Tony Abbott's a runner, swimmer and cyclist.

Now the Labor candidate running against him in the seat of Warringah wants to try him out in the ring.

Hugh Zochling has challenged the opposition leader to a charity boxing match, staged in the electorate, to raise awareness for Homeless Persons Week.

"Really action is needed fast ... we can't treat homelessness as someone's else's problem," he said in a statement on Friday.

Mr Zochling has pledged $1000 of his campaign funds to a local charity fighting homelessness if Mr Abbott - a former Oxford Blue in boxing - agrees to the challenge and matches the pledge.

He is also calling on local businesses to support the proposed event.

"Tony Abbott needs to show leadership in this area," said the university lecturer and father of three.

But Mr Zochling admitted the match - which would be three rounds at two minutes each - was a long shot.

"Tony has been doing a lot of blocking and weaving lately, and will probably block this challenge too ...

"Perhaps a few jabs will bring him to his senses."

Mr Zochling contested the seat of Warringah at the 2007 federal election but Mr Abbott got more than 54 per cent of the primary vote and didn't require preferences to win the seat.

LOL ALL of the political parties have been funded, at one time or another, by the tobacco companies, the petrol companies, and big business.....

It's not any sort of surprise......

The Liberals are NOT behind the campaign as has been reported many times in the last two days.

Posted by: 2ue | 4 August, 2010 - 10:47 AM

Advisors to the Liberal Party deny they are behind an anti-Labor campaign being funded by the tobacco industry.

A group calling itself the "Alliance of Australian Retailers" is launching a five-million dollar campaign, against Labor’s proposed laws, for plain-packaging of cigarettes.

Market Research company Crosby-Textor which advises the Liberals has rejected reports it is also advising the retailers.

Have Crosby-Textor formally and diligently investigated and publicly ruled-out any of its employees or associates moonlighting!?

If there is no truth in the allegations, then surely Crosby-Textor would be able to seek some kind of injunction and/or damages!?

If they do not take any such action, then can we not safely assume that there is some truth behind the claims!?

Sheryle Moon's newly-registered Alliance of Australian Retailers is the group reportedly receiving $5 million from big tobacco. A newspaper and TV campaign rolls out from tomorrow.

The group receives media advice from a recently-established public relations and lobbying firm called the Civic Group. Civic directors include Andres Puig, a former Victoria ALP state secretary, and Jason Aldworth, an aspiring Liberal candidate and former director of Crosby Textor, the market research and polling company which advises the Liberal Party.

Today, Crosby Textor issued a statement denying any involvement in the campaign against proposed laws on plain packaging for tobacco.

If Labor does get a second term,  heaven only knows how long it will take the Libs to get us back into any kind of normality, when they are elected in 4 years time.  And they will,  in fact Labor will be gone for a very long time after that.

Labor and the Greens will absolutely destroy this country -

It looks like you all want to learn the hard way.

If that is the link you are referring to I stand by those comments 100%,  just wait and see.

As for the highlighting of my last post,  you didn't finish highlighting.

Like Tony Abbott and millions of other Australians I go to the gym, cycle, swim and go running, the difference between millions of Australians who take  fitness and a healthy lifestyle seriously and Tony Abbott is he supports the pushers of death, addiction and misery in the tobacco companies and the pushers of sweet alcoholic drinks to our youth. Tony Abbott is as dodgy as a two bob watch and would happily accept money from the devil himself if it helped him get re elected  :)

Abbott is being managed very carefully, its like muzzling a pit bull.  He has the look of a a bloke who is having trouble with his media grabs of late. The carefully manicured look, the nice sound bites.

The media want to see the libs get up. They want to be the ones who told you first.  The media see themselves as integral to the campaign, not reporting it but making it for the nightly consumption, irrespective of its voracity and its content

Is this the media reporting or the manufacturing our daily election news? manufacturing it can't help itself!

I didn't here you lot complaining when Kev07 was given a free ride from the media. I just took the media that long to wake up to what Labor is really like.

The young journos had never experienced how useless and wasteful labor are. They are kicking themselves now
