an Academy Award!

As indicated by his following performance -

Acting? Archetype English aristocrat?  Maybe. I prefer to stick to the science rather than talk about people.

I think he's a "flake"
But then again I can only conclude this on media coverage and gut feeling - never having met him

Title: Re: Christopher Monckton
Post by llogan on Oct 20th, 2010 at 2:44pm
Oh, my, where to begin.

A flake? Was former science advisor to Margaret Thatcher. A regular consultant to the financial markets in the UK and complex modeling and mathematics. Created two mathematic puzzles extremely noted in the UK, one of which took years to solve. He speaks before crowded rooms with hundreds of scientists present who applaud and approve.

In May, Monckton debated climate alarmists at the Oxford Union, which is the top of the food chain for scholarly debate. The liberal student body overwhelmingly voted Monckton the winner. He destroyed the alamists. And this isn't surprising, as there is a question as to whether Monckton has ever lost in a head to head climate science debate. No, it's not because of 'fine acting' but because the alarmists can't go toe to toe with Monckton.

Al Gore won't debate him. Monckton 'not worthy?' Well, if that's so, then Gore could totally remove Monckton from the international scene with just a one-hour debate. Since Gore won't do this, then you can make up your own mind. Also, when the US Congress invited Gore to speak, the surprise co-testifier was to be Monckton. Gore demanded that Monckton not appear or he would take his marbles and go home. The Democratic-controlled Congress disinvited Monckton after he landed in Washington from the UK. Cowards. (Monckton has offered a large prize to Gore's charity of choice for years and taken out full page ads challenging him.)

His claim of earning the Nobel Prize? Sheesh, you're not aware of the inside joke on this and you're just listening to his adversaries. Monckton proved to the IPCC that their data was correct (and in another instance where they caused an abundance of heat energy by moving the factor a decimal point over). The IPCC made a subsequent correction, based on Monckton pointing this out. As the IPCC is now becoming a joke anyway, Monckton's schtick (and yes with a straight face) is to claim that since he 'contributed' to the report, he deservers a prize also. After, he contributed more, directly, than Al Gore or Pachauri! If you've been to his many speeches to scientists, this is a great laugh line but his distractors think he's literal when he repeates this on a talk show.

The whole 'Lord' thing is an ad hominem (if you can't attack his science, attack the man). He is a Viscount. From Wikipedia: A British viscount is addressed in speech as Lord [X]. It's far more complex, his father, peerage, etc.

But to your point of making your mind up based on 'what you read in the press and others say about him,' yes -- he is perhaps the most dangerous man to disrobing alarmists and therefore toady press and alarmists must do all they can to take him down.
