Title: Cooling not warming... Post by Grendel on Apr 7th, 2009 at 9:54am
WORLD IS COOLING NOT WARMING SAYS EXPERT
from News Weekly (National Civic Council) http://newsweekly.com.au/articles/2009apr04_e.html The Earth passed its global warming peak some years ago and is now in a 30-year cooling phase, a prominent American earth scientist, Emeritus Professor Don Easterbrook, has concluded. Professor Easterbrook's findings were published by the Center for Research on Globalization, an American research organisation based in California. He said that despite the fact that there had been no overall warming of the Earth for the past 10 years - and some places had experienced record-breaking cold temperatures in 2007-8 - the Intergovernmental Panel on Climatic Change (IPCC) and computer modellers who believe that CO2 is the cause of global warming still predict the Earth is in store for catastrophic warming this century. IPCC computer models have predicted global warming of 1° F per decade and 5-6° C (10-11° F) by 2100, which would seriously affect human life, the natural habitat, energy and water resources, and food production. All of this is predicated on the assumption that global warming is caused by increasing atmospheric CO2. pt1 |

pt2
Historical record However, the historical record of alternate cooling and warming suggests a very different future. Said Easterbrook: "Rather than drastic global warming at a rate of 0.5°C (1°F) per decade, historic records of past natural cycles suggest global cooling for the first several decades of the 21st century to about 2030, followed by global warming from about 2030 to about 2060, and renewed global cooling from 2060 to 2090." Professor Easterbrook said that climatic fluctuations over the past few hundred years showed regular alternate cycles of warming and cooling, each lasting about 30 years. On the basis of ice core data, he said global climate changes have been far more intense (12 to 20 times as intense in some cases) than those of the past century, and they took place in as little as 20-100 years. "Global warming of the past century (0.8° C) is virtually insignificant when compared to the magnitude of at least 10 global climate changes in the past 15,000 years," he said. None of these sudden global climate changes could possibly have been caused by human CO2 input to the atmosphere because they all took place long before anthropogenic CO2 emissions began. Professor Easterbrook said that after several decades of studying alpine glacier fluctuations in the North Cascade Range in the state of Washington, "My research showed a distinct pattern of glacial advances and retreats (the Glacial Decadal Oscillation, GDO) that correlated well with climate records. In 1992, Dr Nathan Mantua published the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) curve showing warming and cooling of the Pacific Ocean that correlated remarkably well with glacial fluctuations. According to Easterbrook: "Both the GDA and the PDO matched global temperature records and were obviously related. All but the latest 30 years of changes occurred prior to significant CO2 emissions, so they were clearly unrelated to atmospheric CO2." Using the pattern established for the past several hundred years, in 1998 he projected the temperature curve for the past century into the next century. He said: "At that time, the projected curve indicated global cooling beginning about 2005 ± 3-5 years until about 2030, then renewed warming from about 2030 to about 2060 (unrelated to CO2 - just continuation of the natural cycle), then another cool period from about 2060 to about 2090. This was admittedly an approximation, but it was radically different from the 1° F per decade warming called for by the IPCC. Because the prediction was so different from the IPCC prediction, time would obviously show which projection was ultimately correct." He added, "Now a decade later, the global climate has not warmed 1° F as forecast by the IPCC, but cooled slightly until 2007-08 when global temperatures turned sharply downward. "In 2008, NASA satellite imagery confirmed that the Pacific Ocean had switched from the warm mode it had been in since 1977 to its cool mode, similar to that of the 1945-1977 global cooling period. The shift strongly suggests that the next several decades will be cooler, not warmer as predicted by the IPCC." Professor Easterbrook said that the consequences of climate cooling could be severe. "The ramifications of the global cooling cycle for the next 30 years are far-reaching - e.g., failure of crops in critical agricultural areas (it's already happening this year), increasing energy demands, transportation difficulties, and habitat change. "All this during which global population will increase from six billion to about 9 billion. The real danger in spending trillions of dollars trying to reduce atmospheric CO2 is that little will be left to deal with the very real problems engendered by global cooling." He concluded: "Global warming (i.e., the warming since 1977) is over. The minute increase of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere (0.008 per cent) was not the cause of the warming - it was a continuation of natural cycles that occurred over the past 500 years. "The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling, perhaps much deeper than the global cooling from about 1945 to 1977. Just how much cooler the global climate will be during this cool cycle is uncertain. "Recent solar changes suggest that it could be fairly severe, perhaps more like the 1880 to 1915 cool cycle than the more moderate 1945-1977 cool cycle. A more drastic cooling, similar to that during the Dalton and Maunder minimums could plunge the Earth into another Little Ice Age, but only time will tell if that is likely." - Peter Westmore (President, NCC) |

Grendel, it has been pointed out to you so many times before, that the skeptics analogous contention that GW will be like a heating oven, with each day/week/month/year?, hotter than the one before, is not, and never has been the contention of real scientists.
Of course the same factors which have caused weather fluctuations in the past, will not just disappear overnight, and so we will see cooling, and warming spikes, caused by other factors, but the warming trend, nonetheless goes on unabated. It is good that real scientists keep questioning, but it is foolhardy for individuals to think that they alone have discovered the 'Truth', when it is contrary to the opinions of thousands of their peers. That is just 'contrariness', and I know that you can relate to that grendel. http://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warming-stopped-in-1998.htm fawcett_11yr_avg.gif (15 KB | 51

Yep just like Columbus... foolhardy... scientists said he was going drop off the edge of the world.
there is no concensus and the IPCC modelling is flawed and scientists have been saying so since the first models and still are after the revised modelling... there isn't even concensus on the cause of the warming period, that we seem to be out of now. |

Seem to be out of???
Well seeing that I just went through the hottest hot spell I have ever experienced, and topped off with the hottest day ever in Melbourne, and the worst bushfires in the country's history, which are all just weather events, but it hardly inspires confidence that this lone scientist has got it right in his belief that we are now cooling. The last arctic winter, was four degrees fahrenheit warmer than average, and just last week we saw the ice bridge linking to the wilkins shelf, collapse, for the first time in recorded history. So while mild fluctuations linked to traditional el nino and la nina cycles, and the eleven year solar cycles, the vast consensus of respected scientists still consider global warming is continuing, despite the lonely voices of the few who determinedly attempt to try and confuse people with isolated weather reports. It is not good enough to pretend that skeptics are just keeping an open mind, when they bloody mindedly ignore the studies of thousands of respected scientists, and latch onto individual voices that offer alternate theories, as being equally valid and important as the accumulated efforts of thousands of bona fide experts in the field. Certainly when someone raises points, like easterbrook has, they should be examined, but they certainly are not noteworthy enough to invalidate everybody elses' work, which is how skeptics try and present it, which is both churlish, and childish. |

Now if you actually looked at your argument with unbiased eyes you'd see how biased and incorrect it is Mozz.
Suddenly daily variation is ok to use, suddenly bushfires many started by firebugs are part of the climate? Tsk, tsk, tsk... |

Title: Re: Cooling not warming... Post by mozzaok on Apr 14th, 2009 at 9:46am
Actually Grendel, I supplied the graph, which shows that the cooling trend spoken of, is not supported by that data.
I then qualified that my statement, was only about the weather, I did not say it was a scientific analysis, just the fact that having just experienced the hottest hot spell ever recorded in melbourne, the hottest day ever recorded in melbourne, and the worst bushfires ever recorded in melbourne, I was not swamped by anecdotal evidence that we are, as contended by a very lonely voice, in a cooling period. The fact remains, that it is pretty much accepted that only crackpots seriously challenge the facts about global warming, and nearly all scientists agree, all governments agree, and nearly all people agree. But, it would be a dull old world without the lunatic fringe to supply us with new, and contradictory theories, because of their implacability. |

Censorship? Funnily enough this article has already disappeared. Sunday April 12, 2009 Beware the climate of conformity What I am about to write questions much of what I have written in this space, in numerous columns, over the past five years. Perhaps what I have written can withstand this questioning. Perhaps not. The greater question is, am I - and you - capable of questioning our own orthodoxies and intellectual habits, asks Paul Sheehan. I suggest you buy and read "Heaven and Earth" Mozz. |

Global warming and today was 5 degrees below average in Sydney.
I know, daily or seasonal fluctuations are common, but it could also be cooling rather than warming. I would rather concentrate on pollution except CO2 rather than CO2 only. |

Look - the most hotly contested data is the actual climate sensitivity, which is defined in terms of temperature rise for a doubling of CO2-e * concentration.
1.There is a clear relationship between CO2 concentration and warming, (I'd like to see you dispute that) and it's extremely easy to calculate using the forcing equation, which is a derivative of some pretty basic physics. Put different levels of CO2 in a tube and you can easily demonstrate how much it absorbs Infrared. 2. The actual forcing due to CO2 is about 1 degree C for a doubling of atmospheric CO2. 3. The climate sensitivity is generally taken to be about 3 degrees C (plus or minus 1.5) including the 1 degrees C from the CO2 component. The additional 2 degrees is due to feedbacks, which include things like increases in water vapour concentration, decreases in marine albedo due to melting sea ice and a few others. 4. The tropical rainforests are currently a sink for CO2. When global temperatures rise by a further 2 degrees C, they will start to become net emitters of CO2. By that stage, all the tree planting in the world won't help. 5. The climate sensitivity can be monitored using long term trends, either pre-industrial age or post industrial age. If we use post industrial age data, we need to account for thermal inertia in the oceans. The warming caused by the last 50 years will not be fully realised until 200 years hence. I've tried to keep it non-technical. If you can grasp that basic science together with an appreciation of the Earth's carbon balance, you should be able to understand how it works. High School students seem to understand the science quite easily. *CO2-e = (CO2 equivalents - includes other GHG's corrected for individual Global warming potential (GWP). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming_potential Of course I'm wasting my time here. Why bother? |

If lack of sunspots is going to bring cooling instead of predicted warming, every man made degree extra will be a blessing.
If overdue ice age is coming, I doubt our 1 or even 5 degrees will amount to anything, might just slightly delay. |

Happy - a temperature difference of -6 degrees is all the difference between now and the peak of the last ice age. The next Ice age could be several thousand years away. We're talking about 91 years until the end of the century. A 2 degree C increase will change the tropical forests from net sinks to net emitters of CO2. A 2 degree C increase will kill the Great Barrier Reef and severely impact on staple cereal crops like rice, resulting in approximately a 30% loss in crop yield. We haven't see the impact of major world famines yet. We haven't seen the impact of the loss of seasonal melt water from the Himalayas either. Do your homework. Sunspots increase solar irradiance. We're not joking. This is for real. |

Do you understand that the Earth actually orbits the Sun, or is that too scientific for you? Would you prefer to just keep an open mind on it because you don't understand the maths of gravitational theory? This is an all too frequently quoted cop-out - I don't understand the science so I'll keep an open mind. Changes in global climate were primarily driven by changes in irradiance from the sun prior to the industrial age. The main causes were changes in the Earth's orbital parameters and changes in solar activity. We understand these parameters pretty well nowadays, to the extent that we can measure solar irradiance directly and extrapolate it back through the ages. Nobody can use the word 'proof' in a scientific pretext, especially non-scientists. To say that there is no proof is a bit like saying that there is no proof that we receive infrared radiation from the sun. I have no proof that you exist. For all I know, you could be a computer virus, written by somebody who has way too much time on their hands. In the same way that we have overwhelming evidence that we do get infrared radiation from the sun, we have overwhelming evidence that continuing to burn fossil fuels will result in a plethora of unwanted effects, including disastrous changes in ocean pH and global warming. Here's a review of "Heaven and Earth"
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,,25433059-5003900,00.html Perhaps we will find a stitch-by-stitch demolition of climate science in his book, as promised? No such luck. The arguments that Plimer advances in the 503 pages and 2311 footnotes in Heaven and Earth are nonsense. The book is largely a collection of contrarian ideas and conspiracy theories that are rife in the blogosphere. The writing is rambling and repetitive; the arguments flawed and illogical. I'm glad that somebody else had enough free time to actually buy and read the book. ;D It is hard to understate the depth of scientific ignorance that the inclusion of this information demonstrates. It is comparable to a biologist claiming that plants obtain energy from magnetism rather than photosynthesis. Plimer has done an enormous disservice to science, and the dedicated scientists who are trying to understand climate and the influence of humans, by publishing this book. It is not "merely" atmospheric scientists that would have to be wrong for Plimer to be right. It would require a rewriting of biology, geology, physics, oceanography, astronomy and statistics. Plimer's book deserves to languish on the shelves along with similar pseudo-science such as the writings of Immanuel Velikovsky and Erich von Daniken. Michael Ashley is professor of astrophysics at the University of NSW. Another review: http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2009/04/the_science_is_missing_from_ia.php The science is missing from Ian Plimer's "Heaven and Earth" Another review: http://novakeo.com/?p=3931 I found others - too numerous to post. Bob Carter Paleoclimate Scientist.... huh????????????????? “Global Warming” Stopped in 1998 Paleoclimate scientist Bob Carter has noted that there is indeed a problem with global warming – it stopped in 1998. “According to official temperature records of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the UK, the global average temperature did not increase between 1998-2005. “…this eight-year period of temperature stasis did coincide with society's continued power station and SUV-inspired pumping of yet more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” noted paleoclimate researcher and geologist Bob Carter of James Cook University in Australia in an April 2006 article titled “There is a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2006/04/09/do0907.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/04/09/ixworld.html |

For those interested in more than the miniscule non-core point Muso seems obsessed with.
http://www.quadrant.org.au/magazine/issue/2008/451/the-futile-quest-for-climate-control The idea that human beings have changed and are changing the basic climate system of the Earth through their industrial activities and burning of fossil fuels—the essence of the Greens’ theory of global warming—has about as much basis in science as Marxism and Freudianism. Global warming, like Marxism, is a political theory of actions, demanding compliance with its rules. Marxism, Freudianism, global warming. These are proof—of which history offers so many examples—that people can be suckers on a grand scale. To their fanatical followers they are a substitute for religion. Global warming, in particular, is a creed, a faith, a dogma that has little to do with science. If people are in need of religion, why don’t they just turn to the genuine article? —Paul Johnson |

Happy - sorry about the tone of my post, especially if you happen to be a teenager LOL. That snide remark was directed at somebody else, who probably enjoyed it.
Virtually all the energy that warms the Earth comes from the sun - that's a given. However the sun has been fairly constant in the last 50 years or so, yet we've noted some temperature increases. The atmosphere has the effect of trapping the heat, and the extent to which that happens depends on the concentration of Greenhouse gases. I have degrees in Chemistry and Environmental Science, the later one being Environmental Science, but I'm not very good at explaining things that are second nature to me as a result of my training, and I get frustrated sometimes when I try. |

I would also concentrate on poisonous side of some concoctions that have breakdown so slow to non-existent that we should take note and start to worry. Despite that it is highly likely that we have bout of global warming, we should also spend time to think up some ways to survive global cooling. We've dropped the ball on some issues. Here are a couple of examples: Swine Flu is one timely reminder of the sad state of preparation of the world for a global epidemic. It could get much worse if it mutates. We should be developing plant species to adapt to gradually increasing temperatures, but we're not. Virtually all the work being carried out is on increasing yields of existing crops, including increasing pest and disease resistance |

We have discussed this point on many occasions Grendel, and it always come back to the same basic answer. It is not about "shooting the messenger", it is about identifying 'spoilers', or in other words, those whose aim it is to promote confusion, and disseminate misinformation to promote confusion. Real skeptics, who offer scientific theories for consideration, and put their theories and data up for peer review, do not fall into that category, because they are offering up their views in an appropriate, and professional manner, and they are seeking to add to the knowledge already compiled on this subject. Those who offer no data or theories to be peer reviewed, but merely promote wild, and usually contradictory 'stories' deserve to be identified as mere spoilers, whose credentials deserve to be brought into question. It is a pretty simple, yet important distinction to make. |

William Kininmonth is an Australian meteorologist noted for his views as an opponent of global warming theory and frequently writes on the topic of climate change. He believes that the warming trend of the recent century is not unusual, and he is critical of the simple model of climate systems represented by the IPCC. While Kininmonth believes that anthropogenic sources may make a small contribution to global warming, he believes the natural variability far exceeds that contribution, and this poses serious hazards for human kind.
Kininmonth headed Australia's National Climate Centre from 1986 to 1998[citation needed], with responsibilities for monitoring Australia's changing climate and advising the Australian government on the extent and severity of climate extremes. He was Australia's delegate to the WMO Commission for Climatology, was a member of Australia's delegations to the Second World Climate Conference (1990) and the subsequent intergovernmental negotiations for the Framework Convention on Climate Change (1991-1992). Well keep it coming your omissions and hypocrisy knows no bounds it seems. |

Now where were we?
Oh yes... more dissent from people involved with the IPCC http://www.nzcpr.com/guest147.htm So, I am a climate realist because the available evidence indicates that climate change is predominantly, if not entirely, natural. It occurs mostly in response to variations in solar heating of the oceans, and the consequences this has for the rest of the Earth’s climate system. There is no evidence to support the hypothesis runaway catastrophic climate change due to human activities. and... http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.Blogs&ContentRecord_id=10fe77b0-802a-23ad-4df1-fc38ed4f85e3 The over 700 dissenting scientists are now more than 13 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. |

Can we have some actual scientific argument instead of the 'Appeal to Authority' gambit, because it gets boring refuting it all the time.
The trap is that the only counter to 'Appeal to Authority' is to demonstrate that the authority is not an authority. Even if that's true, which it usually is, it leads to claims of hypocrisy. Just so that everybody is aware - a claim about climatology requires qualifications in climatology. A claim about a person's qualifications can be verified by just about anybody - no specialist knowledge required. A secretary can do it. |

Welcome to scientific research, Soren. We can't say too much for certain about a glaciation that happened 433 Million years ago, just as we can't say for certain what 'absolutely definitely' caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.
This explanation makes a great deal of sense though. Ever wonder why there was so much more ice cover in the Antarctic nowadays? Land masses have that effect. So I see your desperate clutch at straws and I'll raise you my intelligent guess based on the best data we have available. Incidentally your highlighting indicates that you don't understand the flow of the abstract. It starts off with the questions and doubts, then shows how the study addresses them. |

OK Karl Popper :P Yes - the claim that the increased increased tropospheric warming is largely due to the increased CO2 concentration is testable. The reasonable test is that the stratosphere should show a corresponding cooling for that period. If the observed tropospheric warming is due to increased solar output, then that should show an increase in stratospheric temperatures and an increase in solar irradiance. That's a reasonable test to apply. We already know how much cooling is caused by CFC's and other ozone depletants. |

We're currently at Solar minimum, and the latest work shows that the next peak will be around 2013. http://www.physorg.com/news163083874.html (PhysOrg.com) -- An international panel of experts led by NOAA and sponsored by NASA has released a new prediction for the next solar cycle. Here you can see the effects of the Solar cycle on Solar irradiance. Look at the bottom 3 graphs.
You can see the regular changes amounting to about 2Wm-2. That's about 0.14% fluctuation, which is hardly substantial. Incidentally, do you see how little the output of the sun has changed since 1978? |

Title: Re: Cooling not warming... Post by soren on Jun 5th, 2009 at 9:48am Here's an inconvenient truth for "An Inconvenient Truth": Remember what they used to call "climate change"? "Global warming." And what did they call it before that? "Global cooling." That was the big worry in the '70s: the forthcoming ice age. Back then, Lowell Ponte had a huge best seller called The Cooling: Has the new ice age already begun? Can we survive? The answer to the first question was: Yes, it had begun. From 1940 to 1970, there was very slight global cooling. That's why the doom-mongers decided the big bucks were in the new-ice-age blockbusters. And yet, amazingly, we've survived. Why? Because in 1970 the planet stopped its very slight global cooling and began to undergo very slight global warming. So in the '80s, the doom-mongers cast off their thermal underwear, climbed into the leopardskin thongs, slathered themselves in sun cream and wired their publishers to change all references to "cooling" to "warming" for the paperback edition. That's why, if you notice, the global-warming crowd begin their scare statistics with "since 1970," an unlikely Year Zero which would not otherwise merit the significance the eco-crowd invest in it. But then in 1998 the planet stopped its very slight global warming and began to resume very slight global cooling. And this time the doom-mongers said, "Look, do we really want to rewrite the bumper stickers every 30 years? Let's just call it 'climate change.' That pretty much covers it." Why did the Earth cool between 1940 and 1970? Beats me. Hitler? Hiroshima? Maybe we need to nuke someone every couple of decades. Mark Steyn |

Wrong again boofster.
"This argument represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between weather and climate. Climate is generally defined as the weather conditions averaged over a long period, usually around 30 years. One can not discern a trend in climate change by looking at small numbers of years, much less a single one. On top of that, this fallacious objection is using global temperatures in a single month, not even an entire year! The particular Jan. 2007 to Jan. 2008 drop used for this argument is indeed large, but it is by no means the only place you could pick to draw a steep line, either up or down. Look at the huge leap up from month 219 to month 231 or the sudden drop from month 152 to month 164 (I am only using intervals of 12 months to avoid seasonal bias). This is very noisy data and those dramatic fluctuations turned out to be just that: noise. Discerning a trend from noisy data is one of the most basic processes in scientific research, so even though this argument has a naive appeal to the majority of us with no statistical training, you can be sure that any scientifically trained individual trying to make a case for cooling out of this graph is not being intellectually honest. Please consider any source of this argument as very unreliable, either by being very uninformed about basic scientific processes, or very dishonest, hoping to take advantage of less informed people." www.grist.org/article/temperatures-plummeted So is boof unreliable, uninformed about BASIC SCIENTIFIC PROCESS,or just VERY DISHONEST? |

That Seattle Times article has one memorable paragraph in it:
The skeptics' view, and it's so true. When you step into the realm of the skeptics, you find yourself on a parallel Earth. It is a planet where global warming isn't happening — or, if it is happening, isn't happening because of human beings. Or, if it is happening because of human beings, isn't going to be a big problem. And, even if it is a big problem, we can't realistically do anything about it other than adapt. The only thing they got wrong is that you need not one, but several parallel earths to accomodate the different views. |

Freeman Dyson Takes On the Climate Establishment (naughty, naughty man. Ed.)
Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson has been roundly criticized for insisting global warming is not an urgent problem, with many climate scientists dismissing him as woefully ill-informed. In an interview with Yale Environment 360, Dyson explains his iconoclastic views and why he believes they have stirred such controversy. by michael d. lemonick On March 3, The New York Times Magazine created a major flap in the climate-change community by running a cover story on the theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson that focused largely on his views of human-induced global warming. Basically, he doesn’t buy it. .... Many climate scientists were especially distressed that the Times gave his views such prominence. Even worse, when the profile’s author, Nicholas Dawidoff, was asked on NPR’s “On The Media” whether it mattered if Dyson was right or wrong in his views, Dawidoff answered, “Oh, absolutely not. I don’t care what he thinks. I have no investment in what he thinks. I’m just interested in how he thinks and the depth and the singularity of his point of view.” This is, to put it bluntly, bizarre. Sigh ::) In statistics, a moving average, also called rolling average, rolling mean or running average, is a type of finite impulse response filter used to analyze a set of data points by creating a series of averages of different subsets of the full data set. A moving average is not a single number, but it is a set of numbers, each of which is the average of the corresponding subset of a larger set of data points. A moving average may also use unequal weights for each data value in the subset to emphasize particular values in the subset. A moving average is commonly used with time series data to smooth out short-term fluctuations and highlight longer-term trends or cycles. The threshold between short-term and long-term depends on the application, and the parameters of the moving average will be set accordingly. |

The thicker it gets the heavier it gets the more likely to break off... but hey that'll be blamed on global warming too.

That's not actually a problem. That's actually good. If East Antarctica were actually melting at this stage, we'd have extremely major problems. Fortunately, our problems are just major. Let's get this right. Deniers often use the 'A' word - Alarmist. Listen up - It's the message that's alarming, NOT THE MESSENGER! THEOREM: Climate alarmism does not exist. PROOF: You can't actually overdo the "alarmism", because very plausible scenarios are THE MOST ALARMING IMAGINABLE. (And this is one reason why the GW debate is so messy and astroturfing sells so well.) ;D |

That's the problem with using simplified and incomplete 'models'. Does the so called 'model' take into account changes in albedo due to decreased sea ice? No? Well it's the main effect in play in the Arctic, and to some extent in the Antarctic Peninsula. (In plain language, seawater looks much darker from Space and absorbs more heat than ice, which tends to reflect radiation.) As far as East Antarctica goes, well come back in 3000 years and it might be an issue by then. |

Interesting. Green policies (getting rid of CFCs) are major contributors to warming. What next? Bring back leaded petrol? The greens said we'd die from the hole in our socks - I mean the ozone layer. So we rushed in, preventative-like, changed our ways - and waddaya know? we are going to die from warming (or cooling) !!! CFC, or chlorofluorocarbon, gases were widely deployed in air conditioning and refrigeration units before they were found to destroy the ozone layer and banned under the 1987 Montreal Protocol. They were replaced by HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) gases that have far less effect on ozone but have since been revealed as extremely powerful greenhouse gases. A tonne of HFC-23 used in refrigeration has the same global warming potential as 14,800tonnes of CO2. Got that? 1 tonne of HFC23 'green' gas = 14,800 tonnes of CO2. Fourteen thousand and eight hundred TONNES of CO2. That's what a wag would call a smacking inconvenient truth. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,,25669015-5013404,00.html |

Hmmm Let's compare apples with apples though. All this is true, but the mass of HFC23 that is actually released into the atmosphere is miniscule compared to that of CO2. Like we put out roughly 27,000Tg (teragrams) of CO2 every year. By comparison, we emit something like 0.005Tg of HFC23. Those figures are 'near enough' estimates. I could probably look them up. So even given the higher GWP(Global Warming potential), it's insignificant in the scheme of things. The figure usually quoted is the 100 year time horizon, and for HFC-23, that is actually 11700 (CO2=1). You have to look at the total impact. Let's not confuse ozone depletion with the greenhouse effect. The world actually did something about the Ozone depletion with the Montreal protocol. That was one crisis that we averted. By the way, the CFC's that were gradually replaced from 1987 onwards generally had high GWP's too, so the implication that the HFC's were worse, is misleading. The highest GWP that I know of is sulphur hexafluoride, which is used as an insulator in some High Voltage transformers. The GWP for SF6 is 23900 (CO2=1), but again the total global emission is miniscule - even less than for HFC23. |

We averted that crisis did we?
How big is the hole now. last time I looked it was still there and as big as ever. |

Almost as big - but if we had done nothing it would have been much bigger. Yes, we averted a crisis. The Ozone hole has actually decreased slightly in the last two seasons, but some of that is due to reduced solar activity. However the total Stratospheric chlorine has reduced. The best you could say is that it is stabilising. The duration is shorter in recent years than for historical maxima. On current predictions, it will start to close around 2050. |

Title: Re: Cooling not warming... Post by Grendel on Jun 24th, 2009 at 11:47am
Sure..
We know its seasonal too don't we and that its almost that time now. A natural variation you forgot to mention. 2050? Well I probably won't be around then. |

Yeah, it's seasonal in that the largest effect happens around September every year, and it's also affected by variations in the solar cycle. I thought I already mentioned the solar cycle. The main indicator is the slow decrease in stratospheric chlorine. I might still be around in 2050. You never know. All that green tea must do something for me ;D |

Well, unfortunately we will probably not have to wait long for the loons to drop this line of cock and bull.
The latest studies show the exact opposite of what these denialist crackpots have been contending, contrary to ALL, respected scientific opinion. A few years ago we expected to see slight cooling until 2011/12, but new studies expect the heat to be back on in force as early as next year, with new record highs exceeding 1998 predicted with it. We may hope for two things from this, that governments will start to act more rapidly, and denialists will finally shut the heck up. (At least until the next phase peaks, and then they will claim we are cooling again, the cretins) Quote:

LOL
The Guardian the biggest PC LW propaganda sheet in the world. You gotta know your sources Mozz. Someone forgot to tell him the El Nino effect doesn't count. LOL. Pity we'll have to wait to see if those alarmist predictions/guesses/wishful-thinking turns out to be right eh. Now where were we oh yes you ridiculing and calling people with dissenting opinions loons. How come the alarmists are now saying that warming has been good or those record cold temperatures we've been having would have been far worse? LOL. I do wish they'd make up their minds. |

It is a report, on a soon to be published study Grendel, it is not an op-ed piece from some loony blogger.
It is the findings of a prominent scientific study. The research, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, was carried out by Judith Lean, of the US Naval Research Laboratory, and David Rind, of Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. I know facts don't appeal to you, they are much harder to have an honest debate over. |

It's not FACTS Mozz... its a guess.
Oh BTW in case you missed it whilst having a caniption... I was talking about the future predictions... which cant be any way you look at it... FACTS. |
