Title: My tribute to Newtown Post by athos on Aug 15th, 2010 at 11:38am
Congratulations Newtown, Sydney should be proud of you
Only place in the western world where McDonald couldn't sell its crap Heroic Newtown Sydney suburb Newtown is maybe the only place in the world where McDonald restaurant couldn’t survive competition and had to close down. Lovely colorful cosmopolitan place full of young people with alternative cultures, restaurants with the cuisine from all around the world. When you are in Newtown you feel free and cleansed from boring middle class suburbs, yuppiesm, consumerism and other crap isms of corporate shopping society. Once you visit Newtown you have to hate the legacy of John Howard and his artificial elitist liberals. What a lovely place Eric White wrote about Newtown "My partner and I are from London and we stayed in Newtown a few months back at a great B&B called Ardmore House.Across the road was a great pub called The Carlisle Castle. The food in the Bistro is fantastic. We also loved King Street with its amazing array of restaurants. A great Vietnamese called Than Binh or something like that Awesome. The guys at Ardmore House can point you in the right direction for almost everything in Sydney.Fantastic experience, cant wait to go back" Marianne Smith wrote about Newtown "I love this place above most in Sydney. its totally buzzing with a quiet energy (sometimes not so subtle!) what an amazing city, what an amazing suburb. i`m `greenie-left` and i feel at home in the mix of free culture here. and by culture, i mean distinctly Australian in every sense (the whole panorama of its history from the start till right now). see it on foot and have time on your hands. be prepared to linger". http://www.sydneymate.com/travel_sydney_australia/suburbs/Newtown/sydney_picture_9.htm |

No, from memory, there was another town in Italy, where their nations poorest government school children are believed to eat better than Americas wealthiest college students at their schools cafeterias.
The MacDonalds restaurant lasted for 3 months then went out of business, the community shunned it, wanted absolutely nothing to do with it and argued their food tasted much better. Refer to Jamies great Italian escape.(Jamie Oliver) :) |

In Newtown you can get beautiful healthy food in Thai restaurant, prepared on the spot, for $6 at lunch time. Newtown is a jewel of Sydney. I think the government should impose special tax on McDonalds and other junk food the same as they tax alcohol and cigarettes. |
