Abbott is going to stop the boats with asylum seekers on them by sending the boats to Nauru.
Can any of you Liberals tell us what Abbott is going to do with the asylum seekers that are on the boats once they have been process, will he let them into Australia as refugees. If he does let asylum seekers in as refugees would it not be cheaper to process them in Australia instead of giving money to Nauru. It looks like to me that Abbott is trying to play the race card like Howard did :-[ :'( |

These people arrive in this country 'illegally' and have broken our laws before having even got here.
Meanwhile, there are needy people desperately waiting in queue going through the appropriate channels simply because these individuals have the means to purchase their way to the top of the queue. It's a back-door that must be closed. End of story. If they want to immigrate to Australia, then they should at least demonstrate their willingness to adhere to our laws. 8-) |

They could fly the boaties straight back to a refugee camp in their region.
Whether you think we should take in refugees or not, the idea that we accept people who attempt to circumvent our immigration procedures is hard to defend. |

Timor are recognised by the UNHCR? but Nauru is not, therefore no refugee sent to Nauru will be accepted by other countries as a refugee.
In other words under Abbotts plan, any refugee found to be genuine, about 97.8% of them, that makes it to Australia and is sent to Nauru will return to Australia as a refugee. Its a pretty good plan really. |

For starters, most people would prefer a positive, fair, compassionate, inclusive and honourable Govt - over a negative, elitist, nasty, petty, bigoted, draconian and dishonest alternative... |

It's really not much of a race card is it. Even John Howards government in the year he sent the smugglers out of business took in 13,000 migrants and refugees who came to Australia via plane and a legal visa. That was the year Howards policy reduced the smugglers to three boats in a year. No, that's a very poor race card. In fact, this really has nothing to do with race. And everything to do with the government not supporting the criminal enterprises of foreign gangs. Whether it's smuggling people who have lived and worked in Indonesia for five years who now claim they are fleeing from 'persecution' in a third country, or smuggling sex slaves, or smuggling drugs is all the same. They are all illegal activities, and the government has a duty to stop these activities when they occur. When Nauru becomes a UN signatory to the Refugee Convention, these economic refugees will be sorted and repatiated by the UN, and they will get in the line with all those behind razor wire in Africa waithing for a new home. And as for processing them in Australia, we have already done that merry dance, and learnt the lessons. Overseas processing is the best and cheapest option. |

Boats people are illegal terrorist, very bad for the countryside. We must put them in a jail. No paper, no English, no money. Many are tinted like the dark. How can Australi let in the porr peoples?
Australi let us all rejoice - land of free. Good soil. We must rejoice by putting the dark peoples in the jail. These peoples are bad for the country. My wife is frightened to walk down street even in burqa. |

Its a piss poor policy when it depends on a country who is not UNHCR recognised being the crust of the policy. You can shout from the roof tops that they'll sign it, but as it is its a non event. In fact if Labor win the election Nauru wont even bother. |

It doesn't matter if Labor or Liberal do it, its still bad policy, in fact it cant even be policy until Nauru signs and is accepted.

As far as Im concerned the boats is a non issue.
If they have the guts and determination to travel thousands of kms in a boat I wouldnt go out on a still lake in, then they have the guts and determination that should be admired by Aussies. We say we root for the underdog and the battler. Lets apply that without predijuce. |

You and others seem to be sounding a little shrill today sprint, whats up Gillard's performance last night got you rattled? The thought of Tone thinking on his feet next week causing sweaty palms? I'd be worried if I wanted Abbot to win, but then if Turnbull was still around you'd be sitting about 10 points ahead in prefered PM and & 60 to 40 in 2pp & just counting down the days. |

Sorry Smithy but I have to seriously disagree buy making the following points; - Liberal under Turnbull was well behind in the polls. - Turnbull was miles behind also. - Turnbull was going to give Rudd his ETS. - Abbotts challange to overthrow Turnbull was based on an anti-ETS stance. - Abbott blocked the ETS. - And again. - This lead to the ALP not taking it DD trigger. - ALP drops ETS, huge voter backlash. It was that backlash that gave the Libs a sniff. If Rudd got his ETS he would still be in the chair and the ALP would have made a lot of extra seats comes this election. Thats my take anyway. |

Your take is very much like my own only I believe that if Turnbull was still leader when Rudd went to water we'd have my predicted senario. But its all really hypothetical because we'd have an ETS if Turnbull defeated Abbott & Rudd would still be PM & well ahead in the polls. Then again has any done a poll since Labor dumped the ETS between Gillard/Abbott/Turnbull that's a result I'd be very interested to see. Basically I'm just a Turnbull/Liberal tragic who is pining for his parties return from this foolish ultra conservative experiment :( |
