Title: It's all OK
Post by dsmithy70 on Sep 3rd, 2010 at 1:22pm
Well thank god Mr Rudd has finally listened and acted.
The outpouring of grief & outrage by our right leaning friends at his ousting has truly been note worthy.
Fear not good Conservatives Kev's back in the game :)

Quote:
Queensland independent Bob Katter has had his arm twisted "pretty firmly" by former prime minister Kevin Rudd to support Labor.

Mr Katter revealed Mr Rudd had tried to persuade him to back a government led by Julia Gillard, who toppled Mr Rudd in a dramatic coup in June that has been blamed for costing Labor seats in Queensland.

Mr Katter refused to rule out supporting Labor, and praised Mr Rudd's leadership - saying he had never indulged in the sort of vote-buying that former Coalition prime minister John Howard had indulged in to sandbag marginal electorates. ;D ;D

He said Labor and Mr Rudd's support for a National Broadband Network (NBN) and the creation of the national electricity grid were not electorate-buying policies.

But Mr Howard had spent $700 million to build a railway "from nowhere to nowhere" in South Australia to win over voters during his reign. >:(

Mr Rudd was one of the first people to call Mr Katter on election night to congratulate him on retaining his seat of Kennedy, in far north Queensland.

Mr Katter said his 20-point list of priorities was about doing everything he could for rural Australia's survival.

"It's my responsibility to do whatever I can ... to secure the right to survive. That's all I'm asking for," he said.

"Do you deny it to the first Australians, do you deny it to the people living in rural Australia?"

He said there were "no Andrew Wilkies" in his list - referring to Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie, who requested a new hospital for Hobart, but backed Labor despite an "intoxicating" Coalition offer of $1 billion.

His list of conditions includes the scrapping of the resources rent tax, the emissions trading scheme and addressing food security.

While farmers in the United States and Europe were heavily subsidised, Australian farmers were not, he said.

Mr Katter - a vocal opponent of supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles, which he considers rip off Australian farmers - said addressing food security was fundamental to the nation's survival.

But, of the list, which also includes a condition that rural hospitals are run locally, he said: "I'm very proud to say there's no Andrew Wilkies in here."

Mr Katter appeared amused, rather than concerned, by the Coalition's $1 billion offer for a hospital in Mr Wilkie's electorate.

"If one person gets a thousand million, how much do three people get?" he asked.

"I would've thought my demands here were very, very moderate indeed.

"I'm regretting now that this actually doesn't require money from government ... I might redraft tonight."

Mr Katter said he was anxious to be in concert with fellow independents Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott with his decision.

"We may not [agree], at the end of the day, but I'm very anxious and I would be very strongly influenced by the position of my colleagues, as I hope they would be by my position," he said.

The trio want legislation to stop an early poll, which would mean another election could only be called if the independents supported it.

"It's a sign of weakness if you're racing back to the polls every five minutes," Mr Katter said.

He gave both leaders his wishlist yesterday, and Mr Katter said he would have more meetings again today.

after hearing yesterday that the 3 Independents were meeting with mining magnate Andrew Forest.( which by the way I ask why ? Does he run the counrty now also???.)  And Presumably they would  also have a chat to the head of the ACTU then  , which i havent seen or maybe I missed that.

Anyway- I honestly wondered after that meeting   they would   presumably side with the Liberals. Nice to know otherwise if this is the case....

dont know about you woody but I object very strongly to 3 maybe 4 people running the country.. Bob Katter can anyone seriously see him agreeing with anyone??..sorry this is a joke.. 99% of the popluation had never heard of these guys and now they are having Bangladesh style Flea Market bargaining... to come to the party.. when you aint got a party..

give me a break.  Poker Machines  top priority.. a smart card,, yeah right of course people cant swap machines can they..maybe instead of playing the 20cent poker machine they will try the blackjack table where they are not told what they can bet..its kids stuff....its like the education revolution... they build school canteens over again.. I am still working out how that is an education revolution..

anyway if anyone can fix this mess its Labor they got us into it after all and if Gillard coseies up one more time with the so called independents I will be violently sick.... ooooooooo here comes every sentence starting with the words Rural Australia... well it makes a change from working families..moving forward..

When you consider that the Liberal Party has rarely got anywhere near enough votes to govern in its own right its a tad strange to hear rusted on Liberal voters complaining about a Labor minority govt.
The Libs got less than a third of the seats in the new parliament and if the Nats spit the dummy on them because of the riches they have been throwing at the hated National Independents then they are doomed for a very long time  :)

A coalition secured the primary vote, meaning more people voted for Tony Abbott than Julia Gillard in this 2010 election, he out performed Gillard by far as Australia's preferred PM.

Liberal are still ahead votes wise.

:)
.....With another 9% of votes yet to be counted could Libs swing in Corangamite?

I think it might.
8-)..Might just still be possible...

Just asking is all.

Why a New Thread on this?  Are there not already plenty of Threads about the goings on of the the Independants?

Yes there are Aussie. It's hard for some of us "oldies" to keep up with so many threads. You go away from the board for a few hours and then come back to find your last post is on Page 3 - that's if you can remember what thread you posted it in.

No, Tony Abbott did not secure the primary vote - as should be abundantly clear from the preferred PM opinion polls and associated dis/approval ratings!

In fact, only a fraction of voters switched from the Labs to the Libs and not much more than that switched to the Coalition...

Actually, didn't the Nats receive a more impressive swing than the Libs - they certainly gained some seats!?

BTW, the most pronounced swing in this election was from the LibLabs to the Greens - because the majority of swinging voters trusted them to hold the balance of power (as is especially evident in the Senate)!

The Abbott bigot did not get a mandate to lead the nation - and the Lib powermongers ought to have appreciated why he was totally unpalatable to a significant proportion of Australians who consistently disapproved of him in the pre-election opinion polls (and since!)!

Stop using the Socialist Alliance / Green agit prop websites as your guide to life. Here's the latest from the AEC:

Fact, more people voted for a Coalition than did an ALP....(minus the Greens preferences of course)...as per their primary vote, yes?

Also.....

Quote:
When it became clear it would be a hung parliament, Julia Gillard said that the two-party-preferred vote should decide which party would get the independents' support.
....
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/coalition-retakes-two-party-preferred-vote-lead/story-fn59niix-1225912504954

Though when she said this, she had the two-party preferred lead.  Things have since changed.

Now, Tony has the two-party preferred lead yet nothings being said about this in our media.

Personally, I don't think the Independents should be deciding who they should support until every last vote has been counted, because guaranteed, Gillard is intentionally stalling the vote-count in key-electorates, saving Abbott's best till last.

Equ, you need to research more thoroughly. :)

Are you mathematically-challenged or are you just a moron? coalition had 77% vote against them as opposed to labors 62% against them.

If that doesnt convince you (and it should) then look at the 2PP where MORE people voted against labor than against the coalition.

Try again, but try being sober next time or 'ring a friend' for the right answer.

Well, as per Gillards own recommendation, all three should be supporting Abbott right now, on account of her belief that the two-party-preferred vote should decide which party would get the independents' support.....  only she said this at a time when the ALP had the two-party preferred vote the silly chook.
::)
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/coalition-retakes-two-party-preferred-vote-lead/story-fn59niix-1225912504954
All independents should disclose their wish-lists to the public.... those they are supposed to be representing, this and should wait until all the votes are counted before making their final decision, as the outcome may surprise even them.

One can never tell.

Our media are biased, are reporting Abbots negatives, and Gillards positives...  ie, aren't mentioning how Abbott's crept forward with the two-party preferred vote recently.

How could you miss seeing Hockey in thats 2 days sweating his brow off while being interviewed on  Costing-gate.

I also note it is being circulated in the media hints that IF their costing blunder was brought OUT before the election the close coalition win in the seats may have seen labor win them.

I also still question- How come mining magnateslLike Andrew F.  shopuld  have meetings with the independents, When are THEY or he part of our governance ?

I also question howa 4 backroom personnel in the Labor movement can decide to get rid of a Prime Minister and install another -  only one of them had the courage to face the electorate, when were  they all given the right to govern  ?.
