I always like taking political tests. Even though they all call me libertarian or anarchist. (Even though I hate libertarians and roll my eyes at anarchists..) Ironicaly in one test where it said how I would run the country came up "centrist democracy"..

Before the last election, I had always voted Liberal, but on the last election, I found that they had migrated too far to the right for me, especially on the invasion of Iraq. I've always maintained the need for strong economic growth and a free market economy - but not at any cost. My other main point of contention is the Liberal Environmental policy, which is minimalist. I regard myself as a Green, but the Australian Greens appeal more to the headless chook variety of Green rather than the pragmatic Green.

The ALP has always performed better on Environmental issues, but they have mostly been too far to the Left in the past. Rudd has come back slightly Right of Centre if anything.

Muso, I am with you on pragmatist green. Conservation and healthy environments do not mean untouchable.

Make that three for pragmatic environmentalism.

Unfortunately for the environmental movement, it has previously been seen as represented by hippies chaining themselves to trees, which did nothing to spread acceptance amongst the more conservative majority of australians.

We have seen a shift over the last decade, with suited up, media savvy, environmentalists, getting their message across to the wider community, and with that, a more realistic, pragmatic approach has developed.

Ultimately we should see this new Green movement being able to deliver better environmental outcomes because of the greater acceptance of environmental policies across all walks of life.

I would like to see the stats, but I would predict that most families would rank caring for the environment, very highly on their priorities, of what they want the government to manage.

As usual ON comes out on top for me.  Oh dear and look...  I'm not of the "Christian Right" or any Right for that matter.  Seems to me I am becoming less left and more Centrist these days though...  I guess the progs here and on other sites can thank themselves for that.

I'm surprised ON still comes up on these quizzes.  Looks like the Greens are the big winners.  

And Muso - the Australian Greens have never been of the headless chook variety - they have been misrepresented for years.  Bob Brown has done an outstanding job keeping the Party together and broadly increasing the voter base.

The young members coming through the ranks are dedicated, professional and caring and will be great representatives for the future of the party.  They put the interests of the country before their own - unlike the major parties.

They're all leftwing. There you go.

Not that I'm not curious as to the parties. (Seeing as I got a below average score on all lol!) But I don't see why noone adopts a four party "big tent" system.

You got your right socialy/right fiscaly party.
You got your right socialy/left fiscaly party.
And you got your left socialy/right fiscaly party.

Then the moderate vote would actually be the deciding vote. As opposed to just claiming lip-service that they matter.

Another test I found, I honestly did not see that one coming.. I mean, I guess it makes sense. Seeing as I don't ussualy justify my positions with some long winded rant about "rights" or "logic" or "justice" or "God".

It's my will. That's a good enough reason.

There are a number of good reasons.

One is corruption. No matter what the ideology, corruption sets in eventually. Having a competitor with similar dieology keeps them more honest.

Also, in any election there are multiple issues. No party is going to match your position on all of them. The more choice, the better.

Also, in the US for example, both major parties opposed ratification of Kyoto for many years after the majority of the population supported it. They must have had sponsors/donors who wanted that outcome. Lack of competition allowed them to get away with it. There is always a very real risk that obth major parties will be bought by the same interest group. In that situation the more minor parties the better.

I actually voted Green at the last election. Some of the policies are totally anathema to me (for example I am totally against drugs), but I voted for them because their approach to Climate Change seemed reasonable.

Well if you are against drugs then you did the right thing by default, because their stance on drugs is by far the best of any party.

The prohibition and drug wars are an anachronism, sometimes you have to give a little to gain a lot.

Drugs are a murky area.  The Greens advocate harm minimisation - not the promotion of legal use, as is so often spruiked through the major parties' propaganda machines.

Their policies have changed over the years on this issue and recently they have been taking a harder stance - although where has prohibition got us?  Drug use is worse than it's ever been.
