Gesture politics. I blame the people who suck it up. Politicians talk shite because they know that there are enough people who are positively  gasping to hear shite.

My definition of political shite? Over-reaching and overstating. Howard over-reached with workchoices. Rudd is overreaching with with almost everything he says. He is gesticulating.
Keating, for example, wasn't. Hawke was. Howard mixed it in occasionally but on the whole he was thankfully suburban not to o it too much.


Sustainable, renewable, clear energy - there's a motherhood statement nobody could oppose.  But the overreachers have to let the ferals and the ideological bolshevics and the perpetual resenters in on the action and so it is all buggered up.
