Title: Brisbane to get underground rail

FUTURE RAIL CONNECTION IN STUDY’S SIGHTS

Brisbane’s rail network could be connected by a massive underground tunnel and major new stations under proposals being looked at in a new State Government study.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas said the study would help determine how the city could manage the massive growth in public transport demand.

Underground shops 'could fund new Brisbane rail tunnel'

Brisbane commuters may have access to underground shops once a planned new 19km cross-river rail project is completed, Premier Anna Bligh says.

The state government today announced it was planning to build an $8 billion underground rail tunnel from near Woolloongabba under the Brisbane CBD to Bowen Hills.

The premier made the announcement as part of the Cross River Rail study, which aims to find a new north-south connection in the inner-city.

A 19km proposed corridor would include a tunnel under the Brisbane River and new stations, running from Salisbury, in Brisbane's south, to Wooloowin, in the north, via Woolloongabba, the CBD and Bowen Hills.

Demand for inner Brisbane rail services is tipped to jump from 59 - for the current morning peak hour - to 92 by 2016.

That number is predicted to climb to 141 by 2026, a demand that cannot be met by existing rail lines and stations, the Cross River Rail study found.

Ms Bligh said the private sector could help fund the project and open underground shops for commuters.

This is definitely exciting. It's interesting -- and a good thing -- that Brisbane's public transportation network is projected to become so well-utilized.

lemminglike thinking.
think out of the box and think green

Brisso does not need MORE trains.
the trains are jam packed.
brisso needs fewer people.

Do you mean fewer people like Kampuchea and Rwanda?

I think more public transport is probably more palatable.

OK, so call me a progressive.

dread word, 'progressive'  It implies that people know what they are progressing to. But they don't have the foggiest.

I don't know Brisbane well enough but if there is sufficient population density along the route and if it's long enough, then it's better than anything onm the surface.

It's not that the glass is half-full nor half-empty... It's just that the glass is too small.

helian - there is too much water.
noone here wants this amount of water, and ruddy says "tip in more."

get rid of the excess water, keep only the best, stop any more water getting in.
the place will be 100% better.

Maybe we could take a tip from the new testament. Let's say we have a census and send everybody back to where they were born, you know, so the census is "accurate". Then once the foreign bastards have buggered off to wherever they came, we enact some friggin law that stops the front bottoms from coming back! How's that for a plan. ;D

And you thought you'd get away it... Suspend citizenship of former foreign immigrants and force them to relocate to their country of birth. Return non-Queensland born Australian citizens to their state of origin. And off we go.
