Cooper honoured for sustainable brew

Tim Cooper loved beer after growing up amid the barrels and malty scents of the traditional family brewery in Adelaide.

But he didn't immediately enter the Coopers Brewery business, becoming a doctor for almost a decade before being lured into the company his ancestor Thomas Cooper founded in 1861.

The fifth-generation brewer oversaw the making of ales, stouts and lagers before his passion for the process led him to direct the construction of a new operation at Regency Park when the old Leabrook place grew too small.

This step led to his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the brewing industry - particularly through his implementation of environmentally sustainable production and manufacturing practices.

"Apart from drinking the beer, my greatest joy is being involved in building the brewery," Dr Cooper said.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that as a brewer you get the chance to consider what is the best possible way of doing things."

This included the design, layout, choice of equipment and packaging as well as minimising the brewery's environmental footprint and construction of a co-generational plant.

Dr Cooper said the most rewarding part of the job was the various people he had met along the way.

"That makes it more fun, and if you can enjoy a beer a long the way then it is a very meaningful and enjoyable relationship."
