Labor will form government with the Greens/Wilkes. This means they are buggered. They will have to go left and that will be the end of them.
After the next election we will have another 12 years of conservative government.

In some ways, it might be better if the Abbott Libs form a minority lame duck govt - and get another chance to show their true colours before calling a DD election...

If Labor forms a minority government, they will be buggered by their coalition partnets, constantly pushing them to the left.

If the Libs form a minority government, they will win the next one outright.

After tonight's interim election results, I can neither agree nor disagree with you on that - I shall await some more results and Sunday political commentary before I form an opinion...

Soren's prediction looks the most likely, but the truth is that we may not know who will form a government for a week or more, with so many seats going down to very, very small margins.

One panelist on 9 made the comment that if we see a minority government formed we may see a more civilised atmosphere develop in our political system, and I must say that after seeing the plethora of extremist views expressed in this forum recently, that would be a good change to witness.

It is still possible Labor may hold on to win enough seats on it's own, but a Labor government supported by the Greens is more likely.

If that happens it will produce the best government we could have, because we will then see a real policy to address climate change developed, and we will also see Labor step back from their copying of Abbott's sick xenophobic policies against refugees, and a return to a caring government not ashamed to show compassion to those most in need.

Go Greens, you did awesomely well.

I hope the Libs just keep drifting further right until they make themselves as electiorally unpalatable as their coalition partners, the Nationals.

This is fantastic news.

I spent this morning at a polling booth handing out how to vote LNP cards and the dissatisfaction with the GALP was palpable.

It translated to the tally nationwide.

Now, though this will take years to put right, we can start to make life better for ordinary Australians.

If this happens, it will be a wipeout for Labor/Greens at the next election. It will be 1975 without the dismissal.

Mozz, labelling concerns about boats as xenophobic is a recipe for electoral disaster for the Left. There is much less resistance to orderlty migration for Australia's benefit than to hundreds of boatloads a year of undocumented people who can obviously afford thousans of dollars to bypass the orderly immigraion process.

To trumpet that those who can tell the difference between migration and people smuggling are xenophobic is malicious and stupid. Don't go that way.

Isn't the Government formed in the House of Reps????

If so, what difference does 1 Greens rep make??

hahahaha nope, a labor/indy minority government will be the result.

The Rudd/Gillard govt was competent: we have 5% unemployment compared to double/treble that elsewhere.

The NBN will be built and transform the economy.

An ETS will also be introduced—negotiated between Labor & Coalition. the MRRT will also go ahead, negotiated Labor-Greens (in Senate.) thus everyone will be enmeshed and share responsibility with Labor seen as a clear leader.

just as well Labor will still be the govt, anyone seriously want the endorphin addict Abbott and the buffoon Hockey controlling the economy when the Long Depression clamps down worldwide? Seriously?

I think you're right. It looks like Labor's days are numbered. They've reached a point of no return, popularity wise.

The Libs have to stuff-up big time to see them lose the next election.

I doubt we'll see a move to the left though. The current Labor cabinet is quite conservative, Gillard included. I doubt the Greens will get their way - many of the independants are Nationals.

What we're more likely to see is nothing happening for 3 years - and by nothing, I mean nothing. The Greens and Independants won't like Labor's assylum-seeker policies. Gillard's already put off the ETS. Broadband rollout is about all that will get up.

These are the flagship policies, however. Quietly, other things might get through. But with so many independants, initiatives will leak. This fact alone will make governing very difficult, and politically, I doubt very much that Labor will survive it.

They will need a miracle next time round.

Sorry Vanessa - the people have spoken and removed the majority enjoyed by the Labor after ONE TERM.

You know why?

Because we are in debt, because we have waves of shyte people coming over on boats, because a lot of us are paying more in tax and have had our benefits cut, because Labor have made a right old mess of things.

Don't just ask me - have a look at the election result. A wipe out of the Labor vote.

In just one term too......

Well done Tony Abbott.

What if we just tax the most important industry in the country more and just hand out free money so you can pay it back that way?

That seems to be an 'economically sensible' way to do things if you ask some....

The "natural order," eh? You seem to think debt is something outside of nature, but Australia has nearly always had a deficit, as have most countries - and now more than ever.

Just as most families have debts called mortgages.

And as for stopping "shyte" people coming in - how do you do that? People's shytness is not on the immigration criteria, and Abbott's not planning on stopping immigration to Australia - or, for that matter, stopping "shyte" people from having babies.

You're right though: Abbott has done an amazing job of getting the Libs up to forming a government after one term. But it's built on a mirage. The issues the Libs championed have nothing to do with anything. This election has, essentially, been about nothing.

We might as well have just focused on Brad and Ange's latest spat, or LiLo's stint in rehab.

Meanwhile, the world grows and the temperature rises. And we sit in Australia, fiddling over a few thousand "shyte" people.

It's not Labor that needs to go, it's the fantasies of the Australian electorate. If Abbott gets in, I guess, we've earned him.
